"Happy Birthday" MTV

Today in 1981, MTV televised its first video, The Buggle's "Video Killed the Radio Star", (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmjuGIVyP4Q&search=video%20killed%20the%20radio%20star) to a very small audience on a New Jersey cable system.

In what I can only call the ultimate display of how worthless the station is...

VH1 CLASSIC is playing the first day of MTV all day today (ending at midnight EST), and doing a replay on Saturday the 5th. How pathetic is that?!? 25 years on the air, and you PROXY birthday? I mean, COME ON! At least change the programming for an hour or something on MTV. WTF?!?

Now, as an 8 year old, I really, really LOVED MTV. For about 10 years (until they "expanded" into other (ahem) "programming", the channel was my link to new music and a whole different world.

When I went to college, I started to see the drift. "The Real World" and "House of Style" started the shift -- these days MTV plays 4 hours of music per day on avearge, 3 of them before 8 am!! :(

Worse, the same guys that ruined MTV did the same to VH1 ("I love 5 minutes ago", anyone!??), and now VH1 Classic seems to be going the same route.

My suspicion is that the whole music videos over TV model will disappear when wireless video (iPod or whatever) becomes widespread.

Any thoughts??

MTV gave the world Daria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daria) and Downtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_%28TV_series%29), and that makes up for any harm that they've ever done. :)

You can blame the British for the second one.

I think they started it. I have no proof of it, but they did. They always do.

We came up with a better version of MTV and called it MuchMusic here.
It has gone the way of of it's predecessor too though.

A moment of silence for what once was.

I used to get MuchMusic down here. It was okay, but I quickly got tired of all the Bryan Adams and Rush. ;)

LOL, well there was that "Canadian content" ruling the CRTC shoved down their throat, but other than that...

The lowkey unadventures of Daria and Jane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daria) make up for anything.

MTV's post Beavis and Butthead animation was fantastic while it lasted. Hell, Downtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_%28TV_series%29) was nominated for an Emmy during its first and sadly, only season.

What does the demise of music on TV tell us? That it doesn't sell as well as the 'reality' crap? Probably, because no one in TV is in business to lose money -- except PBS, of course.

So you can just kiss music video goodby until the networks see a market for it again.

And I really miss my MTV.

They didn't do a very good job! It's been 17 YEARS, and Alannah Myles still hasn't done any solid followup to "Black Velvet"!!

Quit whining about the demise of music TV and get MTV2. At least in Europe that features good stuff.

Hi
Im your video dj
I always talk like Im wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
Whats left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

So dont create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

Youve turned rock and roll rebellion
Into pat boone sedation
Making sure nothings left to the imagination

M.t.v. get off the
M.t.v. get off the
M.t.v. get off the air
Get off the air

See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
Theres something I dont like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesnt care

M.t.v. get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial tv has in 25
Its the new frontier, they say
Its wide open, anything can happen
But youve got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When youre too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.

Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
Thats the name of the game

But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records? !?

M.t.v.get off the air!

MTV2 also sucks.
"Viva La Bam", whatever the hell this is, is on right now. They're forcibly cutting off people's hair on the street.

WTF? Damnit, I have to admit that show sucks. Still, they play good music when they aren't showing that emo or metal shit.

Hey, I've been a Doors fan forever. But I can't believe that you wouldn't like
Dream Theatre's "Scenes from a Memory"
Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" (or "Operation Mindcrime part 2")
Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast"
Judas Priest's "British Steel"
...I could go on...
