Turn on your damned headlights

It's raining here right now, fairly dark out, very grey day. It's been raining since 0530 when I was first out. For some reason people seem to think that 530 in the damn morning is an appropriate hour to be driving around with no headlights on, in the rain.

Not the first time I've seen it, infact I've seen it dozens of times. Usually people driving black or grey vehicles that for some reason think turning their lights on will cost them more money. Although on foggy days I have noted it tends to be grey or white vehicles.

Just turn your damn lights on! Or don't, I suppose I could look at it from a darwinian angle, if you're too fucking stupid to hit your lights then you'll swiftly be removed from the gene pool.

Here in Virginia, if it's raining, you are required by law to turn on your headlights AND your wipers.

Headlights and wipers, at the same time, regardless of whether it's 12 noon or not.

I don't really mind other people removing themselves from the gene pool, but I object to them taking others with them.

Too many people forget that headlights are more about other people seeing you, than illuminating the road for you to see.

Unless you're on a completely unlit road, alone, highbeams blahblah etc.

I was always “religious” about such things as well but now with my new car I have dusk sensors too that do very good to help me out on those very rare occasions I happen to forget

My pickup is one of those vehicles where if the key is on, so are the lights. Hitting the switch for the lights just turns on the instrument panel lights. Though I'm not sure about the tail lights, never been bored enough to check.

last winter when I was on my way home from work late one evening I had the joy of seeing a police car heading towards me.

It took a while to actually figure what the hell it was....the blue flashing lights and all the rest of the paraphanalia was on....except the head lights.

Yep.

I went nuts and called into the cop shop...silly silly me. Nearly ended up getting arrested when this young officer basically said I was talking rubbish and that I should not lie.

:eeerrrrrkkkkkk:

I've had those. Rubbish! They go off when the sun is out and come on if a cloud comes over. I've driven along with people in front wondering why on earth I'm flashing at them.

There was talk of introducing a law here that required drivers to have sidelights on at all times. Even in full daylight they increase visibility and reduce accidents; I don't see any reason why we shouldn't keep them on.

I thought there was already a law saying that lights must be on during rainfall....

I might also add that quite a few cars are sold in the US now with "driving lights" - i.e., your headlights are on all the time that the car is running.

Same effect.

There are some people who are obviously too stupid to drive. I'm surprised that cars don't come with respirators for those folks.
