Your life in pictures! [56k warning]

We have a photography thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=489636) at the moment, for those of you who are interest in taking really pretty pictures.

This thread isn't so much about pretty pictures as it is about pictures that show a bit of your life. I mean, we have so many different people from so many different places on NSG that it would be a shame not to take advantage of this opportunity to take a peek at life around the world, wouldn't it?

So, when I got to borrow a digital camera for a day or two, I decided to take it with me to uni and to take a few snapshots. The result was post #370 in this thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=489636&page=25), which I'll post again here:
Now, I'm not an artist. But the fact that I managed to get my hands on a digital camera today meant that I could take photos of my day!

So if you want to see a glimpse of life in Brisbane, check it out.

Our dogs. The Ridgeback is ours, the little Demon (it's a Labradoodle) is training with us to become an assistance dog for disabled people.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip3small.jpg
This is where I live.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip4small.jpg
That's my car. A long time ago, when we had more money, I was very close to buying a WRX. It was at that time that I said on NSG that I had one...I lied. I'm sorry. :(
It's a 1998 VW Golf with a 1.6l engine. But I still thrash it like a rally car. :D

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip5small.jpg
Suburbia. Ugh.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip6small.jpg
From my suburbia, it's a few kilometres of this road to the next suburb. In between there's houses with huge properties around them, so it looks almost rural. This road can also feature as a great race track.
Excuse my gigantic finger, I was trying not to die while taking a picture at 80 km/h. :p

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip7small.jpg
This is the next suburb I was talking about. Most of Brisbane looks fairly similar to this sort of place.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip8small.jpg
As you move closer to my destination (uni campus) you go past the Indooroopilly shopping centre (it's up the ramp towards the right a few metres up the road). That's where everyone hangs out. Not me though, I've got places to go, people to see, tutorials to attend.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip9small.jpg
So, having reached campus, you search in vain for a parking spot.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip10small.jpg
This can be avoided by catching a bus.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip11small.jpg
I'm on my trip back home now (I didn't take photos on campus because there were too many people who would've ended up on pictures on the web, and I didn't want to do that to them). That is Brisbane CBD, across the river. The houses with this sort of view must be a fortune.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip12small.jpg
Still going home. Note the "70" sign, it's the first time I noticed it. ;)

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip13small.jpg
This is very close to my place, back in suburbia. In the distance you can see the CBD again, so you have some idea of the size of the forest that is BrisVegas.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip14small.jpg
Because Brisbane is very much a forest. There's houses underneith there somewhere.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip15small.jpg
And we're back home. Note the little flag I made for the World Cup.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip16small.jpg
While I had the camera, I figured I might as well get a more up-to-date pic of myself. Unfortunately I didn't know how to get rid of the flashing light.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip1small.jpg
That's a better one my mum took last week.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip17small.jpg
That's my room. Obviously the camera is making it much untidier than it really is. No really, it's the camera!

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip18small.jpg
And that's NS General for me.
WYTYG (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11481758&postcount=372) thought the idea was good, so I'm starting a thread on it.

If you have access to a photo camera, no matter where you are, no matter what it is you do on an average day, take a few pictures, add a comment or two and post them here. Just try to keep the format of the forum, really wide pics will screw things up a bit. Maybe it's better with large images to just put a link rather than using [img] tags.

Just remember: If there are number plates of cars or something like that, make them illegible. And try not to take pictures of people who don't want to be photographed. If you don't want to show really personal things, that's fine. Just post what you want to post, no pressure.

But one thing should be required: Your NS General's natural habitat. Where are you and what do you look at when you post here (other than the screen, I suppose)?

And if that place/location changes every day? :p

Your pictures are pretty neat, is that website free? I may have to scan a few pictures in if it is.. takes a few hours to scan a roll or two into photoshop, but I've been meaning to for a while anyway.. :)

This is a really good idea, but I don't have any pictures of an entire day. Does it have to be a full photo journal, or can we post individual pictures of things that have happened or places we have been?

Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/)? Yeah, sure. You register, and you get to make an album, much like other hosting sites.

No, just as long as it gives me a little bit of an idea how it is to live wherever you live. :)

You will, and it will be a funky love. Caught me a bit off guard, I thought they looked good, but I was coming off owning a sports car and was really just looking at it to see what it was like to drive one. A bit of a chore, don't let anyone fool you, but once you get the hang of it it's very zen. But me and my roommate where sitting in the back of it and could only say one sentence, "Dude, there's a table in the car." And when people bring up that whole "powerful flashy car is compensation" thing you can just casually point out that you drive a 48hp van and let them draw their own conclusions.

Since I was recycling the picture, I thought I'd recycle my comments as well...

You'd be suprised. Whenever she throws a fit in town whre I have to give her some emergency roadside attention and that hippie that literally comes out of nowhere to help me, every process in the repair links to some philosophy that usually pertains to how we're all connected.

But then, I think he's just angling to see if I know where to get some pot.

Amazing! I know theyre not the easiest to drive. Some people I met have one, they go surfing in Devon. She has to stand up and put her whole weight on the breaks for it to work lol not ideal huh.

Pff, I drive on the freeway all the time. You just become intimate with the far right lane. Unless you're British, Australian, Japanese or any of the countries they've influenced to drive on the crazy side of the road, then you become intimate with the left lane.

Where I live

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0520.jpg

My go-kart. I had a Jeep Wrangler before, but since I'ved moved into town I don't really need it anymore. That, and the price of gas made driving it not too pleasant. People find it humorous that someone of my height (6'3") drives such a small car.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0566.jpg

The street near my house. A typical residential area of a typical central Michigan town. The neighbor still hasn't picked up the branches from the storm a few weeks ago.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0567.jpg

Taking the back route to school. I avoid the main drag because the town has more people in it now than the road system was designed for, and all of them drive really damned slow.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0568.jpg

The aforementioned main drag. It's lot like that the whole way, just random stores and restaurants for about 3 miles.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0569.jpg

The university campus. It's summer, so it's eerily deserted. I've been taking classes all summer. Of 25,000 students I think only about 2,000 are doing summer classes.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/CIMG0571.jpg

The obligatory computer shot. It has remnants of the two things I'm fueled by, coffee and beer. I'll get those damned Arbites painted one of these days.....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/tuebor/Random%20crap/maggieandi.jpg

One of my girlfriend and I. We went on a vacation to Mackinac Island the other day, and it was a lot of fun. They don't allow motorized vehicles on the island, so we brought bikes. It's a lot cheaper than renting horses. And less smelly.

I love that car, and I'm still trying to figure out the color - is it simply silver or is it actually a bit greenish?
Lol @ the neighbor, the old slacker.
And I think I'll love the computer shots the most - heee. :p

My life eh?

Well I was born (http://www.mabank.net/images/1974-ford-pinto-1.jpg) on april 28th, 1987.

After a few years of being a pretty baby (http://www.breastfeedingresourcecenter.org/images/pretty_baby.jpg) I was spotted by a talent group that wanted me to be in a movie. Some kind of kid flick. (http://www.resursadefun.ro/imagini/home-alone.jpg)

Anyways, I wasn't cast in the movie, but i did get some child acting in, and before you know it, i was acting like a full blown hollywood star. Drugs, (http://www.drugs-test.nl/Downloads/Drugs_testen/drugsfotoverkleind.jpg) sex (http://www.mmf-sex.org/mmf-sex-logo.gif), booze (http://parkwayreststop.blogspot.com/booze.jpg) all helped me to to be one of the more famous child stars (http://www.megamonalisa.com/artworks/megamonalisa_mona-coleman.jpg). But eventually it began to take its toll on me. By age 13, I was broke, and out of a job, and at rock bottom. But that wasn't all. I learned i was really adopted. They told me who my father really was (http://www.imperialmarch.com/images/vader.jpg)

Soon I became suicidal..and I nearly took my life...But then...I found the good book (http://www.everypicture.com/shop/books/9645a2ce4f6907fa0a3b916a2aaa995e/green-eggs-and-ham.jpg). Ever since then my life has changed completly. The end (http://www.menk.com/blog/wp-content/abbp21478.jpg)

Okay! Here we go! :)

These pictures were taken at the end of May, a couple months ago, on my way back into L.A., where I usually get my pictures developed. My wasteful habit of finishing off a roll of film before coming into town has paid off this time, since most of my other photos are spaced weeks apart, while these cover just one day, about 9 a.m. to Noon the next day.

Note: My home is the sleeper berth of a truck, so most of these pictures were taken out of the windshield while rolling.. In other words, those smudges in the sky are not UFOs or flak, but merely splattered insects.. also, that airplane-looking thing is a dent in my scanner. :p

Lunch over, time to go:

Awesome.

I hate the heat, and the sand and all that. I don't think I'd last very long in your job. ;)

I run 48 states, Mexico and Canada, so I'm not in the desert too often, luckily. The pictures being in Arizona is mostly a coincidence.. my route was Compton, CA to Long Island, NY for a couple months last year, for example. :)

Pepe Dominguez - now *that* really is a different "day in your life". Actually, looking at those pics, being a truck driver looks like an awesome job. Now, if they'd come up with a way to only send you on scenic routes and get rid of the pesky pick-up/drop-off stuff, can I come and be your assistant? :p

my desk might be of some vague, mild interest (to very bored people): *cries* I totally thought it was interesting. And I wasn't bored. :( :p

And PM & Glitz - both your houses look absolutely lovely. :)

Seriously...I would be the ultimate in moody if I had to drive all that distance. But those mountains are beautiful! What a view! Thats really something we miss out on over here. Gorgeous.

Whoa, WTH? I've never even seen that before. But then, I don't have a VW.

Argh. I think I'm already spamming Neu Leonstein's topic. Sorry. :S

You were maybe thinking of Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance and not the Idiot Guide. AKA Bug Bible AKA How to Keep Your Volkswagon Alive ; A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleate Idiot by John Muir.

The cover used to be black and white and it was spiral bound like a Betty Crocker recipe book. If you own an old carburetted air cooled bug, microbus, or Karmann Ghia in the US this book will see you through almost anything that is thrown your vehicles way good or bad. Highly recommended for the cartoons as well as he procedures and of course the philosophy of the author. Something not often encountered in mauintenance manuals.

If on the other hand you have an old air cooled wagon or kammback with funky old bosch (k-tronic thru l-jetronic as I recall) fuel injection this same manual will misinform you, leave you stranded and in need of expensive parts mage of unobtainium, give incorrect diagnostic procedures , and piss you off enough to throw tools and wish that John Muir had been merciful enough to die before he wrote the early fuel injection part of the Idiot Guide rather than just afterwards.

This is how the book used to look.

Sure, why not? :p It is a pretty good deal, I believe. Or at least the pile of tax-free cash they give you is.. it adds up quickly when you don't have to pay rent, utility bills, gas for your car, auto insurance, etc. You curse the job a thousand times a day, but you forget troubles quickly and basically develop the memory of a goldfish to keep your poise.. that's why so many drivers take photos.. everything's a blur after a while - you forget where you've been and what you've done for months at a time without photos.

In any event, there's a huge shortage of truckers if you're over 21, and almost every route is a scenic one.. for a country of 300 million, almost all of it seems uninhabited outside major cities.. just wide-open road most of the time. :)

What the hell does Compton have that Long Island wants?

Retail goods going from NRT to the Macy's DC in Secaucus, New Jersey.. clothing, televisions, cosmetics, etc. I'd usually go on to Long Island from the yard in Abinel, NJ, but occasionally not. It's a miserable trip into Long Island, so the days I got out of it were especially sweet. I'd either take the bus into Manhattan and screw around or get an early start back and sleep at the travel center in Lexington, Viriginia, one of my favorite truckstops nationwide. :)

Seriously...I would be the ultimate in moody if I had to drive all that distance. But those mountains are beautiful! What a view! Thats really something we miss out on over here. Gorgeous.

Unfortunately, mountains are not your friend as a truck driver. In any case, when you get paid by the mile, you tend not to mind the distance. Set the cruise control, get comfortable and play some CDs as loud as you like. Maybe listen to the news or a Cubs game on XM. For all my complaints about my company, they do provide decent sound systems in the trucks. In any case, you're only allowed under DOT regulations to drive 11 hours per day and 70 hours in 8 days, so it's not bad and goes by quickly.
