So, I am an amateur at it, but I want to do it, since its alot of fun, however, all i have right now is Windows Movie Maker(or whatever its called) and it sucks. What can you suggest i buy or download? I want the option to play licensed materials, i want to be able to have many different file types to use, and i would like it to be a little more user friendly, as I am still an amateur at it. Thanks for anyhelp :)

Vegas is an upgrade but not groundbreaking just a good solid piece of software

Jahshaka is open source. I guess that's cheap enough. Don't know how good it is, though. You may want to read a few related magazines for product reviews.

Still, I don't know how good that is. Open Source software sometimes is very advanced, sometimes not so much.

Not really. It cannot work with very many filetypes. Even ones that work fine on Windows Media Player (stupid name). You can tell they do not pay much attention to it.

It does get a major overhaul for Vista, IIRC.

I feel like I should reply, but I use Final Cut which is both expensive (yay school discount on my now very dated version) and you have to have a Mac. Not really worth it if you're just hobbying.

I will in a week finally have something to shoot footage to edit with, even if it's expensive as all hell to get the medium...

I just glazed over looking at it.

Besides, between Vista's highram usage and my bad ram, everything was a lil buggy, and allot crashy.

Ehhh I was never all that impressed with final cut … its not bad but in the end I guess I like vegas a bit more for software

Not to mention that vegas runs distributed on 2 processes … not a big deal for most people unless they are like me running 2 processors so I can span and cut my encoding time down by 50%

WTF? Have you seen those new Future Shop commercials? "Get a dual-core so you can listen to music, use the internet and write an essay all at the same time" LOL, no wonder you have a job. You just need to meet XP's min specs to do that.:D

Yeah kick your ram up to a gig and you will do all that comfortably

Kick it up to 2 gigs and you can add BF2 on top of all that :)

FCPs been doing that since 4.5 I believe, to run on the G5 dual processors. For me it's all about industry standard. I don't see many listings for a Vegas editor, but I do for Final Cut and Avid (Avid I don't have. I wish I did.)

You have high standards of comfortable.

I can do that comfortably with 224MiB (rofl, that PC is so fucked right now. right clicking does not work. you have menu+click to get the context sensative menu, which appears at the top right of the window/desktop), 1GiB for BF2.

Oh you can do it … I was talking about flawless integration without ANY performance hit.

If you are willing to take a bit you can do it on much less

(like right now the hot that it is windows when you give it a FREE leash takes about 500 MB of ram … I sit at about 700 but that’s with a lot of shit open)

Vista idled at 576 fo' me. I have no idea where XP idles for me. I frankly don't have that much faith in it. When it says you have more mem than BIOS can detect, something ain't right.

i found it difficult to use and a piece of shit.... then again, it was an old version (before even real-time effects were added and you had to re-render the entire clip just to see what a single change did  :headbang: ), and i don't generally like adobe's non-intuitive GUI
it also didn't like the resolution of the Canon XM1 we have (i think 4,000x4,000) and crashed a lot.
unless you go for the latest, latest version, i couldn't possibly recommend Premier

i've made some fairly pro-looking stuff with the free windows movie maker program that's been shown at conferences and things, and gone down well. the only problem i had wasn't in fact anything to do with the program (it did a great job of splicing up the DV files and couldn't have been easier to use in simply arranging clips of interviews - nothing fancy, it just did the job) but with my camera's microphone.
(edit: i'm not saying it does a great professional job, but its free and easy to use (for me) and just does the job unless you want fancy stuff)

Ok, a bit harder question. What you guys recommend for pro use? My boss is finally going to change the whole edit system and we can't decide between Final Cut and Avid. There's nothing worth saving in the old system so he'd buy new hardware in any case. I haven't really used either (just some very basic editing).

The one I've enjoyed the most was Liquid Silver (Fast, back then) and the worst one ever has been Discreet (Pinnacle).

Probably Avid, it's still faster and more, for lack of a better term, durable. Most of the time when I work with broadcast shows they all still edit on Avid, saying that Final Cut hasn't quite caught up in a high volumne setting. For low volumne editing Final Cut is great, and cheaper. So it depends on the level of editing you're doing and how much you want to spend on it.

Very, very small company (I'm the film and sound editor, script writer, graphic designer ;) ) We would survive with Final Cut, almost got it already, but now another company is trying to sell all their edits and they have one brand new Avid...and the price isn't too bad.

If they where the same price, I'd get the Avid. Though I like using Final Cut but that's just because I'm used to it.

Do what I do. Take snippets from your favorite porn, edit them together with your favorite music as the soundtrack.

It's good practice, and it's fun.
