I have been watching a lot of fan subbed anime recently and just wanted to make a standard poll to determine others preferences about your anime.

Got to be subtitles. I've yet to see any that were dubbed and *didn't* sound stupid.

Defiantly Japanese with subtitles. Dubbed anime just isn't the same.

the only dubbed one I like was Gundam SEED and Ghost in the Shell S.A.C (have not heard the comparisons to either though in Japanese) the rest I have watched, have had to be in Japanese with subtitles.

I'm happy to see that most people seem to prefer it with subitles.

In all honesty, I don't even like most anime. (I had a friend who was a diehard before it hit huge on the american market, so I was oversaturated with the shit before everyone else was oversaturated with the shit.... That's a lot of shit.)

But even if you're not talking 'anime', most foreign language films are better seen with the performances of the original actors. 'Dubs' don't usually do justice to the original artist.

It's one of my favorite series, and I'd say it's better than most of the anime out there.
The manga is really good too.

Whenever I watched it, it was just Al (Or is it Ed? The metal boy...) whining in a huge monologue. And he's SO annoying.

Well, they all tend to have really sexy, unrealistic hair. As a balding guy, I can relate to the sexiness of it.

Subs. Dubs suck and I can't speak enough Japanese to make head or tails of most of the dialogue yet.

Does it really matter if tenticle rape is subtitled or dubbed? Seriously, it's just cartoons.

I had my anime phase when I was 12 or so. Can't say I like it anymore, along with the total wierdos at my school who love it. A phew series are good, or seemed good when I was 12, like Gundam Wing and Neon Genesis Evangalion.

But NGE was better with subtitles.

I still think the Gundam series and Robotech are cool, though I don't watch them anymore.

You forgot the premier and sensible choice here: American cartoons written in American and voiced by Americans to be aired in America. With various objects actually drawn in proportion. I enjoy anime, but given the choice, I'd pick something Western to any anime, simply for the fact that I have yet to see a normal guy with normal strength lift a mega-f*^%ing huge sword in Western cartoons.

Being unable to see the vast majority of anime in it's original language, I'm used to American voices Dubbed.

I'm a sub fan myself, unless I started to watch the series in English already. I've seen for fairly good dubs, but subs are pretty much the best.

I actually prefer dubbed anime, which is weird, considering that I used to refuse to watch it any way other than in Japanese with subtitles. I'm not sure if it's from going to cons and becoming a fan of a few English voice actors or if it's just the fact that I'd buy manga if I wanted to read my anime, but that's how it turned out.

For most series, I do watch it both ways if possible, to make sure that I have the best grasp of the story that I can and also to fully appreciate the art, since it tends to get mangled in the process of making characters' mouths move with the English words. There are a few cases, though, in which I have no desire at all to see the original Japanese version. The first example that comes to mind is Ghost Stories, which is terrible and utterly forgettable in its original form. I know it's generally a taboo, but the best thing they did was let the voice actors ad-lib their lines and completely change the characters to make it very much like a fan parody.

I usually don't really care either way....if it's english dubbed then I don't care, if it's Japanese with subtitles I don't care. Actually it's sometimes funnier with Japanese, I dunno why.

I have yet to meet an enjoyable and artistically interesting western cartoon show. Ever.

They can't compare to Progressive Anime.

Other Anime is ok too, but Progressive Anime has artistic value that American Movies and cartoons have been lacking for 30+ years.

I prefer dubbed, as long as it hasn't passed through 4Kids Entertainment first.

Subbed, there are actual good dubs out there, but many miss (sometimes compleatly) what the orginal VA was doing and more importantly, why.

Of course I am now so used to hearing Japanese that it sounds odd to hear English.

I'm posting here not because I'm an anime fan,because I'm not. I'm posting here because you bring up a good point of subtitles v. dubbed. Subtitles are far better and should be used for everything not just anime. Here's why. With dubbed you lose the emotion and it is also usually choppy English which makes it hard to understand what is going on. Its much easier to just let me read it. Plus you lose the ability to listen to the people speak in their native tongue, which is often quite nice. So as you can see subtitles clean the floor with dubs.

Subs all the way. Honestly, sometimes dub actors are so bad I wonder if the studio just went out on the street and picked up some random people to do the voices. They have no emotion, no timing, and utterly fail to pronounce any Japanese name.

There are of course, some exceptions. Brett Weaver, for example, is very good at ad-libbing humorous things and such. But for the most part, I always go with subs.

I hate Dubbed. but I've resigned myself that they will always be around.

and some companies can actually do it right.

Subs, I only own two anime films (Patlabor 1 & 2) and they're ok with dubbed sound, but to miss the original inflection of the words whilst reading the subs if far better...besides, I've watched em so much I just listen now...I know what they're sayin...:D

Woah NO way Full Metal Alchemist is my favourite. And It was dubbed very well and not watered down for the sensitive english audience

I prefer my anime in english because I find that the subtitles take my focus away from the action on the screen.

In many translations (this isn't just Japanese to English, people), voice actors who do the dub work miss. Sometimes completely. And quite often, the actors chosen aren't even right for the part.

It's sad, really. Though I must say that the American voice actor for Goku of Dragon Ball Z is much more tolerable than the original Japanese one...

I used to watch dubs...until I heard the English voice for Konno Mitsune on Love Hina. *shudders*
Really, I'd rather hear the original voices. I woud watch non-subbed so I wouldn't have to read, alas, I don't speak Nihongo.

1: Yeah, that's the worst thing about translations. It's bad enough on Anime, but it's downright disgusting on video games, especially older ones (SNES RPG's).

1) I do blame crappy translations for "all your base are belong to us". If only the translator for that game hadn't been so lazy we would never have to see that phrase on the internet...

1: Zero Wing was bad, yeah, but Engrish isn't the worst of it. Total changes in the translation in RPG's is the worst, since it's knowingly altering the artists' original work. Ted Woolsey was the worst of them all, having totally ruined the dialogue in various SNES RPG's, among them Final Fantasy II (or IV, as it should be known), Final Fantasy III (VI...), and Chrono Trigger. He didn't just alter a few things. He totally changed everything, making it as if a twelve-year-old (a stupid one, at that) wrote the dialogue. References to the Bible and Rock bands where there were none in the original Japanese iterations are prevalent in the names of various characters.

I guess it depends on the graphical quality of the anime, and whether the dubbing is acceptable or distracting. Film4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film4) have been showing Studio Ghibli films this week with dubbing, and next week they're showing them again but with subtitles instead, so I gues I could watch each film twice and work out what works better.

While I will admit that the quality of Dubbed films are getting better, especially when the big companies get involved. I still preferre subbed.

There was one voice actress who dubbed over an anime in english who I thought was quite good. She was extremely hyper and squeeky, I'd never heard english spoke so fast! I can't remember what it was in though, it has been a few years since I saw it. Was it puny puny poemy or something, or am I just confused? Nevermind, it was one of the few animes I saw in english anyway. I much prefer to hear the original voice actors.

That depends upon which film it is. I know it's not anime, but Nightwatch is best with the subtitles on because they're linked to the action they are covering. Plus the dubbing's horrendous.

You ever want to be more than usually confused by an anime film? Watch it dubbed with subtitles. I haven't seen a film yet where the two match.

I can't stand most dubbed anime, where the hell do they dig up these terrible voice actors from? I want to know if theres a place people go to learn to be a terrible VA for dubbed anime, I'd burn the place down :mad:
