In Memoriam...

About two or three hours ago, I had a car accident. As some of you might know, I deliver Pizzas for a living.

So, at about 5:45 pm, I was sitting in the car on the side of the road, looking whether a house on the other side was the one. I saw some lights in the mirror, assuming it would drive around me. My lights were on, and I was standing on the brakes.

Well, whatever her reasons, she didn't stop, but crash right into my car. It's probably totalled, I might have pictures tomorrow. I've probably got a little whiplash (chances are I'll be feeling it tomorrow though), but other than that everyone's fine.

But not my little Golf. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/traurig/sad-smiley-036.gif

My condolences.

Im a pizza driver too.

I can tell you that if that had happened to me..I would be ruined.
My insurance wouldnt cover the full cost of the repairs, and I would be out of a job.

I hope your all right.

Did you get checked out by a doctor, or anything?

Yeah, it's a bitch. I might work something out with my manager to make dough and stuff, but I'll be missing out on a lot of income for a while. But she's cool, when I called her, she actually drove out to see. She'll get my shifts covered, I'll talk to her tomorrow about where we go from here. :(

Her insurance will pay it, we've got a signed statement that it was her fault. All the better, because my insurance isn't too flash...

Bad luck, old chap!
Was she insured? That should replace your car, at least.

Sounds like you need different insurance :s
Surely, though, in this case it was the other driver's fault? Doesn't that mean that their insurance covers your damage, or is that just in the UK?

I had a prang before Christmas, and as it was my fault my insurance paid (presumably - gave all the correct details but never heard any more of it) for their repairs. I flogged my car on ebay for spares, as it really wasn't worth repairing.

Nope.

In my state, we have a "No-Fault" insurance laws.
They only pay anything under a certain amount, and in a case of my "PL/PD" coverage, If my car were totalled, I'd get about 450 dollars.
Thats it, unless I could sue the person who hit me.

Now, If I wanted to pay a LOT more per month...for Full Coverage...

Hold up!

Checking with my very wise and worldy mother, she says that the deductible (about 450) is the amount that the insurance will cover anything beyond.

So...say I got hit, and my car was totalled, they would pay the Kelly Blue-Book price (the estimated worth) of my vehicle.

anything UNDER 450 is my bill to foot.

As I said, we'll sort it out tomorrow, I guess. Yeah, definitely check for that!!! Seriously, here you either get an amount of money for every day you are without a car because of the accident (Nutzungsausfall) or you let the autoshop give you a replacement for the time (i.e. what I meant by "rental car" above).
Completely paid for by the insurance of the one causing the accident.

I mean, think about it - there are many people like you who need their car every day to even be able to do their jobs, you can't just go and crash their car and then expect them to pay their way through the time it takes to get fixed (or buy a new one ASAP). There'd be way too many people who'd have no way of being able to afford that!

It took me a while to understand and accept her for what she does. But I finally did about three months ago, and since then I have really enjoyed our time together.

When my dad got in and dragged her crippled rear (one tire is like 90° turned) up the grass on the side of the road, I almost cried.

Glad you're okay, sorry about your car.

I'd be devastated, because, as BackwoodsSquatches said, insurance only pays the market value of the car, and right now, my car has more owed on it than its market value.

So she's a female, huh? How'd you know?I guess he's saying that she gives him rides and that he wouldn't accept rides from a male?

Don't know how it works over there, but in the US, you can also claim lost wages as part of the insurance settlement (though it usually requires a lawyer to get it, and the lawyer winds up with a third of the settlement as a fee).

I wish. :p

Well, the Summer before we left Germany, I worked at my dad's firm for three months. I made a fair bit of money, but since we needed every cent for the big move, I agreed to hand it over to my parents to help out, to get it back later.

So after a while here in Oz, we needed a second car, and since I was about to get my license, I was consulted. Unfortunately, this was a few months before my love for cars began (I'm a bit weird like that, a NFS game started it ;) ), and the best idea I could come up with was a Golf.

So we got this one, and the money that they still owed me made up a bit more than a third of the price. So we shared it. I failed two driving tests in it, then passed the third. Whenever I got a bit of money, I used it to buy a bit more of it.

Now, since I've been making decent money with the Pizza deliveries, it's virtually all mine (although I'm not sure). So the good thing is that strictly speaking, all the insurance payout should go to me. The bad thing is that due to my family's financial situation, I have my doubts on what sort of car I'll be able to get as a replacement. I mean, I have a bit of money stashed away in a few shares (my grandma's gift to me), but I wanted to keep it for when I graduate and need to start a life somewhere. :(

When I was younger, I had a Jetta that I really liked.

It died the same way (except that I was sitting at a stop light, and a guy in a 1976 Buick LeSabre hit me from behind at about 100 kph).

Miraculously, I was not harmed, but the back of the car was butterflied like a fried shrimp.

I've had a soft spot in my heart for VWs ever since. And despite the fact that I can afford more expensive cars, I drive a Passat, simply because it's a VW.

I'm glad to hear you are alright so far, but would strongly advise you go get a full check up from a doctor. You may just be incredibly sore now and for a few days, but there is the possibilty you could have whiplash, pinched nerves, etc.
Its expected you get a medical checkup right away. You dont want to have to justify yourself down the road when someone accuses you of faking it.

I hope your insurance-or hers- will cover a suitable replacement of your car. And as I think Nazz brought up, there should be some type of lost wages compensation for you.

I'm not a litigious person, but you should be restored back to the condition you were in prior to the accident. That is-capable and free of pain and a car tha thas the same value as the one that was destroyed.

You shouldnt settle for any less.

Best wishes to you.

Its a miracle you werent killed. I hit a pole dead on at 25 miles per hour and shouldnt have survived.

I worked for VW for a year and had a Jetta GTI as a company car for a while. It was a 5 speed, loved the way it shifted and handled.
The trunk was huge and you could put the rear armrest down to put skis, etc through. The Blaupunt stereo was excellent too.

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

[Now] Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.

The impact threw me and the Jetta about 75 meters across a major intersection (missed everyone) and up into a parking lot. The car seemed to have absorbed most of the impact - I was still belted in and aside from some stiffness, unharmed.

Half of the Jetta was opened like someone put a firecracker in a beer can.

Yeah-that is impressive. If I remember right-the engine was mounted so it would break its mounts and go out under the car instead of into the passenger compartment in a significant crash.

Not many vehicles could protect the passengers with a direct hit by any car made in the US in 1976.

Okay, I got some pictures. Now, it's nowhere near as horrific as DK's crash was. Not sure how fast she was going, but I guess I can be glad that she wasn't any faster. But the angle was enough to bend the frame (or so it seems, the doors don't close properly anymore). And the rear axle is history.
We don't have a full consensus yet on whether repair is possible, but if it is, we've been told we're looking at at least A$9000.

Hope that you are okay!!

Neo, what state are you in? I might be able to lend you my Benz, because I can't be trusted to drive because...I...may or may not have tried to drive without a licence and with a massive blood alcohol level, and such.

:p Lol, I wouldn't even have noticed that - did you bring it from Germany, Neu Leonstein? I did see the "D" sticker and had to smile. ;)

And aww, its little hind wheel is all broken. :(

Ouch. Well, at least it wasn't the front - at any rate you can probably cut some of your losses by salvaging the engine, right?

all this reminds me of a time some uncle offered us a 9 years old mazdza323 a couple years ago.. the Door was smashed but closed tigth.. we did not want to pay $900 for the cosmetic repair.. we though of it it as a third emergency car...

putting just Gas and Oil.. we though it was going to last ~3 months.. eventually we started to use it more and more.. we figured it was cheaper to drive.. Gas was cheaper, one-way-insurance was cheaper, and no repairs!!.

It lasted 2 years.
So when it was time to send it for recycling.. Me and my dad we did an official 5 min ceremony in his honor.. with a full one minute of silince.. rigth hand to the hearth.

Go to a doctor or chiropractor for the whip lash, don't go to work until the doctor says OK, and get a lawyer but only if the person that hit you has insurance or a damn good job. Let's see; personal injury, pain and suffering, and loss of income...

I did see the "D" sticker and had to smile. ;)

Those are actually semi-popular with kids where I live, for whatever reason. I see a number of cars with D stickers, and I'm absolutely certain few, if any of them have even been to Germany. I've even seen a couple "CH" stickers. I've been meaning to order a magnet sheet so I can put one of these on and cut it out so I don't actually stick it to the car.

Full coverage in Michigan isn't that much more expensive. I pay $110/month for full coverage on my 1999 MX-5, and I'm only 23 years old (I turn 24 tomorrow!).

Now, if you want ridiculous insurance, go to Colorado. For a 2002 Mini Cooper I had they wanted me to pay about $550/month for full coverage. I told them to go to hell and drove it home to Michigan to get it licensed and insured for $220/month.

Neo, what state are you in?
I'm in Bellbowrie in the Western Suburbs (you know, down Mogill Road from Coronation Drive over Taringa, Indooroopilly, Chapel Hill and Kenmore).

But I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable driving a borrowed Benz...

:p Lol, I wouldn't even have noticed that - did you bring it from Germany, Neu Leonstein? I did see the "D" sticker and had to smile. ;)
Naw, we got the car here. It's right-hand drive, like all the cars here (and since I learned on those, I'd probably have to change my habits when I go to Germany...).

But we got the sticker in Germany. :p

Ouch. Well, at least it wasn't the front - at any rate you can probably cut some of your losses by salvaging the engine, right?
Yeah. It's still pending a final confirmation mechanically, as well as figuring out how the insurance will handle it after that...but the front is fine, as is most of the interior and the stereo.
