Of course not. There have been far too many really excellent games over the past 30 years to expect that.

There's no question the game will be really freaking cool, and its lessons in procedurally generated content may have ramifications for the software industry for decades to come, but we need to see how engaging the game is over time.

A really excellent game, to me, has to make me want to play it for hundreds of hours (like the classic RPGs and turn-based strategy games of the '80s and '90s). I'm not sure Spore is going to hold my attention that long.

seconded it looks fun to play the first time but I doubt it will be particularly engaging especially once your race of lizard (I doubt there will be hair in the game) people go into endless peace and your left tediously picking up creatures on other planets to add to your catalogue

That said, I did play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri start to finish a bunch of times. So maybe I'll just start over again as a single-celled organism and build something completely different.

Possibly. I've heard many games talked up in the development stage only for features to be dropped as the release deadline looms. Fable comes to mind.

I cannot wait for it to come out - though by the looks of things, I'll have to force myself to do so. I've watched the promotional videos, read everything I can about it - it looks amazing. My boyfriend summed up both his and my thoughts about it quite accurately once: "I need to get everything I want to do in my life done before the release of Spore, for I fear that after that I shall never leave my computer again".

As I've said afore, Spore looks like too much work for no reward and only an enjoyment contrived from the process of doing the work itself. If it was properly multiplayer then it would be awesome, but it's not really. It's sitting in your room designing creatures for no other purpose than to design creatures. If you happen to like that, then woohoo, but I would have thought that to be a relatively niche market.

It's the sort of game that everyone will buy, play for a week straight then forget about.

the Sims? biggest selling PC game of all time?

certainly i can see the similarities...

(but yes, people may well grow tired of the game IF there's little more to it than that. it depends on the extra content and the playability they put in at the end of the day)

Nuts, beat me to it :p

Yeah, there will certainly need to be a little more sense of direction to it for it to be truly great - there's only so much one can gain from extra content.

And while we're on the subject of games that sounded great in development but then sucked big time - Perfect Dark Zero anyone? Blew through that in about 5 hours, and the only thing worthwhile about it can be summed up in a few simple words; dual magnums and the RCP90. The rest can go hang really.

From a business standpoint, they want a game you'll buy, play a bit, and then get bored and stop - because that puts you back in the market for another game.

Sony once openly said that their ideal EverQuest customers were people who played the game for years, but only logged in very occasionally. So they produced revenue, but didn't increase server load.

If it lives up to its potential then yes. But the same was said about Fable, and Oblivion, and STALKER, which isnt even out and has been watered down into a regular FPS.

If just one or 2 games a year were released in the form originally intended then it would be awesome.

I have high hopes for spore, and Bioshock.

Hey B&W was actually a pretty sweet game - the only real problems with it weren't so much to do with gameplay as... well ok maybe there were gameplay, but only insofar as the AI for villagers/creatures wasn't too hot, and for an old game thats really only to be expected.

There is no greatest game ever made, but this one looks to be pretty good.

But if it's anything like The Sims, I'll eat my hat. Seriously, The Sims is the lamest, most overmarketed, overhyped crap to come from Maxis. Then again, I always liked SimAnt and SimEarth.

I honestly think it will be crap.

I've never really been a fan of Will Wright's games anyways (SimCity, The Sims, etc.), but I think this attempt to mush up 6+ games into one big, endless mess will turn out to be an exercise in pretentious boredom. I mean, what's the point? There's no goal, you grow your species to do what, take over the universe? I'd prefer games with at least quasi-solid objectives, and to retain one, maybe two styles of gameplay, not change every week. And I shudder to think at the sheer size of the game (physical hard drive space, as well as system requirements), or the cost, givin the endless hipe.

In short: I think it will be a big, costly, piece of shite.

P.S. No, I don't hate sandbox style games, but most of them have at least some objective, however obscure. Except the Sims, but I hate that game with a passion.

There's a good article on the game in PC Gamer UK this month, one of the journalists goes to Maxis HQ and builds/plays his own creature, Hank (the result of a bet whether he can break the game). It's actually increased my anticipation for the game considerably (but not up to Supreme Commander levels, and Overlord looks brilliant too).

I am saddened and disturbed nobody got my Red Alert reference.
