Why does the media think that drunk actors like Mel Gibson or crazy actors like Tom Cruise are important? Why do we pay any attention to them? Why do we vest any importance in their thoughts and actions? Why?

And this is getting off-topic fast.

Anyway, the starmaker machine loves all stars equally, be they ascendant or descendant. Stop consuming the excreta of the machine already (The only reason I had any clue regarding Mel Gibson was from reading the threads here on NSG - and even then...).

You're asking the question from the wrong angle. You should be asking why the public eats that up, why it sells papers and focus' eyeballs. If no one cared, it wouldn't get reported.

It is funny how the shooting in Seattle and Mel's arrest happened at the same time, yet one got much more air play.

Simple. The United States Media thrives on the humiliation and downfall of the rich, famous and influential.

If Dear Leader or Bill Gates as an example were to be caught in some kind of pedophile ring- as a hypothetical example mind you just to illustrate this media obcession- we'd be hearing abou it for the next couple of months.

You've managed to combine two of the media's favorite obsessions together.

because the huddled masses have nothing better in their dreary lives to look forward too...so they live vicariously thru our "stars"

add to that..we love to put people on pedestals and then love to see them knocked off it!

a pathetic way to feel better about ones self i admit.

The media does it because it's cheap and easy--the infrastructure is all there, ready and waiting, and the corporate, profit-driven media loves nothing more than cheap and easy.

And people pay attention because it's played up as important. Not everyone falls for it, as is shown by the large number of people who are tossing television news aside in favor of alternatives.

I saw some documentary about celebrity once that had some "expert" who said something to the effect of, two thousand years ago, if you heard of someone you never met it was because he did something really good. If neo-lithic farmers are telling stories about a guy who lives 5 villages over then he's someone worth knowing, and listening to.

Now we've got a situation where someone who isn't that impressive can be known all over the world, but our brains are still wired to assume that (Knowledge of) + (Distance from) = importance. Hence, Paris Hilton has a music career and will be the first female president in 30 years.
