Why you shouldn't carry a .25

Some dude was looking at his little .25 caliber pistol when it went off and shot him in the head. Police responding to the scene said his injuries weren't life threatening. Imagine, shot less than arm's length from your skull, and it still won't kill you. Maybe we should stop listing .25 caliber weapons as firearms and start selling them at Toys R Us. Kids could have loads of fun shooting them at each other.

Honestly unless you get shot in the neck or eye a .25 or .22 isn't going to kill you. I don't even think it's got enough power to get to your heart.

I used to own a 25 auto. It was a fun toy but useless as much of anything other than a noise maker.

A 22 can, on occasion, penetrate as much as 5 or 6 inches into the body, depending on the bullet type (lead round nose is better than hollowpoint at penetrating), and can bounce off the skull or ride the skull under the skin.

Plenty of people have been killed by them, but if you're not hit in a vital artery or brain, and can get to a hospital, you're probably not going to die.

A 25 usually has slightly poorer penetration, because it has roughly the same energy but a slightly greater diameter.

If someone shot me with a 25, and I found out about it, I would kick their ass.

A .22 or .25 will kill you if it gets into your toraxic box. Not immediately, but nastily, after bouncing around and making pulp of your organs.

Unless it was a headshot, in which you'd be totally spasticated and barely able to crawl over to a phone, dial 911 and maybe manage to moan or whisper.

It's not going to be any nicer than a solid strike with a claw hammer.

Well, the guy in the news story was ok after shooting himself in the head from less than arm's length away.

I have a friend who was shot with 9mm FMJ in the head from about 6 feet away, and the bullet hit the back of his skull, penetrated the skin, and then rode along under the skin inside his helmet up to his forehead and exited.

He then turned around and shot the guy who shot him. He said the guy looked extremely surprised.

Bullets can sometimes fail to be the magic wand you want them to be.

why should you want to necessarily kill someone tho? if it's powerful enough to cause serious injury it's powerful enough to effectively stop most attackers unless they're really fat or muscley.

So a single .25 to the head fails to kill someone?

Eh, still better then nothing, I say.

I'd rather be able to put six rounds of .25 into someone's face then have to get into a fistfight with a knife armed mugger.

Uhm... This is why you shouldn't carry a .25? Because if you have an accident it won't kill you?
You think the dude switched to something heavier after he accidentally shot himself in the head and didn't spray the furniture with his brains?

I guess it's just natural-selection at work. If you read about someones corpse looking like it was put through a meat-grinder after accidentally tripping over the latest lazer-sighted, fully automatic armor-piercing american penis-extension and the first thing you think as you read that is "damn, I need to get me one of those", then you're pretty dumb.

Not very bright.

Most attackers do not stop because they are seriously injured.

Attackers fall into two categories.

1. People who are deterred by the mere presence of the firearm. This is most people, and this works very well when they are deterred.

2. People who want to hurt you. The latest research shows that unless you hit someone with a weapon that can penetrate at least 12 to 14 inches (deep enough to reach vital organs from any angle) and can hit that person in either the neural motor strips (side of the head just above the ears) or the cerebellum or upper spinal cord (above the sixth cervical vertebra) ANY person can keep attacking, and if they were attacking you to begin with, they will continue. While other wounds may result in death, the person will live long enough to cause lethal injury to you, even if they are armed only with something like a small knife.

Probably be more effective to beat the guy with the .25.

well i don't know about you but if something penetrated 12 to 14 inches from the front or back of my abdomen it'd probably come out the other side. not entirely sure how thick i am but i'm pretty sure most of my internal organs are within 6 inches of my skin.

Depends on the angle.

If you're standing with your side to me, your chest is covered by arm, rib bones, etc., before the bullet ever gets to your vital organs.

FBI research.

Of course, I prefer a weapon that goes through someone, no matter what angle they are, or what car they're sitting in, or what wall they're hiding behind.

I am somewhat out of date on this, but the best round to use for self defence is a 357 magnum firing a 125 grain JHP bullet at 1400 fps. In studies it has been shown to produce a one shot stop some 90+ % of the time. It is still not a good idea to bet your life on one shot though.
