Yes I completed my first day of high school at Lexington High. (Yes im no longer at Lexignton Middle (http://www.doheth.co.uk/funny/signs/Anal_Exams.jpg)- no seriously thats where I went) Its a fairly large school, about 3000, 4A. I have an easy first semester schedule, first block i have Algebra 1 HN (a retake from 8th grade, when i got a 75) then second block i have Physical Science 1 HN. Third block I have "Strategies for Sucess," basically a study skills and time management lesson. 4th block i have basketball conditioning and weight training. I survived my first day of high school!

Be afraid young one be very afraid. I guess in American terms I'm a senior. Tradition ( aka the unwritten code for Sixthformers/seniors) tells us we must make the first week of school for the new kids hell. We range from stuffing them into lifts, wedgies, soakings etc....But the best day is always the final day of school. Planning is already underway to unleash hell on our school

I didn't have to worry about that, since after all, I was stronger than some of the seniors, and they were all my buddys anyway ;)

Child! My first day of High School was in 1980!

My next first day of high School is in the 14th August when I start teaching without L plates! (For the colonial types, to Drive in Britain with a provisional Licence, you need a white plate with a big red L on it to warn other drivers that you will drive like an idiot, stall the car for the hell of it and do emergency brake maneuvers to scare the living daylights out of drivers behind them.) ;)

They key thing to remember on your first day is not to take any shit. If someone cuts in on the dinner line on you, bumps you, or steps on your kicks, shiv the fucker in the neck right then and there - without warning! If you don't you won't get any respect, and you'll be treated like a punk and used to pay gambling debts.

(Or is that prison... I forget? Either way it's good advice).

I won't know until I get back, but I can and have taught all four years.

Our last day of school is June 28th, and we haven't gotten out for a snow day even when the trains and busses don't run.

At 6 inches, we're expected to drive/walk/teleport to school anyway... and we generally get 3-6 inches. Except for when we get 20.

Ah yes, Latin class... you learn lots of English in there...

No, I'm serious. we spent the first 6 or so weeks covering grammar in English (and Latin) AND we had to learn Derivatives. That class was not easy... But that was in the before-time. Back when I was a freshman. Good times, good times...

EDIT: I read somewhere that the high school I attended is making a special institute for freshmen... yes, the freshmen classes will now be huddled together... proving once again that all school systems want students to never make it in college...

Sunny florida has something like that: HURRICANE DAYS!

Like snow days, but with the possibility of going to school with no power at your house when it is about 5000 DEGREES OUTSIDE! In effect, your house becomes an oven... and you have to get the Red Cross/FEMA food made from puke or whatever they make that out of... it all mixes so you get pasta-y green bean and peach soup. Grossest food ever...

Ô non! Le français est très bien. J'apprendrais le français pour toutes mes quatre années de lycée et ma primière anée d'Université.

But Lexington SC, you're going to have one hell of a time in High School. This is what my dad told me those (Jesus! I never thought about how long it was) five years ago:

"You're going to meet people who think things you've never thought before. You'll learn things that you've never imagined knowing. You'll become friends with people who you would have never existed. You will listen to music you've never heard. You'll see things you've never seen. You would not recognize the you from four years from now if you were to meet him today. Four years from now, you won't believe you ever were like you are now. Remember these things I'm telling you because they are very important. Sex will be all around you. Go as far as you want, but don't do anything unsafe, and always appreciate the girls you're with. Drugs will be all around you, too. Do what you want, but remember drugs are there so that you can better understand yourself. Go out and make me proud. Make sure you teach those assholes at your school something."

Have fun, kiddo.

I've been told this many times. Don't worry, I'm not a slacker or anything I just hadn't realized that I was actually BACK IN school.

To the person who wrote about the summer project. I had one this summer and last summer. The one for tenth grade english was on Lord of the Flies and A Seperate Peace. It was a total of 27 pages long. The one this summer was on A Raisin in the Sun and The Grapes of Wrath. It hit about 35 pages.

I (surprise surprise) love to write, and took Creative Writing in my freshman year.

I got to the first class, and there were fifty people in it. The professor stormed in precisely on time, threw his bag on the desk, and said that if we were there because we thought this was going to be an easy A, we could get the hell out right now. There were going to be written assignments EVERY day, and they better be in because they were going to be critiqued EVERY DAY.

On the second day, there were 45 people there. He told us again how this was NOT an easy course, and hand in our assignments now (no finishing them in class). He had us read some deadly grammar stuff and went over punctuation, etc. All through high school, I'd gotten A+ on anything I handed in. I honestly had written something the night before that took me maybe half an hour to write, a dialogue, as was assigned. I sat there thinking, "Well, gee, that assignment wasn't hard at all."

The third day, there were 28 people in the class. He came in and told us our work was graded and started to hand them back. I was horrified when he handed me my paper, which said in one inch tall blood red marker C-, THIS IS CRAP!!!! As I sputtered, he yelled at me that it was garbage, it was insulting to hand in something that couldn't have taken more than a half hour to write (nailed!) and that it was derivative. It belonged in the TOILET! and he expected better. If I didn't want to work, stop wasting time and drop the class!

While I was sitting there caught between anger, hurt, humiliation and knowing he was absolutely right about the effort I put into it, he delivered the last line: "Oh, and by the way, I DON'T GIVE As."

To my horror I heard myself snap back, "Well, get ready, because this term you WILL." And this woman behind me said, "Me too."

The fourth day there were 15 people left in the class, and he was far more relaxed. He was brutally honest, but not an utter asshole about it. And looking back on it, I can see what the sneaky bastard was up to: you can't have an effective writer's workshop with 50 people in it. But you can with about 15-20. He scared off anyone who wasn't really serious about their writing so he'd be left with the dedicated ones, or dumbasses like me who mouthed off and couldn't take a withdrawal without looking like a coward. (Oh, yeah. And I happened to be dedicated, too. I worked my ass off like I'd never done before.)

A couple weeks before the end of the term, I was called into the English Department along with the lady who'd sat behind me. The chairman finally seated us in his office, looked at us and asked if we knew why we were there. We didn't, so he said, "Well, I just wanted to see who earned the first two As in Creative Writing in the past ten years."

It was probably the hardest class I ever took... but it was also by far, the most rewarding. :D

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Show-off. :D Actually, there really wasn't any significant difference in the course I took compared to the one I dropped. Just with a less egotistical Prof. Got an A. Fun semester, that first one. also got an A in astronomy; I thin I was the only one in that class that understood what the guy was talking about. My grades went downhill after that, but we won't go into that. now all these years later, I'm back to finish that degree I started the year most of my fellow students were born. Might actually make it this time. As an upperclassman, I get to concentrate on my major, and take classes in something I love to do.

More power to ya. ;) I remember being in courses where everyone was 19 and 20, and there would be a forty or sixty year old person in there, and I'd be blown away by how old they were.

Except for when we get 20.
darn lucky you made that now homework help rule... i would ask you for help on ym english hw every nite lol :D

Y'all have already started school? Woah, we still have 'til Sept. 6th or 7th.
Ha, ha, freshie! I'm older than you! :p

I remember my first day of highschool. I sat in my Advisory (homeroom for people not in Texas) from 7:20 to well past 9:30, because we weren't allowed to go to class until all papers were turned in, says the 5A highschool. I was an idiot as a freshman though, didn't do my homework, and spent all day on aim, talking to the girl I currently was enamored with, then spent the rest of my freshman year (1st semester atleast) depressed over losing her...hehehe

Classes at my college start on the 28th, I get up there the 22nd or 23rd. It's a 9 hour drive...oh boy! (well 9 hours assuming I keep it under 100 miles an hour ;))
