School starts again for me on Monday, August 7. I was wondering when most people go back to school, because I'm guessing that my area starts earlier than most places. So, if you are a student, when do you go back to school?

September 6th at my High School in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts rocks. It's nice to see that at least some places let kids out of school for the entirety of Summer.
That's what it was like back in Port Aransas. When I went (Pre-Kindergarten through 1st Grade), school ended on May 29th and started again on September 21st. Of course, virtually everyone in that town was/is from New England (and the upper Midwest), where people actually understand the seasons, rather than go by archaic scheduling systems made for farmers.
As for me? Well, school starts as soon as I can afford it again. :p

High schools in my state don't start until after Labor Day. However, they are getting out later than they did when I was high school. I graduated in late May (of 2000) and kids this year graduated in early June.

Oh wow. Well, we get out around June 21st, and usually start right after Labor Day. But we also get anywhere from a week to two weeks for winter break, then a week for February vacation, and then a week for Spring Break in April. Also, we usually get a lot of little holidays off. Two and ahalf days off for Thanksgiving, most Jewish holidays, etc.
But it works, and I like not having to go back until the last day or two of August, or after Labor Day. (for some reason, it changes year-to-year)

Florida does. See, we have these tests in February and March that are required for graduation (and school scores influence funding for the schools). Both the math and the reading section are quite easy, and most students pass the math, but only half of students pass the reading on their first try in the sophomore year.
So the state keeps starting the school year earlier and earlier so that they have more time to prepare students for it. We get out in the third week of May, too.
It's nice to see that at least some places let kids out of school for the entirety of Summer.
See, if they let us out for the entirety of summer here in Florida, we'd hardly be in school.
Although, I'm so used to Florida (from spending my entire existence here) that I still have to wear a heavy coat in the 60 degree Farenheit weather that passes for winter here:)

1: Bah, I totally forgot about the whole difference in climate. But still, the end of May to the middle of September seems like the best bet. It's long without being too long, you know?
2: Heh. A few months ago, it was about 65 degrees here in Tomball. I was going into the local supermarket (H-E-B for those of you in the same state), and this guy was in the thickest coat I've ever seen (think George Costanza's fabled Gortex coat). On top of that, he was doubled over to keep his stomach warm, which was in stark contrast to my blue jeans and t-shirt. :p

I just start shivering below 70 degrees. I think I'm naturally colder than most people. I've taken my temperature when I've felt really warm, only to find that my temperature was around 96 degrees. Right now, I'm at about 96.6 degrees. I've been called cold-blooded because of that.
Plus, I have practically no insulation. I'm just skin and bones (and other internal organs, too, I guess)
The strange thing is that the colleges around here start in September or at the very end of August. It's just the elementary, middle, and high schools that start earlier.

I've gotten used to not having a summer break. I did spent 4 years in the Army, one of which in Iraq. Summer classes are pretty easy compared to all that. Also, I do get 3 weeks off, which is about 2 weeks longer than my vacation tolerance anyway.

my kids do school year round, but we homeschool, so it's 3 months on, one month off...ect. We are out April (which is helpful since I do taxes) July( which is when we go on vacation) and December (for the holidays)
The local schools start anywhere from Aug 7th to the 17th, but most don't get out until mid-June because of the multitude of "holidays" that the school districts let them out for.
Classes at OSU start on Sept. 21.

Well, I noticed that you were taking quite a few AP courses. Hmmmm.... have you considered Chemical Engineering? I think it might be tougher but I think they make more money upon graduation. I'll post stuff from the bureau of labor statistics.
"According to an ACS survey of recent graduates, inexperienced chemistry graduates with a bachelor’s degree earned a median starting salary of $32,500 in October 2004"
"The following tabulation shows average starting salary offers for engineers, according to a 2005 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers...... Chemical 53,813(for bachelors degrees)" The parentheses are mine, I just didn't want to copy the entire table.
Anyway, I'll just post the links for the information on engineering and chemists from the bureau for you to look at.

Thanks for the information! It's really helpful. I'm actually planning to do graduate work after I get a bachelor's degree. Maybe I'll even go for a PhD. I've thoght about chemical engineering a little bit, but I really enjoy chemistry. I had about a 102% in Chemistry Honors last year, and I really enjoyed the class.
But what I really want to do is become a nanoscientist, and I'm really not sure what to major in to become one. From what I understand it's pretty much a very interdisciplinary field. So maybe I should start out generally and specialize more in graduate school? I'm really not sure. I just really want to be some sort of scientist.

Hmm.... nanoscientist? Well, I think that the best major for that would be like Materials Science or Materials Engineer as they specialize with creating new materials through messing around with the atoms and they take many physics and chemistry courses, however, both of those are not found at most schools but anything that involves both physics and chemistry is good. You can get into nanotechnology with chemistry or chemical engineering or physics and probably a few other fields, I am not an expert on this subject. Chemical engineering is a form of chemistry though that focuses more on commercial applications of chemical reactions but it is more complicated. I really don't know the best way to get into nanotech, there are some companies that are interested to be certain and some colleges with nanotechnology labs.

My law school was a bit...odd, and had a rotating quarter system in which you took 11 weeks of class, followed by 11 weeks of internship, etc etc for 2 years, after the first year.
I was in class in the summer, and, absent a few small breaks here and there, was in school for nearly an entire calender year from 1st to 2nd year.

HAHA! Your football team is in the midst of the biggest scandle since Maurice Clarett. Hope you enjoy life as a sooner. Good luck at school :)
way to overblow the "scandle" btw there is none, a player on his own screwed up broke the rules, and got kicked off the team, no big "scandle"

Actually it was two and yes...it is a good one. Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar and sophomore guard J.D. Quinn will not play for the Sooners this season. The school said the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."
As I said..it is a good one. :D

I'm actually right past the Brighton line in Allston/Brighton, so if you're IN Allston, you're probably closer, depending on how deep in Allston and how far you are from the T.

Actually, I like winter. Everyone is packed into those moving sardine cans they call busses, so no one is walking. No one exept me. It can be really peaceful. As long as you like cold. Which I do.

Around here school starts August 28th this year. We got out June 9th. I have to go to school on the 23rd for "Freshman Orientation" though. There's only one high school in my county, therefore it's the only school that does that. The 2 middle schools have orientations too, but at night instead of the whole day. The 7 elementary school only have kindergarten orientations... and every school starts on the 28th.

I'm up directly between BU and BC...half hour walk onto campus, and sadly, the T takes about equally as long

Back in the Palaeolithic Era, when I was a kid, school started on the Thursday after Labor Day (the Thursday after the 1st Monday in September for folks not from the US). Starting earlier is just wrong! :( And all this staggering of start times is confusing, those poor kids, those poor mothers, trying to figure out when to report.

I'm doing summer classes right now. Fall semester at University of Maine starts right after Labor Day (1st week of Sept., for those outside the U.S.). I'll hardly get any vacation time, unlike last year when I was able to go to Disney World for two weeks.
Term starts on the 31st of September for me. Mind you, I am currently employed until the 9th, which means I get about 3 weeks of a summer vacation. Woot. ='(

Yes. It's a special day that only people who study advanced temporal mechanics get to use.

I did mean the 30th. The fact that the last day in September was actually said date was beyond the reach of my poor overworked mind.

Bomar is the big story around here, JD was just about useless so we don't talk about him, and it's not a "team scandal" it's a 2 idiots and a car lot scandal.
*is way too overprotective of her Sooners*
There have been huge team scandals with other teams, involving many more players.....you might check out Texas A&M's (http://www.tulsaworld.com/SportsStory.asp?ID=060803_Sp_B6_Aggie2619) history...really in comparison this isn't that "good" of a scandal, it's just more recent.

Hmm, I had to go re-check what classes I have this fall. I'd forgotten.
I changed majors last year from History to French, so I've got a couple of general education classes to finish up. After this semester I'll be done with that crap.
FRN 315 Advanced French I
FRN 320 France Today
ANT 368 Hispanic Cultures in the US
GEL 105 Environmental Geology (Yes, I'm a lazy bitch)
REL 334 Death and Dying
In the spring I'll be going to France for the semester, so I'll get caught up on my French things.
