A perfume popular in the '50s.

A taboo is an unwritten restriction on behavior. Cultures have different taboos, in some cultures women keep their heads covered because bare heads are taboo - they could be stark naked as long as their heads are covered. Other cultures have other taboos. Generally, punishment for violating a taboo could range from social ostracism to death.

Our current emphasis on "PC" is a manifestation of this.

Taboo: from the Polynesian word tabu; any act, condition or type of physical contact that, if undertaken or manifested, could result in adverse consequences for the well being of the given tribe or community. Traditional examples would include an uninitiated person's contact with sacred places, persons or objects, or unacknowledged incest or adultery. In contemporary Asian cultures, for example, it is generally considered taboo to touch the head of one who is older than oneself. In the West, many acts which are now considered more or less as "bad form" were probably at one time regarded as taboo in the stricter sense of the term.

1 belief
2 bullshit
2.1 democracy
3 ignorance
4 rather not debating with
5 voting
6 fooling around

umm... it's just a cultural thing really - like not walking down the street naked because our culture deems it to be inappropriate and social pressure from our peers, or belief that social pressure would be exerted, stops us from doing it.
