Greatest Sci-Fi Villain of all time

IDF
07-08-2006, 06:52
I'd have to say Gul Dukat from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Unlike the cliche villains on Star Wars, he is a multi-dimensional character who draws a variety of reactions from the viewers and those around him.

We of course know his history as Prefect of Bajor where he killed millions. THis history of course draws a negative light on him. Regardless of what happened, by comparison to other Cardassians, he was humane. He ended child labor and cut worker quotas.

During the first few seasons of DS9, we see multiple sides of him. Dukat was an ally of the Federation. when it came to fighting the Klingons when a Changeling replaced General Martok and convinced Gowron to fight the Federation.

We saw a major change in Dukat when he found his half-Bajoran daughter Ziyal. He originally was going to kill her to cover up her existance. Major Kira stopped him. ONce Dukat and Ziyal had a close father-daughter relationship, you could see Dukat in a better light. Dukat once again helped the Federation as he fought the Klingons in his stolen bird of prey.

Just when we think Dukat has changed, he announces that he had been in secret talks with the Dominion. In exchange for leadership over Cardassia, the Cardassian Union became an ally of the Dominion. Dukat and Weyoun then lead the attack on DS9 to begin the DOminion War.

When the station was retaken, Ziyal was killed and Dukat had a mental breakdown. Despite his many crimes, the viewer actually felt sympathy for him. This changed once a demented Dukat became even more deranged and swore that he would destroy Bajor. This all lead to his pact with the Pah-Wraiths. Dukat released a Pah-Wraith into the wormhole with the intent to destroy the Bajoran people. In the process, he killed my favorite character.:( (We still miss you Jadzia Dax)

Dukat was a great villain. He could surprise the viewer. Unlike most Sci-Fi characters, it was hard to judge initially whether he was truly evil or good. When we made a judgement leaning one way, he'd surprise you and make you question your previous judgement.

Dukat has some depth, and at times you think he may not be that bad, just from a radically different culture. But other times he is clearly evil as hell. He is a sufficient villain most of the time, but there are several sci-fi heavy's that I think are much better- Vader in particular.

And I am more fed up with Bush/Shrub/Bushisms/Anti-Bush everything than I am with Chuck Norris. Let me say, that's pretty damn bad. So I understand IDF's reaction.

To be honest, the greatest sci-fi stories don't have a real villain. It's too black and white when it's good vs evil, too two-dimensional.

Scariest:
The “Alien” in the first Alien movie, before he became an automaton robot warrior of the later movies, the first one scared the shit out of people.

Most in your face: Darth Vader in IV, and V.

Most unbeatable villain, the one the hero can’t actually beat and the audience is left thinking, “damn” at the end of the movie, it’s a tie:
-The “Man,” the bureaucracy itself, the Government with a secret in Soylent Green.
-The Ape world itself and not being able to return home in the original Planet of the Apes, before the sequels messed over the whole thing.

Actually in terms of the 'greatest' villian it would be Yoda. His efforts to maintain, then regain the rule of the elitist and genetically superior order of the jedi are truly amazing. Even after losing his perch on top of the galaxy to the empire, he then masterminds a plan to topple the empire itself (at the expense of the trillions upon trillions of inhabitants in the empire. This would most likely end in a galactic chaos, where it would be easy for the jedi to lord it over the rabble.

First off, anyone who says that a Star Wars villain is one of the best has no taste and no ability to determine the quality of a character.

Second off, no one from Stargate would qualify either. While fun and whatnot, it's not up to Star Trek's quality.

Third off, not even Gul Dukat qualifies. I'm sorry, but even with his depth, he's nowhere near the best.

There is only one man for the best. Only one person for the job. We all know his name. We all scream it in agony. It is, the one and only: KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

Shouldn't there be some definition of what a "villain" is? Are we talking "embodiment of pure evil," " Christ, this thing wants to eat me / impregnate me," or "this guy wants the opposite of me?" Scifi books, or films and tv?

Vader is pretty good, and has the best theme music ;)

Khan, too, is a contender. What about Baltar, or maybe Count Iblis?

I wouldn't say Dukat quite so much--he struck me as a man who had done terrible things, rather than a terrible man. After he was broken at Terak Nor, he became more of a tragic shell of a man, a ghost just waiting to be used by someone else.

The real villians were the Founders, especially the Changeling in charge of the Dominion in the Alpha Quadrant. Where Dukat was conflicted, these were cold as ice and utterly merciless. I still remember my first taste of the Dominion even better than I remember the end of The Best of Both Worlds Pt. I, and that was a long summer, when the Dominion absolutely tore the Odyssey apart. The Founders didn't disappoint after that, engineering the takeover of the Cardassian Union, setting Romulans, Klingons, and Feds against each other, and all the time manipulating behind the scenes for total control. Even at the end, when the Federation had finally driven them to the last, the Dominion still held for no other reason than to systematically murder every Cardassian on Cardassia and to make the cost of victory so high that the Gamma Quadrant would always be safe. The worst thing for me, however, was the little touches, like when a Changeling masqueraded as Nerys only to fool Odo into thinking that his love died in front of his eyes, then reforming to inform him coldly that she would never love him in return. Say what you want, but that's just sadistic.
