Ok, last Friday when I was driving home from the airport, I was listening to Jason Lewis (it was his last show here, he's moving to Minnisota for a better job on an FM station), and they talk about Al Franken running for senate in Minnisota. Is anyone really in Minn. really going to vote for this guy? I mean jeez....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Franken#Political_aspirations

Wiki article on it. He's as left wing as Hillary, if not more, he has about the same amount of chances of actually being voted into office as her too.

Actually, Franken's pretty centrist on a lot of issues. He's only left wing if you consider the Republican party to be centrist. But of course, you're too busy making unwitty remarks and trying to pass them off as snark to actually make a comment.

One thing is accurate in your post however--he's probably as left wing as Hillary, maybe slightly more so. Of course, as Sovietstan pointed out, Hillary's not exactly left-leaning either. If you want a liberal Senator, take a look at Tom Harkin or Barbara Boxer. They're liberal. Hillary's on the conservative side of the Democratc party, and that's a big part of the reason that, despite her huge money lead right now, she probably won't win the Democratic nomination in 2008.

As for Franken's intelligence and ability to be an effective Senator, well, any party that has the likes of Sam Brownback, Tom Coburn, James Inhofe, and Rick Santorum representing it in the Senate ought not be making disparaging remarks about the intelligence of others.

Hillary Clinton is "left wing" like Joe Lieberman is "left wing." Which is to say, not remotely left wing in any way, shape, or form. She's a moderate at best.

But then, America doesn't have a left wing in politics any more. We have Republicans (R) and People Who Are Scared Of Republicans For Absolutely No Reason (D).

I've always thought she would score astonishingly high on any "authoritarian" scale.

Anyone who has the balls to tell FBI agents to get out of a room where they are conducting an investigation is a real authority figure. The stuff I've heard her say makes Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld look like pansies.

To be an effective Senator Franken would need show up when the Senate is in session and vote. He would also need to debate on the floor in a respectful way. He would need to propose bills and attempt to gather support for them. He would also need to attempt to gather support for himself to be appointed to at least one high visibility committees with clout. To be a good Senator as well as an effective one he would need to attempt to represent Minnesotans first and party second. All Minnesotans not just the ones who vote for him.

All of these things to some degree require his political clout to grow and his friendly and respectful and professional cooperation with Republicans. At the moment he has no political clout whatsoever and he has actively insulted pranked and pissed off most of the Republicans. Any he missed were by oversight and not by kindness or sense of reasonableness on Franken's part. In short he would end up hopping into the Senate on a lark only to find out that he has sowed much more animosity than support.

In short Minnesotans would have a powerless comedian of a Senator on the political back burner. For an effective Senator Minnesota would be better off electing someone with political clout or without political baggage.

Right now, all you have to do is get along with your own party, because there's no such thing as bipartisanship right now. The Republicans have redefined bipartisanship as capitulation, so if Franken were elected and in the minority, then shit-talking is just what I would expect from him, and if he were in the majority (he'd be replacing a Republican, after all), then I'd hope he'd keep up the shit-talking.

One must learn to approach current problems with new and innovative solutions.

It's obvious that none of the old solutions bore any positive fruit.

Just because many would be squeamish to actually implement such a thing, does not mean it must at least be given some technical consideration.

Hitler tried this "new" solution with Jews. Didn't work.

Just because many would be squeamish to actually implement such a thing, does not mean it must at least be given some technical consideration.
It's against my Christian faith, morality, civilisation in general, and human rights. I also question whether it would actually be in our best interests.

By your apparent mentality on the issue, you would never have dropped the atomic bomb on two Japanese cities.

Your proposals are more akin to the Final Solution than the atomic bombs.

Wow, that "pander to the center" play in Hillary's playbook really paid off, she got you guys fooled.

...how do you pander to the center anyways?

Just puttin' this out there:
Gopher from The Love Boat is a congressman.
Sonnny Bono of Sonny and Cher was a congressman.
Jesse "The Body" Ventura, prpfessional wrestler, was a governer.
Clint Eastwood was mayor of Carmel.
Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenagger, both actors, both governers of California.

Is it so hard to believe that a comedian would be elected to congress?

I'd vote for him if he'd stop crying every time Ann Coulter makes fun of him. Really ... no-one should take Ann Coulter that seriously.

Ah, a kindred spirit then?
You flatter yourself. The difference between us is that my side is actually right, and I don't need to depend on bullshit talking points.

Seriously. If you have a 'side' then you probably aren't right either.

People like Al Franken are the reason my home is known as the welfare state where nothing is allowed.

And Nazz, are you keeping your head in your ass for the warmth? Since when has prohibition and excessive taxation for unnecessary programs ever been right? R.T. Rybak seems more concerned with planting grass on rooftops than hiring the 71 cops he was suposed to. He spent $1.7 million on a new "green" roof for city hall but couldn't see to it that 71 new officers get hired?

Ok, last Friday when I was driving home from the airport, I was listening to Jason Lewis (it was his last show here, he's moving to Minnisota for a better job on an FM station), and they talk about Al Franken running for senate in Minnisota. Is anyone really in Minn. really going to vote for this guy? I mean jeez....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Franken#Political_aspirations

Wiki article on it. He's as left wing as Hillary, if not more, he has about the same amount of chances of actually being voted into office as her too.

Al Franken's a lying rat bastard.

I'd do a lot of nasty things before I ever voted for him.

I think it is.. I've only visited the extreme south of the Philippines, aside from a day in Manila on layover.. it's cool, but it's true that prostitution is kinda widespread. Heckling the streetwalkers from balconies was a local pastime where I was in Davao and to a lesser degree, Gensan. :p

A liberal is someone who is so open minded, their brain has fallen out.

Excellent, the truth shall set them free once they pull their heads out of their asses and grow up.

Another of my favorites is...

Liberalism: knowledge untempered by wisdom or common sense.

If I were going to put a comedian in the white house it would be Denis Leary. Or Lewis Black. :)

Dennis Leary would be GREAT!!! I feel confident that DL would remove all the safeguards he possibly could and FINALLY let natural selection run it's course. Someone like that is LONG overdue, we are being over run by people that don't deserve to live, I say let their stupidity take them to the grave and quit protecting them!!!
