Why protest?

A very large, very loud group of protesters are protesting just outside my work in Sydney CBD as I type. They are protesting about Israel and all of it's Israelity. Largely Lebanese, they may be, there is also a sizable encore from the "Jews for Lebanon" brigade. This makes me wonder. While I support their message 100%, what are they trying to achieve? People who don't agree with them will only be galvanised by their 'hooliganism', and people who do believe them will nod thei heads approvingly. What is the purpose of such a protest?

It's not like it's isolated either. Most protests are simply rallies of discontent, with no forseeable goal or motivation. I understand union-style protests, where there are ultimatums and the like. But simply coming out on one day to yell in unison about something that is beyond yelling's control? Why bother?

Any hippie protesters out there? Why do you go? For the inclusion? For the illusion of sticking it to the apathetic man? What is the go?!

I believe the idea is mostly to raise awareness, to let people know that there are those out there that disagree with certain things. And I suppose that people like to feel like they are doing 'something', especially in a situation like the one in the Middle East at the moment where there is very little of substance people such as ourselves can really do.

What else can you do?

The government is going to do whatever the hell it wants to, and no one can stop it.
The only thing the average citizen can do, is at least let as many people hear your opinion.
Even if your enemy crushes you, can can at least die telling him how much he sucks.

I think it is true, it was people like you, that crucified Christ.
I think it is sad, the opinion you had, was the only one voiced.

Look, people have it so good in America that they get bored very easily. And when people get bored they start protesting things.

in the hope that if enough people go out on the streets and make enough noise the government will take note and act like the democratic tool they are supposed to be by doing at least something to intervene for peace or at least adopt an official position on the matter in line with the protesters.

I think theres a difference between bitching and protesting.

To protest, you have to carry a sign, and chant things like "Hey-hey *clap* Ho-Ho......*insert target of protest has got to go!"

Actually that reminds me of something that happened a while ago. Basically, a bunch of bored housewies in USA formed a comittee to protest the fact that Australians got subsidised drugs of some sort. The basis being that if they didn't have them subsidised in USA, why should Australians be allowed. Same principle really. Too much time, too little to do, too good a life. Still, I think that was the first pang of anti-Americanism I ever felt, I was about 12 or 13.

We of course, do have plenty of stupid ones here, but there are those of us who have IQ's in the triple digits.

People protest so they can feel important when they really dont. They also do it because they think their leaders care what they think, which they dont. And they also like to get all uppity about things they say they wanted changed but in reality should just stay as the status quo.

I know the Eye Dee eff knows how to deal with protestors that violate the restrictions on protesting. If these guys fail to abide by the law in regards to peaceful protesting...1-800-IDF1

You're definitely correct that have achieved very little through their protest - minimal public awareness effects. I suspect it is a social occasion or a "pressure vent" issue from the grind of every day life.

That's true. We don't have koala bears over here, why should Australians be the only ones to taste the tender, tender koala meat?

I want my koala!
