You'll need the international dialing code - 0044 for the UK.

Swap the 0 at the start of the number for either +44 or 0044.
EDIT: Damn I got slow.

so is it
011+44( rest of the nuber)
or
0044+( rest of te number)
??
the number i have just
44(rest of the number)
International calling from the US out requires a 011, just like you should put the 1 before an area code when calling within the US.

If your number is 0117 867 768, you'd dial 0044117 867 768.
Just drop the initial 0 and replace it with 0044.

It's 011 to access the international dialing codes from the US.
00 if you're in Europe.
Edit: Beaten to it

I called London from the U.S. two weeks ago.
I used 011+44+number and it seemed to work just fine.
I assume it would be the same for a fax.

If the number was, say, originally 01234 567890 then it would become either 00441234 567890 or +441234 567890. I think. Back me up, someone?
EDIT: Bugger, didn't know about the US business. Damned procrastinators, the lot of you. :p

Really?
Wow, the USA really is insular if you need a special code to be allowed to talk to the outside world.

Its 00 if youre calling from within Europe. How is a phone going to know that the 44 (UK country code) isnt part of a domestic area code?

You need a code to call another country any where you are. In Europe that code just happens to look like an extension of the code for national calls.

I was only teasing. It was too easy to resist. ;)

Don't dial the 0 ;)
I remember I had the same problem to call the UK from Mexico. I think you don't dial the 0 but you dial the 1. Or something like that.
Edit: So it's 011 + 44 + 1 + number
or something, London screws everything.

No no. You first dial 011, then 44, then the number. If the number begins with a 0 I dont think you dial that 0.

Sounds like they were kind enough to give you the country code over the phone, but did not know or think to tell you how to dial out of the U.S. Can't blame them for that.
You're not dialing "44" twice are you?
