Pretty cool stuff with hopes to save the lives of prison guards first.

Center for Composite Materials, it's a mix of polyethylene glycol, a polymer found in laxatives and other consumer products, and nanobits of silica, or purified sand. Together they produce a "sheer-thickening liquid" that stiffens instantly into a shield when hit hard by an object. It reverts to its liquid state just as fast when the energy from the projectile dissipates.

Edit: forgot to put the last part in there

Who do you think should get the first production if it is as good as claimed? US troups or something more local like cops?

Reminds me of the body shields in Dune. Soon criminals will be learning to make the killing stroke slowly ;)

Well, guns would be screwd then...unless you could slowly pistol whip...

??

This sounds cool. I want to see cops/prison guards/soldiers in a wet suit ^.^

To the edit: I think cops first, but that's not to say the army shouldn't get them, but it's easier to give something to your neighbor then to ship it around the world ^.^

baking powder? i know the stuff you mean

this invention sounds pretty awesome... it gets put into wobbly (liquid-filled) clothing and you got head-to-toe armour protection. that's cool

could it not be used for other things like strengthening windows, and in cars?

It doesn't seem like it would be clear, and if it is it would probably distort, though the technology may inprove, we'll just have to see ^.^

What would be intersting to see would be the containment unit. If it is a liquid, it will have to be contained in some sort of material that would not perforate.

Sounds like the stuff the US and Canadian Olympic ski teams used in the elbow and shin guards of their racing suits.

The idea of STF body armors been running around for quite some time. And it's been "in the works" almost as long.

Why on Earth would we want to give it to the good people of Troup (http://www.trouptexas.org/)? Is crime back home really that out of control? (:p)

And Dinaverg, PM, and Sarkhaan, that stuffs usually called oobleck, after the Dr. Seuss story.

That's such a brilliant idea. My question is, is it really peanut butter? Because, if it stays fresh, could it be used as emergency rations?

The 1st person who tries it out will be like Heath Ledger in a Knights Tale when he tried his new armour...hmm heath swoon!
