I wonder what life was like before the internet?

Not that much different....just a bit slower...

But there is a difference between the internet and the World Wide Web....

The internet is the transport mechanism while the WWW is a communications tool that runs on top of the internet. Basically :)

No! The Internet is a series of tubes. Or so congress tells us.

Funnily enough it was pr0n that allowed the internet to expand as rapidly as it has. The ease of the WWW concept also drove that expansion.

Tube - yeah...I tried listening to the esteemed senator...but the guy was talking sheer gibberish. I'd have expected more from a political leader. Not! ;)

I wonder what life was like before the internet?

The pre-Internet hominids used stone tools and worshipped some sort of religious icon called "Betamax". [nods knowledgeably]

Speaking seriously, though, the WWW is not the same as the Internet. The Internet is the hardware network that the World Wide Web, a software communication protocol, runs on top of.

Ah yes, Lord Betamax, how I loved thee, with your reference-quality audio and video...

The first 15 years were great, but we can only wonder at what the next 15 will bring. I think it's going to kick more ass than we can imagine right now...

WWW != the internet (it is just a subset of it).

One thing is for sure....the current 'buzzword' is convergence.

The idea is to make the WWW available via many different tools from the normal computer (PC/Laptop) to telephones (3G and other wireless protocols) to your car and even your microwave and washing machine.

Some of these, like washing machines, will use the ability to connect to the internet to run diagnostics or even arrange service calls for an engineer to come over and look at the machine.

For me the ultimate horror will be when my cooker starts making recipe suggestions....that is the day I become a Luddite
