I weep for humanity

This was published as a letter to the editor in today's version of the Boston Metro, the Boston free daily. I can't even begin to point out the problem with this piece, but I thought I should show everyone, and let it stand for itself:

Why renew any race’s right to vote?

Why are Americans so satisfied that the House has passed a bill to approve a 25-year extension of expiring provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965? In a country that calls itself “The Land of the Free,” why do black Americans need to renew their right to vote in the United States. Why put black people in another 25- year probation? Do Americans of other races need to renew their civil rights every so often or is it because black Americans were forced in this land as opposed to migrating on their free will? What happens 25 years later? Do black people get evaluated hoping to get another extension or do we hope that by then, the House, the Senate and Americans in general will be more evolved and find this principle ridiculous? It is outrageous that we all speak about racism and still manage to treat our own, and even ourselves as inferiors. Black Americans are just Americans. Promoting a rule that only exists for Americans of darker skin is very sad.

Something is very sad indeed...mainly the state of education in history and law.

You should see some of the ignorant, inarticulate crap that graces the page of my local paper's Letters to the Editor.

What, you really weep for that? Are you blind? This is amazingly intellectual, I mean, nevermind that the right for blacks to vote is in the actual constitution(15th amendment), it is still smarter than the majority of people. I don't think most people even know about the voting rights act. In fact, really, most people don't actually know what is in the damn constitution, they might get the 1st or 2nd amendment because those are the big ones but they forget about the rest. I really don't get what you are weeping for, people are idiots and that is life.
I agree with the holy awesomeness of Holyawesomeness.

The primary reason I find this troublesome is that the law DOES NOT DO what the author thinks it does. In other words the entire point for this editorial was...wrong. This righteous indignation was aimed at a law that DOES NOT EXIST.

What kills me is that someone had enough vigor to go ahead and write to a newspaper to express a view that is absolutly, factually, wrong.

And in Russia, Putin collapsed in a drunken stupor after a night of vodka binging. All is well with the world.

Point is, crap like this happens all the time. It's due to letters to the editor like this that I avoid most newspapers entirely. I only read the Denver Post when I have no other reading material. (And I only choose the Post because the Rocky Mountain News has disgustingly awful material in it, like random stories about the number of Jews working for Walmart.)

Yes, I know it does not do what he thought it did. After all, it is guaranteed by the 15th amendment, not by that law. That law applies to poll taxes and literacy tests. However, it was still rather well written, I mean, if you just look around there are all sorts of idiotic things out there. In fact, I think this dude was probably just one of many people to say the same thing. I am shocked that you are shocked to be honest, learning that most people are morons is something that most people do in high school. To figure it out so late is odd. Are you sure you aren't a bit slow?:D

I was going to say what the heck law they were complaining about. Probably something they got through a chain email, then.

Reading this thread title made me think of the poem Dover Beach, by Matt Arnold.

It's sad, though, about this nonsense. I guess people have learned a little (they reissued the law), but not enough (they thought they actually had to reissue it).

I actually support the extension of the act, but that's neither here nor there.

What just really amuses me is how much righteous indignation got stirred up over an issue that the author apparently....made up.
