What's your Body Mass Index?

Mine is 17.1, which is in the normal range for a teenage girl (but would be underweight if I were an adult), and at the 14th percentile for Americans of my age, height (I'm 5'6''), and gender.

according to the BMI calc. I am obese (not sharing my number)

but I went in to have the body fat percentage thingy, and I have a body fat percentage of 27% which is far from obese and is actually pretty normal for my age and after 2 kids.

My doctor says I have a lot of muscle.

Yeah. Take all the popular girls at my school. They're all probably somewhere between 16 and 18 in BMI, and yet they were always the last to finish when we ran in PE. Plus, my BMI has actually risen since I started running, because of all the new muscle mass.

That is one problem with BMI- it doesn't take muscle into account very well. The website itself mentions it, too.

Another problem is that it's different for children, too. If I were two years older, I'd be underweight and in the "anorexia" range of the chart below.

Adults Women Men
anorexia < 17.5
underweight <19.1 <20.7
in normal range ideal weight 19.1-25.8 20.7-26.4
marginally overweight 25.8-27.3 26.4-27.8
overweight 27.3-32.3 27.8-31.1
very overweight or obese >32.3 >31.1
severely obese 35 - 40
morbidly obese 40 - 50
super obese 50 - 60 kg/m2

[But what's more interesting: Either I have visited this webpage before (which seems kind of unlikely) or I just had a déjà-vu, including me correcting the age-range after my initial punching in the numbers. Now that's heavy! :D]

Problem with body fat is that it's difficult to measure, especially accurately. I don't know my percentage, as I dislike my doctor, and refuse to see him.

OMG!!! If I weighed any less I'd be anorexic. Should I be worried or is this test not reliable? I always thought I was healthy. I guess not, I'll have to eat some more. I've just ate chicken madras with fries not too long ago, I don't think I can manage to eat anymore. I guess I'll just have to wait for a while, then eat as much junk food as I possible can before I go to bed.

No I don't. I've actually put on a little weight as I've not done any strenuous excercise in about two months. (I used to train nearly every day, as well as travel by bicycle). I've got an inch to my stomach now, but I'm not really bothered. I still eat my usual junk food. *Shrugs* I actually thought I was very healthy. I probably am, and I'm worrying over nothing. Yeah, and for those of us with big builds, it's not so reliable. I mean, I'm 140 pounds, and while I definitely don't have a bulging stomach, I still look "big". I also have manboobs. But hey, manboobs are better than having a non-existent chest.

And I have lean muscle mass in my arms with very little fat. I also have a lot of muscle mass in my legs... There's some fat there, but not much. I'd say about 3%.

I think that is a fair assessment of the situation.

When I went to that page I forgot what age I was, and entered 33 - it told me I was 'In Normal Range', I then realised I was actually 34, and it told me I was underweight. I have little time for such arbitrary distinctions.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, then. Someone could easily be in the range considered "anorexic" without actually having anorexia.
