An old classic:

Another one was from protestors at a Bush rally in 2005. They were bitching about the economy and they had a sign that said "Bush doesn't know anything about econonomics"...and they wonder why no one wants to invest in Cleveland?

Yeah, that's a great one. Nothing quite like a mullet questioning your intelligence with a misspelled sign.

Yeah, that's a great one. Nothing quite like a mullet questioning your intelligence with a misspelled sign.

Actually it is entirely possible that the picture is being taken completely out of context, that the "morans" seen in the picture is actually a reference to James Patrick Moran Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Moran), notable for his controversial stance against the Iraq War. "Morans" could actually be a purposeful play on words intended to question the intelligence of Mr. Moran by noticing that his name has spelling similar to "moron." Thus, the sign is not necessarily misspelled, and the intelligence of the "mullet" is not necessarily in question. (edit: in fact, the sign provides evidence that the "mullet" is actually remarkably well informed about politics and relevant issues and personalities.)

It's not so clever that it went completely over people's heads. The average American (other Americans pointed out the picture to me when I first saw it) is simply amazingly ignorant about political issues and personalities, and thus completely missed this potential meaning of the sign in question. If this general ignorance didn't exist, this potential meaning would have been immediately obvious, and no one would be making remarks about how stupid the "mullet" is.

So in a way, the picture in question actually does demonstrate the woeful state of US education, just not in the way typically claimed.

edit: the pathological drive to characterize one's political opponents in unflattering ways doesn't help much either.

It could be a subtle attack on the entire Moran family as evidenced by the intentional pluralization of "Morans"; possibly, the man in question is using the term to refer to a larger antiwar movement inspired by James Moran. It may even be an attempt to tie antiwar activists with the controversial statements of said Congressman that seemed to blame the Jews for the decision of the government to invade Iraq.

A subtle criticism of James Moran, an attack against antiwar activists, or a protest against the possible undercurrents of anti-Semitism in the extreme wing of the anti-Iraq movement...this mulleted Menelaus of the modern age may be a call to honesty in our political discourse.

Apparently, the photo in question is from Missouri. The photo was from March 2003, the same month as Moran's statements. He made the statements on the 3rd of March and the picture is from the 20th or 21st.

I still wonder why he said "Morans" and not "Morons", however.

the majority of americans want some type of border control(horrible i know..lol)
and even if your condescending attitude is correct..that americans against an invasion by people coming here illegally(and draining everyones wallet..except the corporations exploiting them)are all mullet headed nascar hicks...seeing as the majority are against unrestricted immigration...why cant americans decide what to do with there own borders?

if you feel they are wrong(you know..the millions of mullet headed nascar people)why do you care?
if your from another country..your opinion means shit..it's not your country.
if your american...then you have a say..but i might suggest that that many that oppose open borders are NOT mullet headed nascar fans.

the people that support the current staus quo are bleeding heart liberals(that think they are nobly helping others) and corporate companies exploiting the illegals for cheap labor....
wow..strange bedfellows...horrible greedy multinationals exploiting illegals...and well meaning liberals..never thought i would see the day when hippies supported the exploitation of the defenseless.

and in case you have not thought it thru...either you want a huge welfare class, and the taxes that go with it...or you support the exploitation of illegals..you know..the i;ll turn you into immigration if you dont have sex with me..ad nauseam...
or what the usual routine is...work in the sun all day for 50 bucks...so i can make 500,dont make waves or i'll tell my cop friend at the bar to deport you...

illegal immigration hurts the immigrants, the taxpayer...and benefits only scumbags!

open borders...jeez...yea i want to pay for everyone in the worlds kids...call me selfish..i can barely pay for mine.

Read on, wherin I describe my impressions of the protestors on both sides:

The protests of the right have a bunch of old people, NASCAR fans, mullet-waring white trash and hillbillies while the left has a bunch of old black women, elitist asshole professors, pot-smoking hippies, and uneducated losers who can't hold a job.

I ridicule these people because politics is so boring most of the time that there's nothing else to talk about. This time, the image was from the right so I ridiculed the right...if I could have found an image from the left I would have done so. Personally, I find the dragon set on fire by an environmental group in 2004 to be a classic example of left-wing stupidity.

If they were mexican all you'd have to do to clear the place is shout "POLICIA! POLICIA!" "LA MIGRA! LA MIGRA!" and blow a whistle. The signs wouldn't have hit the ground before they'd be several hundred yards away. The illegals would be guilty of illegally entering the country. The minutmen, well, guilty of not using a dictionary.

Oooooooooor it could be because after starting a very long and costly trek to get my (soon to be) wife into the country legally from Japan of all places, I have come to the realization that our system is seriously, seriously screwed over. It is the remains of a bunch of conflicting, xenophobic, reactionary legislation that was aimed at various passing groups that have long since folded into the American public (I.e. your family). Looking at immigrations history, I am also struck just how many of the same arguments you scream about now were advanced by Ben Franklin against the Germans, or the newspapers of the times against the Irish, the Italians, the Eastern Europeans, the Chinese, and so on.

The faces may change but the dance remains the same.

I support immigration reform (which no one seems to be talking about) because I know my history and I know it will be next to impossible to move 11 million people out and that no wall in history has ever kept people from going where they want to. To pretend otherwise is foolish.

That's a stretch worthy of a yogi.

Why? Because a stupid "mullet" is incapable of devising a rather simple pun? Or because the explanation is simply inconvenient to one's ability to ridicule political opponents with empty insults? Or perhaps because admitting the possibility is to admit that one didn't understand a pun that a "mullet" could understand?

That's a stretch worthy of a yogi.

...In fact, United For Peace And Justice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_for_Peace_and_Justice) indicates that the phrase "Get A Brain Morans" has been used in mock "pro-war" protests: http://unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=1590 . Has the origins of the photo presented in this thread been verified or confirmed? I searched for relevant info from snopes via google, but only found a message board thread pointing to the UFPJ article above. At any rate, yet more doubt is placed upon the theory that the word "morans" is a misspelling; now it is possible that it is simply the result of anti-war oriented activities intended to malign political opponents. It is also possible that the pro-war oriented adopted the phrase in order to remove its original purpose, turning it against the anti-war lobby.

So, please demonstrate the actual origins of the photo in question, or present evidence that it actually did originate with genuine pro-war activists who cannot spell. In short, demonstrate that one isn't simply making fun of an imaginary strawman existing solely between the ears of the anti-war lobby.
