Beowulf the movie
Beowulf by Seamus Heaney is one of the best books I have ever read. I'm kinda of scared to see it turn into a movie. However the cast seems too much. Here look:
Sharisse Baker-Bernard .... Hild
Richard Burns .... Sentry Guard/Unferth Guard
Chris Coppola .... Olaf
Shay Duffin
Greg Ellis .... Garmund
Brendan Gleeson
Crispin Glover .... Grendel
Leslie Harter Zemeckis .... Yrsa
Anthony Hopkins .... King Hrothgar
Nick Jameson .... Drehgbearn
Emily Johnson .... Maiden #12
Angelina Jolie .... Grendel's Mother (voice)
Dominic Keating .... Old Cain
John Littlefield .... Thane #23
Alison Lohman .... (voice)
Chris Mala .... Thane #5
John Malkovich .... Unferth
Alan Ritchson .... Animated Image/Beowulf
Sebastian Roché .... Wulfgar
Charlotte Salt .... Estrith
Woody Schultz .... Hengest
Randy Shelly .... Boy
Tyler Steelman .... Young Cain
Nadine Stenovitch .... Ensemble
Aaron Stephens .... Beowulf physique
Tim Trobec .... Thane #1
Jared Weber .... Thane #3
Tom West .... Thane #44
Ray Winstone .... Beowulf
Robin Wright Penn .... Queen Wealhtheow
Rik Young .... Eofor
Seems like to much. If it were my movie I would only have
Beowulf (old and young)
King Hrothgar
Unferth
Brecca
Queen Welthow
Grendel
Grendel's mother
Wiglaf
and some various warriors
who would fills these roles I dunno but I would take any advice or idea you guys have to make sure it would be a true fan favorite movie!
You do know that Seamus Heaney* didn't actually write the Beowulf story?
*Another Belfast man...

What?
Beowulf the movie was horrible. 13th Warrior came much closer to the original.

That sounds like a great story to make a movie of. If it's as good as the movie version of Homer's "The Oddessy" (I loved it), I'll see Beowulf.

My Englsih teacher had everyone do Beowulf movie posters or comic books. me and my friend did a comic book using Ragnarok Online characters, it was leet and should be a movie.

What if they get Triple H to play Beowulf and someone like The Big Show to play Grendel? That would be funny! :D

13th Warrior was based on the Michael Crichton novel "Eaters of the Dead".

Movie version of the odyssey? Do you mean Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
13th Warrior was based on the Michael Crichton novel "Eaters of the Dead".Which in turn is based on the Beowulf legend. ;)

13th Warrior was based on the Michael Crichton novel "Eaters of the Dead".
"Eater's of the Dead" was Crichton's re-telling of Beowulf.

I still can't understand how that movie was funny. I laughed only once in the entire movie, at the very beginning, when they fall off the train.

It insisted on itself, so people liked it because they're stupid.

No, I mean the 1997 made for TV movie The Odyssey, with Armand Assante playing Odysseus.

The one that took like 3 days and was frickin' awesome.

Oh yah? I don't remember any Arabs in Beowulf ... but it's been a while.
Huh ... well ok then.

I don't think so. There is another one that is actually the odyssey, and is a very good movie, even though its about 4 hours long, If I remember right.

"Eater's of the Dead" was Crichton's re-telling of Beowulf.
that doesn't make it the Beowulf legend as in the one written down. Hell, Grendel by John Gardner is based on Beowulf, but is totally different.
Too many levels of removal to be true to Beowulf itself (ie Oral tradition, Old English written version, translation, Eaters of the Dead, 13th Warrior)
Is'nt there already a semi-old movie of beowulf?

I think so, but wasn't it more of a "movie of the week" thing, rather than a theatrical release? I could be wrong about that of course....
There's been about two already, one taken place in the future like Dracula 3000, and another one that wasn't that big of a hit, it was also a cartoon serie for a short time. I hope they make it good and use people who wold do the role justice....I just dunno who would be good for what role

IMDB lists three movies called 'Beowulf"
1999 = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120604/
2007 = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0442933/
1998 (Animated short) = http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0270854/
So unless 1999 counts as semi-old, or it was called something else, I don't think there is an old version. (Perhaps 1999 counts as old to you - it doesn't to me.)

Between that and the fact that Neil Gaiman's writing it, I'm excited.

Never said it was good material for a Beowulf movie, just making the connection. I am looking forward to this one, but I'd still like to see one with all the mythological pieces in place. Magic swords, raging monsters, the whole shabang.
yes but isn't grenel and his mother both monster who don't speak?
Cannot think of a name

I had some friends who did a video of Gilgimesh that included a pose down between Gil (He-Man) and Enkidu (Beastman) done to Pink Floyd's One of These Days.

I've read the story of Beowulf, and I definitely remember Grendel speaking. I'm not sure about the mother, but I think she does too.

just wonder what verisons did you two read because I read Seamus Heaney and I really don't remember speech, some emotions but not speech, do you know what they said?

You want to see this version, a very very very good version IMHO...
http://www.beowulf-movie.com/
It was made in Iceland. The swords and armour made by JT Palikko from Finland and are bloody awesome.
I have to be honest I wrote this thread so I could get somebody to help me with my Beowulf project, but I really did get into it, Beowulf would make a great movie.
