*Official* NFL 2006 SEASON MONSTER THREAD!!!
Well, NFL teams are now in training camp across this great country in 100+ degree heat. Who wins it all this year?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say my Chicago Bears win it. I mean they have the best D in football. Their O was bad because they had Kyle Orton (3rd string QB) starting all year. With a healthy Grossman and Griese as #2, the offense should be good. The Bears also have 2 very good half-backs and some good recievers in Mohammed and Barrien.
BEAR DOWN! CHICAGO BEAR!

I will say the same pick I pick every year and that Pick is the Denver Broncos. They made it all the way to the AFC Title Game last year and if it were not for bad defense in that game, they could very well have won it and the Super Bowl. Look for Denver to make another run at the Super Bowl.
As to another pick, watch out for the the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers. They come from out of nowhere and won the whole thing as a sixth seed. No sixth seeded team has ever won the Super Bowl. Look for them to also make a run for the title.

Broncos - Giants in the Super Bowl. As long as Shanahan doesn't convince himself that he invented football, that is, and overthink the second half of the season. As for the Giants, that's just old, undying fan-ness. I wandered in the wilderness with them for so many years, even though I now live here in Broncoidland, I can't give them up. Of course, if it did come down to Denver v New York ... I could root for whichever team had the ball!

If it was Denver-Giants Super Bowl, you can not lose. You would be in a win-win situation just like I was with the Pittsburgh-Denver AFC Title match up. They are my two favorite teams in the league and when they met, I could not lose for one of them would be in the Super Bowl.
I did root for Denver in the game and was disappointed that they lost but was not upset about it.

I'm going to say it'll be a Jacksonville-Chicago Superbowl. Offense wins games, defence wins championships.

Well remember that with 4 divisions, the 6th seed team is better than past ones as there are only 2 WC spots instead of 3.
I'll go with my pick last year--Seahawks.

One thing about Pittsburgh that I have learned, they may lose people but they always have excellent backups to replace the ones they have lost.

My full predictions (as if you care, right?)
AFC East
New England has become the model of salary cap management, and unless the injury bug bites them something fierce, they will stay in their position atop the East.
AFC North
Pittsburgh has lost a lot of depth in the offseason. And we have to see how Big Ben's injury effects his performance. That being said, even their coach admitted they were not the best team last year, they just peaked at the right time. The AFC West and South are too strong this year for two teams to come out of the Steeler's division- so they will have to hope Carson Palmer's injury keeps him limited and Ben comes back quickly for them to take the division crown.
AFC West
By far the most competitive division this year. With the exception of Oakland, each team here is a legitimate playoff contender. SD's Rivers isn't a true rookie, and they let Brees go for a reason. With LT and the league's best pass catching TE, I think the Charger's take the West. I'm going to have to pick Denver to take the first wild card because of their perennial almost-illegal run blocking- which will win close games down the stretch. Kansas City's D is still too suspect.
AFC South
This division comes down to one thing- can Jacksonville's offense score? They have lots of talent, but have not been able to consistantly produce. If they can, they are making a run all the way to the Superbowl. Even with their jeckal and hyde offense, they were still the only team to beat BOTH Superbowl participants last year. If they stay inconsistant, then their ferocious D will still carry them to the playoffs. Indy has dropped off a lot with no Edge, but they are still potent enough to claim the second wildcard, or take the South if J-ville struggles.
NFC East
The most competitive division in the NFC. But, as always, the Redskins are WAY overrated. They'll struggle to go 8-8. Dallas has a tough D, a consistant passer in Bledsoe, and have upgraded their inconsistant offense with arguably the most talented receiver in the game. If TO can be kept in line, Dallas takes the division. The Giants take the first wild card in the NFC- although improved- Barber isn't getting any younger, and Eli has to shake off his inconsistant arm.
NFC North
Da Bears. I have said it before- offense wins games, but defense wins championships. Being the only team in the division with a prayer helps to keep you healthy too.
NFC West
Seattle rode Alexander's legs all the way to the Superbowl last year, then forgot to use him in the big game. Although still one of the best backs in football, the weakening of their line will keep Alexander from duplicating his record season. Also, he has had a shitload of carries the last few years- he is durable, but I see a potential injury this year. Seattle still has the firepower to get the second wild card spot. This years suprise- the Arizona Cardinals. They have the best passing attack in the league, and Edge is a significant upgrade to the running game. They still have questions, but if Warner can stay healthy they could unseat Seattle in the division.
NFC South
Carolina has developed a consistantly competitive program. I expect that to continue, and for them to come on top of a close division with talent all around, but no elite teams.

Pittsburgh has lost a lot of depth in the offseason. And we have to see how Big Ben's injury effects his performance.
You mean that motorcycle accident? Hehe. I do not think that it will affect him to much.
AFC West
I think the Charger's take the West.
Doubtful they will. They will have a difficult time with Kansas City and with Denver. They will probably go 0-4 when they face these two teams.
I'm going to have to pick Denver to take the first wild card because of their perennial almost-illegal run blocking- which will win close games down the stretch.
Its all legal blocking allcoolnamesaretaken. And because of their level of play, will take the AFC West for the second straight year. :D
Kansas City's D is still too suspect.
Here I will agree with you 100%

I think the will split with Denver- and I think Denver and SD will both beat KC twice. Crummy defense, and LJ is SOOOOO overrated right now.

It may be, but it is a hazy area, and ALMOST illegal. The player's association has been petitioning for it to be banned for years. There is a reason you can put ANYONE in the backfiend in Denver and they'll get 1000 yards. And all the defensive injuries sustained against the Denver O-line are a tell tale sign their blocking scheme is dangerous. ONLY a Denver fan would defend it.
Its a new season and hope springs eternal in a new season. Mostly.
In the case of the two teams that I have always rooted for it'll be a miracle if either makes the playoffs. Raiders and Saints. It's still all good though. I love football even when my teams suck. There's always miracles to hope for and Collegiate football is even better to watch when your pro team is in the hunt for first pick in the next years draft.

Oh please. It is football. Anybody can get hurt. Why do you think we have all those rules in regards to the quarterback and to the kickers? As to Denver's backfield, here I thought it was to the brillence of Gary Kubiack who has now taken up the reins of the Texans. Also have to remember that Denver's O-line is also smaller than most of the league and also more agile. You know the old saying, the bigger they are the harder they fall. :D

Last year's finishes tend to mean jack-squat for an upcoming season, but let's see what we have here.
AFC East - I think we can safely say the jets and Bills won't win anything. The Jets have too many mediocre quarterbacks, and the Bills bet on...J.P. Losman? Who? Seriously. Give the nod to the Patriots, since the Dolphins are my team and they never win anything.
AFC North - So the Ravens have stuff expected from them. That's great; there are two other good teams here, and they have to compete with the crash-resistant Ben Roethlisberger and the reconstructed knee of Carson Palmer. I'll give it to Pittsburgh, but the pressure's on...OK, I take it back. After the wreck and the loss of two important guys, it's Cincinnati's division to lose.
AFC South - I can write the Texans off again. Seriously, next time, take Reggie Bush. He isn't a franchise player right now, but he's the best player there, and the offense needs all the help it can get. At least pick an O-line guy or something. Sheeeeeeesh. Seriously, though, the Titans have a long road ahead and the Jaguars are a shoo-in...for the wild card when Indy goes 14-2 again.
AFC West - Well, count the Raiders out. Art Shell is no magician, and who's playing QB again? Kerry Collins? Come on. he had one good year with the Giants and that's it. I still have to go with Denver again with the Chiefs taking the wild card.
NFC East - Don't tell me you actually believe that horse-hockey about the Redskins going all the way. No team managed by Daniel Snyder is going anywhere...I'll give them the division, but they're not the best team in the NFC. Also, T.O.'s more trouble than he's worth and will actually wreck two teams this year - his new team and his old team (not his really old team; they're doing enough to wreck themselves.)
NFC North - Answer: Three nobodies and a guy who can pass to himself. Question: Who the hell's playing QB for the Vikings, anyway? The Bears have a few options at QB themselves...bothing to write home about, but if Rex Grossman stays healthy, the rest of the division doesn't stand a chance. That said, Grossman could be kidnapped by space aliens and the rest of the division wouldn't have a chance.
NFC South - Just so we're clear, the Saints aren't still sentimental favorites, are they? They did take Reggie Bush, which helps. Drew Brees better pan out, though, or it's another long year for the Saints. Playing the Bucs, Falcons, and Panthers more than anyone else should make that true as well. I'll give it to Carolina.
NFC West - No Super Bowl runner-up has come back the next season to do anything since...uhh, I think the Packers in 1998. So history tells us that the Seahawks are done for. Someone will have to unseat them. Any volunteers? Yeah, that's cute, Arizona. You have a real running back now. And you drafted Matt Leinart. Call us back in a few years. Maybe you can get to 8-8. But seriously, 13-3 may not be in the cards, but who's going to stop Seattle? Who, I ask?
Playoffs? Well, at this rate, the Pats, Bengals, Colts, Broncos, Jaguars, and Chiefs come from the AFC, while the Redskins, Bears, Panthers, Seahawks...umm, and the Buccaneers...umm, and also the Giants come from the NFC. Yes, I picked 11 teams that made the playoffs last year and one that almost did. I have no reason to believe differently.
In the AFC, the Colts and Broncos get byes while the Pats and Chiefs survive the first round. I'll take the Pats and Broncos for the AFC title game.
For the NFC, the Redskins and Panthers get first-round byes while the Bears and Bucs get out of the first round. I'll put the Panthers and Bucs in the NFC title game.
For your Super Bowl...gimme Carolina 24, New England 14 with martin Gramatica booting a crucial game-tying field goal with a minute left that's returned for a TD.

*chuckles* Apparently Pittsburgh does the samething. I am sure that most of the league's offensive line does it. Shanahan, in turn, took Denver reporters to a projection room where he showed them tape of Steelers linemen doing the same thing.
So why single out Denver when Pittsburgh does it as well? As I said, I bet if film is looked at, most of the linemen across the league doe it.

Brad Johnson. He's what now, 40? Here's my prediction for the Vikings (my team, god help me). They traded away their best receiver and now their QB. The Vikings will never win another game again. Ever.

That's who I meant by "guy who can pass to himself." He's 37, according to ESPN, and if he gets hurt, write off the Vikings. I can't be too displeased; my team plucked your team's old QB.

Yeah, I forgot he did that. Well, at least Minnesota will make the record books -- as the first team to go 0-16. When they do it again next year, they'll set a new record for most consecutive losses. I already have written them off.
