Fidel soon to be six feet under?

Well, it might finnally happen. The Man in Green with the Beard who shook hands with that Gonzales kid once (as he is known to people born after 1980 or so) is stepping down.
Its too bad really, Castro wasnt so bad for a Horrible Communist Dictator, most HDC's are prone to bouts of insanity resulting in generalized unpleasantness. Castro seems to have focused his unpleasantness onto very specific people in most cases.
AND he was on the Simpsons once. That was a good episode ;)

The older Castro is a hardline socialist that only targets his political enemies (and lets them run to America), but the younger Castro is just plain evil.
Bad trade off if you ask me.

Castro is a classic dictator who made use of the communist ideology as an opiate for the masses. Very clever fellow, I salute him for figuring out how to stay in office as long as he did. He's outlasted nigh every other world ruler out there.

A bit more than just opiate since he apparently manages to keep them all housed, fed, educated and medicated.

With infrastructure that's some fifty years old. Most of the Cuban economy is exactly what it was December 31, 1959. Cuba was the pinnacle of Latin American development during the fifties, it was leaps and bounds ahead of all of its neighbors. Radios, televisions, cars, education, medical services and roads were amongst the best in the world, in some cases statistics showed Cuba ahead of several of the nations of Western Europe.

It's not hard to build from such a base, not hard at all.

His ideology, his cult of personality, is an opiate for the stagnation of Cuba.

Sounds like an excuse to me. Perhaps if we weren't spending so much on a war machine ... oh forget it. I promised I wouldn't rant over this.

Incidently, I *did* send Fidel a get well soon card.

I hope he gets it.

Not so. If you accept the US CIA world factbook entries, and UN Human Development indicators as legitimate sources, the US has the higher literacy rating. Of course, at the percentages we're dealing with here, the difference in literacy is miniscule.

US: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html

Cuba: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/cu.html

Why? What makes you so sure his brother will do anything differently?

I only hope for one thing: Americans can visit Cuba!

Do you have any idea how hard it is for an American to visit Cuba?! If I want one of the world's finest cigars, I have to go to Canada or Mexico and I can't bring any back with me!

I can enjoy Jabanero (meaning "from havanah") chilis in my sauces and whatnot, but I can't enjoy a fine hand-rolled smoke?!

It's all I ask from the "land of the free" that I be allowed to enjoy a pure Havanah rolled stogie in the comfort of my own living room.

On the distator spectrum, he does seem to be on the hardly insane end. Cuba is lucky to have such a good dictator.

Or he could just be so good at his job, we will never find where the labour camps are.

A post to all those Fidel admirers,
Yes with Hugo Chavez Venezuelan oil $ money, EU, Canada tourists and trade, including limited economic relations with the USA and Cuban American family remittances exchanged for Cuban Convertible Pesos' - CUC - so they can buy certain products in these CUC stores.

You seem to admire a real dictator that would take all your personal rights away from you including a personal computer, cable, free press right wing and left wing and a sight like nationstates but would house, feed, educate and medicate you the way I have described above.

With infrastructure that's some fifty years old.

That's to be expected when embargoes and various forms of trade blocks are in place to prevent influx of resources. Besides, despite the adversities it's faced, not to mention one case of a US sponsored invasion, Cuba has managed to keep functioning as a relatively well off country compared to its Latin American neighbors.

Cuba may not be the most advanced country in the world, or the richest, but you can't argue that they're certainly doing quite a bit for their people.

Would you prefer that Cuba become like, oh, I don't know, Brazil perhaps? Or perhaps Mexico would be a better example. A few in mansions, some in apartments, everyone else in the slums.

Hey, you're free right? Free to starve, free to be exposed to the elements, free to be illiterate.

Freedom's overrated when you're hungry and being rained on.

So what's it to be? Would you prefer your freedom and starve or a guarantee of livelihood?

I've promised myself I won't strangle you, but keep your distance just incase my hands take things into their own... Hands.

The general US sentiment:

Cuba would be WAY better off as one of the slum-riddled, poorly educated, healthcareless crapholes south of the border.

That's bull. For the first forty of those fifty years they had the patronage of a Superpower. The Soviet Union loved Cuba, and exported medical supplies, machinery and the like for Cuban sugar and tobacco. Furthermore, no one ever stopped the Western European countries or Canada from trading with Cuba. The only country that really cut off it's economic ties with Cuba was the US.

South America or Africa are good places to start, of course, all the good countries are taken. China and Russia are pretty much the only really big countries with dictators now. You COULD try Kazakhstan, but I dont think you would do well in Iran or Saudi Arabia.
So yeah, your best bet is South America, at least they generally dont chop people into pieces with machetties for having a different shape of nose, and if theres a coup, they just shoot you, as opposed to gradually tourturing you to death.
And, of course, all the good African states are under heavy observation from outside powers, and South Africa is trying to be nice to people now.
HOWEVER, if you DO manage to take an African state, you can re-name it whatever you want. You cant do that in South America.
