Fua

I was looking at the wiki article about nationstates and came about this: Some players assert that game moderators hold a left-wing bias. [1]] Others assert that the moderators are too strict and delete any players whom challenge them with an argument. [citation needed] A polarizing issue arose in 2004 when a number of ex-players created an offsite forum named FUA. [2] Moderators declared that if anybody linked to FUA, they would be deleted (on the grounds that the site had pornographic pop-up advertisements). When the forum ceased to exist, moderators celebrated, which was seen as irresponsible. [3] I can get much info out of the mods, so does anyone know anything else about it?

I remember the FUA forum and was a member of it while it existed.

Basically, before moving to Jolt, the old General forum was slow. Some guy who was sorta well-known at the time made another, initially faster forum. It pretty much fizzled out, I believe.

Edit: I can also say that, in the beginning, there was no porn on the FUA forum and it wasn't a bannable offense to link to it.. there was a thread on General advertising it, and I don't think it was shut down. I don't remember any political motivation being involved.

So is the new one if you're on dial-up: 150KB just for the thread list?! Luckily I'm on broadband now.

The article says you could be deleted for linking to it, which I never did. I had an account on the other forum with the same name (not my current one), but that didn't cause any trouble. A bunch of regulars posted on the FUA forum, but I don't remember seeing more than a hundred or so posts on it, total.

There was a period of about two or three months where the Mods here were really abusing thier "power", and going on a "FUA Purge".

They would barely tolerate the mention of Beeker's name among others, let alone any links to that forum.

They all took the verbal abuse of thier moderating decisions far too personally, and it got ugly here for a while.

I don't remember it being illegal to link to FUA. One dude would make a button to go to FAU. But it was people who felt persicuted on the regular forum so they made mountains out of molehills for everything the mods did.

It wasn't too long after mods themselves came into existance, so it was really the reaction of going from an unregulated enviroment to a regulated one. It seemed obnoxious to me, and all the catalysts had already happened when I joined, so I never bothered with it. At the time I wasn't really even all that sure I wanted to bother with NS, much less add another bunch of screaming monkeys to deal with.

No, links to FUA ended up being illegal. Trust me; I'm the one who banned them.

When a group of players forms their own forum because they don't like how things are run, I occationally take a look so as to see what's going on. FUA didn't require registration, so it was wide open to anybody who wanted to look. When I noticed that a number of the people there were IP Banned and DoS players from here, I kept a closer eye on things.

Also, you need to keep in mind that this was before the move to Jolt, when the NS forums were dying a slow, painful death. The best time to access the forums was approximately a 2 hour window in the middle of the night. Accessing at any other time meant you frequently were spending a hour to get a page to load. This frequently led to using tabs to try and load numerous pages at once which, of course, beat the snot out of the system.

Anyway, many of the people on FUA were there because the bloody thing didn't lag (FUA was unique in this, mind; this is the time that alliance and regional forums became hugely popular). I believe that the main reason Parratoga hopped over was because there wasn't any lag. At least, as far as I know, there wasn't much friction between her and us. She got pissed about the whole swastica thing, but wasn't ever a source of problems or backbiting.

So, you had a forum that had some normal players who wanted a General forum that didn't lag, and you had a number of... shall we say... undesirable people. Still, we didn't have a problem with it. It wasn't a place that I would have enjoyed, but I would occationally take a look, especially when NS was dragging. Yes, the popup ads were irritating, but I learned to ignore those long ago. Until the day that the popup it gave me was a porn ad. I'm sure you've seen them before, the ones that have a handful of naked women with numerous links.

I'm far from a prude, but rules is rules. If a site links to porn, you can't link to it here. FUA was banned.

Most players understood this. Some were shocked as they'd never gotten such ads. A very few viewed it as further "proof" of moderator bias. Of course, many of them would view stubbing their toe in the middle of the night as proof of moderator bias.

As for why it went away, that's not something I had anything to do with. Somebody, I don't know who (or, don't remember who), pointed their hosting company to the "Flame Forum" they had. To say it violated the ToS was an understatement and the host flushed the forum.

Moderators declared that if anybody linked to FUA, they would be deleted (on the grounds that the site had pornographic pop-up advertisements)
hehe we had that for linking to the Athar forums... not because of porn popups or whatever, just because it was a heanous den of pure spam ;) :p

I suppose the spamming, the flaming, the porn, the suicides-by-mod, and so on, all played their role. Some quit in protest just because one or another popular troublemaker got banned, many felt that they should have been treated more leniently because they were an 'irreplaceable' part of the then culture. But the absurd egotistical delusion that the forum royalty somehow made this site complete, really began to die when people realised they had school exams to pass.

I don't even remember most of their names. There was a brief good time that lasted perhaps half a year, but it passed. It might have lasted longer, had people persuaded their friends to act in a considerate manner, rather than stand up for them regardless. I was looking at the wiki article about nationstates and came about this: I can get much info out of the mods, so does anyone know anything else about it?

This happened before the time of Jolt? You can also whine to Jolt about mods you know, mods arent the highest authority...

They pass it to the man supervising the mods. Or so I've been lied by the shadowy smoking men...The Jolt guy also told me mods are usually doing a good job...

Good thing I had that large idelogical (can't even spell that right, I am a sad NSer) shift about two weeks ago.

EDIT: Don't worry. I am a spammer there, like I am here.

'Course they do, 'course they do..

And this really isn't just a way to poach members for your 'new' board either. :p

Probably not. This seems to be the result of an ever changing Wikipedia article and LexingtonSC tenaciously asking questions until he gets an answer from as close to the horses mouth as possible. Im not saying that the Empress wouldnt like some new members in the forum her friend started, Im saying that if this thread is an artifice set up for that purpose it is one of the longest most patient schemes of this sort ever tried.

Cryptic Queen deated you because the only post you made was spamming and in the wrong forum...Its more that you did it on purpose.

People have been known to lie.

Look into Lady Blue Moon. IP Banned for stealing dozens of passwords. And how did she do that? By exploiting a hole in Proboard's security.

And I've never seen a popup from Invision. There's a reason most NS-related forums use Invision.

Invision's space is limited. Proboards is not and you are still being very vague.

You didn't see the post. But for the most part it was because he did it to defame the forum and was encourged by the admins here to do it...at least thats what I was told. But they are very lax on post things...too lax for my tastes.
