Question for non-Americans.

What do you think of Americans? Seriously, ive always wanted to know what other people thought of America but i always get some weird comment about Bush. So im talking about the american people.

I hate Americans that are obsessed with Ireland, the ones that are apparently under some delusion that because their great-great grandparents or something came from here, they are somehow Irish themselves. Many of the Americans I've met seem to have this fetish; however, beyond that, the people of the USA are like the people of anywhere else for the most part. Some are morons, some are fine - it doesn't usually have much to do with their nationality, just personality.

In short, everyone's different, so it's impossible to judge individuals purely based on their country of origin.

I think that they think too much about what others think of them. I've heard this question many times on internet and caught it on American tvs while zapping and I dont zap all channels often.
Noone here cares about what Americans think of us, we only care about what Swedes think of us but shhh...it's a secret....

The Americans are fine, generally.

The American South has more crazy religious nuts per capita then average in the western world, but I can understand that they aren't representative of Americans as a whole.

Overall, I'd say that I see the Americans in a favourable light, in a manner similar to how I see the Germans, French, and Spanish - albeit with a greater concentration of crazies to the south then normally expected.

I'm from Canada, if that matters.

I generally like Americans, and I know of all sorts. I cant really compare them to other countries because I've only been to Canada, outside the US.

As bad a rap as the place gets, the Southern US is actually a great and diverse place. Most of the negative feeling comes from generational distaste and a sensationalist news. The Southern part of the US is generally more laid back, and much more social. Curiously enough (Given red/blue state divisions) southerners have much less taste for huge corporate machines.

As a whole they're a decent people. Unfortunatly there is a high ratio of moderatly educated overzealous religious types that ruins Americas image to the rest of the civilized world.Americans are viewed by most people as smug, self-righteous and arrogant. Look at any countries stereotypical representation of an American, you get the fat cowboy who thinks he's the greatest thing in the world. Probably shooting off pistols while praising jesus. Sad as it is.

Unfortunatly every country seems to be qualified by its lowest common denominator. Find the weakest link your country has to offer, and thats how the world will characterise you. It's sad but true when you look at the world stage.

Yeah, you're doing a fucking great job of keeping your rights at the moment. Patriot Act ring any bells?

But on the whole you guys are all right. Yes, America seems higher than practically every other country in terms of misplaced nationalism, religious fundamentalists per capita, and ad hominem attacks replacing genuine debate. And I'm not even going to go near the obesity epidemic (or hopefully the obese people). But a friendly American is generally very friendly indeed, and you seem to be doing a good job of keeping my DVD and CD racks full. So even though I spend a lot of my time taking cheap shots at you, I don't mean it really. Or at least, I don't mean it to apply to all of you.

I just stopped at the one in Gaylord on my way up to Mackinac Island two weeks ago. Tasty stuff. You really should try Bell's out of Kalamazoo, everything they make is fantastic. You can also get Bell's at most party stores anywhere in the state. I suggest the Oberon Ale and the Special Double Cream Stout.

Unfortunately I'll be overseas this winter and won't be able to go to the Michigan Winter Beer Festival in Lansing :( Most of the breweries in the state bring their wares, and many of them bring experimental things you can't get any other time.

I don't go across the border as often as I once did, but that Lansing beer festival sounds tempting... there's one in Toronto, but it gets more and more disappointing every year, with the big companies crowding out the microbreweries. Kind of defeats the purpose of the thing...

And such is the problem with stereotypes. There really are a lot of very good American beers now. I think it actually started in the 80s when Bass and Guiness and other English beers became popular here. By the 90s a lot of really good micrbreweries started popping up in Cali, Oregon, Michigan and other places. Now it's almost unfair to still call many of them microbreweries anymore.

When I've been to America, the people have been wonderful. never before have I met (generally speaking) such a polite and welcoming bunch of people. It ios so nice for people to say "have a nice day", whether they mean it or not.

Here, in Britain, you gat two distinct categories. Those who appreciate the subtle and unique differences in our cultures, and those who insist everything is bigger and better in "the states". The second category I can't abide. Thankfully they are in the minority.

BTW - current US government? Bunch of arseholes

In general, the Americans are okay people- heck, I've got an ex-girlfriend who's an American (before anyone says anything, I'm still on good terms with her, and I'm not bitter!)

I will say, though, that the Americans tend to be rather inward-looking. I can see how that kind of attitude could come about, but it doesn't change the fact that America is not the source of all the world's answers.

"Americans claim to be the king of beers and boast to brew some of the best beer in the world. Obviously, these people don't own a passport. But their mocrobrewery has been improving by leaps and bounds these last few years and some beers actualy taste pretty good now."

As for what I think of Americans:

As a rule of thumb, most Americans (espicially here in the south) care way too darn much about religion, are overly patriotic, arrogant, and self-absorbed with how "great" their country is. In addition, they dare not appreciate other countries culture as much as they should. Yet this is a result of the history, with basically building up their country on their own.
