The large sport utility vehicle carrying up to 22 people swerved to avoid a spike strip put out by Border Patrol agents, Sheriff's Maj. Leon Wilmot said.

So could deregulating it.

It doesn't really matter either way. This is sad because people guilty of nothing more than trying to make a decent living died a tragic death. While it is political in nature, it is vicious and heartless to turn it into a political windfall.

People would be less gloating about if these were Americans.

It's one in an unending series of tragic but unremarkable incidents. It can't be ignored because it's part of the issue itself, but one more incident won't change the overall situation, and I don't recall claiming it as proof of anything in particular.

Heh. What I was saying was, that it won't be a political windfall for anyone because no one here will hear about it.. Whether it gets a blurb in Brazil is irrelevant. Brazilians don't dictate U.S. border policy and can't draw a political windfall from it either, unless you have local candidates making an issue out of foreigners' border chaos. :p

Eww... Regulation. The only reason why Coyotes (slang for those who smuggle Mexicans into the US) exist is because immigration is regulated. If it weren't, they could walk across the border no problem. Coyotes are hired to help these people avoid immigration and Border Patrol.

That, and breaking the law.
Oh, kindly shut the fuck up. Seriously, saying "but it's the law" is the most retarded argument I have ever heard. And what pisses me off is that so many people say it! Look, we live in a country that was founded on the principle that government requires the consent of the governed. We don't live in a society of divine providence, no matter how much Bush wants it to be. If there's a law that is suddenly unpopular, the government takes notice. If there's a law that's unconstitutional, it is reversed. Our law isn't written in stone. At best, it's written in pencil. Don't give the argument "it's the law". If this were the 1940's, would you be saying, "The policy of interring Japanese for indefinate terms without probable cause seems like a xenophobic and unconstitutional policy" or would you say "it's the law"?

The post you're quoting was my reply to this:

This is sad because people guilty of nothing more than trying to make a decent living died a tragic death.

All melodrama aside, they did break the law. That was my response on page one. No one deserves to die on account of breaking this particular law, but they broke it just the same.

The problem with the border is that it is not in any way consistent. It's partially regulated at best. Consequently, it lures people in, punishing some and ignoring others. That's no way to do things. If you want to call anyone who's anti-illegal immigration anti-immigrant, then go ahead, but it's not accurate. There are tens of millions of people around the globe who want to come here as citizens, and that right should be distributed fairly in a controlled way, not in uncontrollable bursts and stops depending on foreign economies.

I'm not one of the Marxists you'll see occasionally around here who'll declare that borders should be abolished, and I don't care if the Founding Fathers' guiding principle was love of fruit cocktail.. the majority do not want an unregulated border. There is nothing unconstitutional about regulating the border.

However, the point is that these people died trying to cross the border, which is obviously completely undeserved. It's a freakin' line on a map. It's not like they murdered someone.

You're only eligible for a Darwin award if you are the cause of your own death or sterility via gross negligence or stupidity. These poor souls don't qualify. While piling 22 into an SUV isn't bright, it is not lethal nor sterilizing. Though if the Driver himself died (unlikely) he could qualify.

I do however look foward to reading your winning entry to the Darwin awards there DM.

And please, don't be so ignorant. The US is hardly a "white" nation. Just look at the census figures.

I was referring to pre-1776 immigration, but nevermind.

"In an introduction to a more detailed population profile (see references below), the Census Bureau highlighted the following facts about U.S population dynamics:

* 75.1% of respondents said they were White and no other race;
* 12.3% are of Black or African-American descent;
* Hispanics - who may belong to any race - accounted for 12.5% of the U.S. population, up from 9% in 1990;
* 3.6% of respondents are Asian;
* 2.4% of respondents are multiracial (2 or more races). The 2000 Census was the first time survey options for multiracial Americans were provided."

I don't recall stating the US was 'white nation', I merely tried to get a statement concerning the acceptability of European, i.e. predominantely white, immigration vs. the immigration of other people.

Same here- I'm on the East Coast too. This is national news. And I'm sure the vast majority of Americans that heard about it also ARE NOT gloating the tragic deaths, but more feeling terrible for the victims. And the Border Patrol Agents that DONT want to kill these illegals.

I'm against illegal immigration. I DONT want to see the people that attempt to cross illegally die of dehydration in the dessert-or locked in a tractor trailer in high heat, or in accidents like this.

I want to see deplorable conditions in their home country improve so people arent willing to pay high prices and act desperately to get here. And the ones that do come here, do so legally-documented and responsible.

Okay, so in five hundred years no one will remember that you, I, or anyone else existed. Fair enough. But to use that as an excuse to revel in the black comedy that is human tragedy and misery is probably the most fucked up practice in which I've seen my fellow man engage. The second most? To use the same statement to just not care about the same tragedy and misery. You, I and everyone we know probably won't be remembered in the long run, but the society in which we live will. I honestly can't believe people who think they can ignore human tragedy just because they have no personal connection to it.
