What's More Important In a Bar?

About what?

Lame poll is now up. I'd think the most important aspect of a bar is the alcohol. Why else would you be at a bar? It helps if the bar isn't filled with either retarded teenagers or retarded bogans, the former being why I'm now searching for a new bar

Well, high tensile strength, Youngs modulus etc. Depends what you're gonna use it for. Weight, too is also important.

Depends on the bar...although I've never been in one so I don't know.

No, but some pool balls got thrown. At some other balls. Cheap shot. Damn cheap shot. *he said, massaging his balls, recalling the evening*

Pub > Bar.
It should be dark, quiet, and have decent bitter/ale on the hand pumps.
Edit: And ideally no music. If there must be music it should be quiet.

There are bars, and then there are bars that cater to people who are trying to hook up.

The latter is preferable.

Depends on what you're looking for at the time.

Rule of thumb is, that a place is only as good as the company you keep. The crappiest bars or pubs can still be a blast with the right drinking buddies.

If you're out for the beer and a chance to shoot the shit, then you're best going to a pub with better beer than Generic brand A or Generic brand B. Also, such places are more conducive to drunken debate on topics not unlike you will see on NS General.

Of course, once in a while, you just gotta go where the girls are. In which case, the Pubs aren't usually your best option, and you'll put up with Generic brand A or B for the chance to press into a crowd with as many partying people as possible.

most important thing in a bar is the atmosphere for me. drinks are the same pretty much everywhere, at similar prices, so its the music, feel and decor of the place that gets me coming back :)

there's a Lord Of The Rings theme pub here in southampton that is lovely and proper 'old-pub' style (all oak and old wood, not chrome and wanky lights) and they play great live music too. go back there happily, but not for the booze but for the place itself (and i'd go on my own too if i could be bothered - its not really about the pals for me there, though good company is important of course)

Booze. Full stop.

If it doesn't have alcohol, then there's no point.

I'd say women it can get a little dry when its just guys (though a T.V in the corner is good because I can pretend to understand what’s happening and thus look really sporty :D )

though booze and a crazy golf course are always welcome no matter what the situation

What, in your opinion, makes a bar more suitable for hookin' up?

I am not Keep Kimchi, so therefore, you may not be looking for my answer, However, I will dare to suggest that the bars that are more suitable to 'hook up', are the ones where members of both sexes congregate to hook up. Different bars try different things, but the rule of thumb seems to be this;

- Whatever brings the girls tlo the bar, will bring the boys to the bar.

The big question is, why do I not own my own bar yet?

Atmosphere. Everything else is a part of that. (I voted charisma, because that was the closest thing.

The bar should reflect it's purpose.

If I go to have fun w/ my pals, it should be reasonably well lit - not to dark to see the cards for example, but dim enough to relax, have "good" music, not playing too loud for conversation, and be comfortably furnished. The staff should be friendly. And there should be 2-3 cheapo beers and 1-2 primo beers on tap, 3-5 bottled beers, a short, basic selection of liquors, maybe a few cocktails, and some good snacky foods.

If I'm out to just get drunk, simple and cheap booze, unintrusive staff that knows how to shut up and keep it pouring, low lighting, and no tables - just a bar and maybe stools. Music (jazz, blues, and or country, played low) and TV (sports only) optional. Food should consist of peanuts and the like.

If I'm out for fine booze, a good selection of good single malt Scotch, wine, primo beers, excelent light food, and so on.

If I'm out dear hunting, on a date, or whatever, the atmosphere needs to be appropriate.

Booze? All bars have booze, appropriate to the atmosphere.*
Pals, "chicks", strippers, and the TV all fall under entertainment, which is a part of the atmosphere.

Furnishings and food, if any, are also part of the atmosphere.

Ditto good staff.

And really, atmosphere depends on the management - good managers know the customers. And unfortunately, the owner of what was long my favorite place hired a crappy manager a few years ago, and now, after 12 years of weveral times a week patronage, I might go once a month....

I've got a few other places I go.

*With the exception made famous by Slim Dusty - that ought to keep the antipodians happy.

Honestly, I'll go to any bar as long as I've got a bunch of my buddies with me, and have fun. Or raise hell, if the bar sucks. Either way, fun!

Funny thing you should mention that. A pal of mine recently visited family in Scotland. His uncle, on retiring, did basically that - opened a small pub in the basement.

I'd say we could go in together, but co-ownership of a bar never works out....

That's one of the few things the bar above has done right recently. They had a big screen for the Japan-Australia world cup match (lots of Aussies here and of course Japanese). They really packed them in - for one night. Then no more. 4 years ago, they screened almost every game to packed crowds.

Oddly enough for me it is the decor and furniture. I like a place which is comfortable to sit and chat with nice surroundings, you know, not to bright not to dim and the rest. Also in winter a good fireplace is a must. I don't like loud music either.

Naturally a reasonable selection of drinks and snacks is a given.

Yes! I'm so tired of pubs who turn the music up so loud you can't talk with your friends. They seem to think they're bars or night clubs, despite the fact they serve food and have no space for dancing.

Bars in my personal opinion should have good old fashioned beer and hard alcohol, not cheap cocktail drinks you find in a metro bar. You know those new ones, If I wanted that, I would drink one of starbuck's coffees.

Of course it depends on the bar, but most (not all) bars should be able to do the odd basic cocktail, especially the real ones.

Real mixed drinks are simple. They have no more than 2 liquors and 2 mixers. The type of liquor should be limited and liqueurs looked upon with suspicion. Mixers include a limited number of juices, tonic, soda, seltzer, a limited number of pop/soda/cokes (Coke, 7-Up, and ginger ale), and maybe milk - maybe. Bitters, grenadine, and a few other additives are OK.

For a good read on the subject of acceptable cocktails: http://moderndrunkardmagazine.com/issues/03_06/0306_manly_drinking.html
(I love an article that starts off "If you’re a man aged anywhere from 21 to 35, I’ve got some sobering news for you. Your Grandmother is a better drinker than you are." My Nana definately knew how to drink right - one of the nmany valuable lessons I learned from her.)

Your mates being there, probably. I mean, with a good group of friends you can cover at least 7 of those topics, including stripping. As long as it's a bar, it will serve drink. I don't need good drinks for a good night.

Getting the Myrth in might be difficult though.

Yes, it worked. And the popularity depends - it was more or less just an excuse for his drinking buddies to have their own private-ish pub.

Innitially I said 'Pals' but then I started to wonder if this was from the view of a patron or an owner. I changed to 'chicks' as an owner because a bar without them is either gay or a dive.
