Reds vs. Reds

You know, it only just now occurred to me the significance of Democrats being "blue" and Republicans being "red," considering it was more Republicans, including Joe McCarthy, who ruined lives by calling people "reds."
I realize it's most likely a coincidence and the fact that the color represents things far different in each time period, but does it strike anyone else as odd that no one else seems to have mentioned it? Or have I just been living in a cave with my eyes shut and my fingers in my ears and saying LA-LA-LA-LA?
I always found it funny that in every country in the world bar America, red means left wing.
Clearly Blair saw the GOP and thought they were lefties, like he pretends to be. Poor man, Bush hasn't the heart to tell him and Blair...well, he just doesn't have the intelligence to work it out for himself...

i thought the conservatives were red.. up until I was about 8. Red FTW, or maybe green.

Red is centralist here. Orange is left.

Yeah, but who pays attention to Canada anyway? :p

Well, the "reds" were the communists that Republicans rallied people against, so yeah, the leftists, until the 2000 elections when the news organizations started coloring Republican-won states "red" and Democrat-won states "blue."
I just think it's ironic, is all.

Mer-cans. We steal their (softwood lumber) money, and import their labrals.
Why do we even assign colours to political ideologies anyways? Seems to have no real point to it, IMO.

You hold a moot point.
Years back, the democrats where the color red, and the republicans were blue.

So that election night TV shows can put the numbers next to little coloured boxes and most people know who the numbers refer to.

The good ol' citizens of the U-S-of-A, that's who! We're just biding our time until Canada realizes it might as well give up the fight and resign themselves to U.S. annexation. It's only a matter of time. [spooky voice] JOIN US!!!!
Of course, you'll have to get rid of things like socialized medicine, the toonie, and your dignity. But you'll get a lower unemployment rate and I won't be tripping over homeless people every block or so next time I go to Toronto. :D
[All in fun, please don't kill me. I have a wife and 3-month-old son.]

Aye, needs to be simple for America.
My eyes hurt just imagining that.
Now make it strobe.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the masses are made of complete and utter idiots.

LOL. Maybe it's just a delayed reaction. According to those who were older at the time, I should have gone blind at age 12, only 16 years ago. But that's another thread for another day. ;)

EDIT: OK, I'll stop hijacking my own thread.

Ah, that old chestnut. God also kills a kitten every time you jack off.
Guy walks in on his son to find him masturbating. So he says 'son, do that too much and you'll go blind'
The son says 'Dad, i'm over here'

It's because there's no serious leftist movement in the US. The American Socialist Party is tiny, smaller than the liberatarians, smaller than the Greens. Even with FDR, Truman, Johnson and Nixon, the welfare state never became as entrenched in the US as it did in Europe. As such, the constituency of the welfare state never developed.

I wholeheartedly disagree, of course, but I think it's an appropriate follow up to your previous statement.
