I love the WWII era, and I really loved the movie Saving Private Ryan, but never really got a chance to see any episodes of Band Of Brothers. I was wondering if it was any good? Good enough to rent or buy?

What do you like or not like about the series? Whats the drama vrs action ratio? Would you recommend it?

PLEASE NO SPOILERS.

Thanks everyone

My main criticism of SPR was that it was another version of the US winning the war all on its own. I only saw a couple of episodes of BoB but it seemed quite good.

Buy the series, it is excellent, there is some drama, but it does not take away from the action, I would definatly reccomend buying this series, I own it.

band of brothers is amazing. get it. i promise you won't be disappointed!

its not all action, a lot of it focuses on the reality of everyday life and how emotionally difficult it is for the soldiers of E company. its all based on RL events from the company, too, and has interviews with survivors talking about the events as they remember them.

just get it.

Wow, that is awesome, thanks for the quick and helpful responses I really mean it. I dont think I have the dough right now to actually buy the entire series or anythign right now, but I will definately think about buying the first season or something next time I hit up the store.

Your replies are much appreciated. :)

I do happen to agree with that, I like Eddie Izzard's comments on it.

"I mean at least you could have one of us just wave at the camera and go "ello" or something. We knew where Ryan was the whole time, you Americans just never stopped to ask us..."

I got the boxset for £20 in HMV. Result.

It's incredible, I spent a day just watching every single episode as soon as I got it.

It's about 20x better than Saving Private Ryan.

It is very, very good. However, I recommend watching it one episode a day -- otherwise after awhile it (like anything else) loses its effect. I saw 4 episodes on History Channel in a marathon, then saw the sam four more one at a time again later. The marathon didn't do it justice, IMO. It's a series that needs contemplation.

Yeah. It really pisses me off when Horatio Hornblower doesn't show the Americans that the Royal Navy forced into service, but instead shows the British winning it all on their own. :headbang:

DUDE. NOT EVERY WW2 MOVIE IS ABOUT THE ENTIRE THEATRE OF OPERATIONS.

During the show, they quite clearly state (and quite obviously show) that it revolves about what happened to ONE company in the war. It's NOT "The Longest Day", it's not "A Bridge Too Far", it's not "Anzio" or any one of a dozen other movies I can think of.

But then, it was mostly filmed in Czechoslovakia. :)

But I liked SPR. It was really the first movie set in WWII that showed how gruesome war was. Before, when people were shot, they were shown with neat little holes, if the bullethole was shown at all. The other movies didn't show blown out intestines.

Band of Brothers was seriously cool. And it came in a square metal can, how cool is that? When I caught bits of it on TV, I must have seen a 'Canadianized' version of it, because when they would swith to interviews with the veterans, the Canadian version had Canadian vets, that had nothing to do with the characters in the original version.

Damn CBC, and their Canadian Content. Give me a movie about Vimy Ridge already!

Sorry about Ranting. Band of Brothers is cool.

I believe they were meant to run for an hour on TV (so less than that if you include time for ads). It was a mini-series, and definitely over.

No Band of Brothers II. (God I hope not...)

Actually, I seem to recall it going for an hour and a half per episode. Maybe they cut it differently for Australian TV?

Why would a story about a unit of the US army have to include stories about other nations?

Because everyone knows that there were really British, French and Canadian troops fighting alongside Americans on Omaha Beach ....
If the movie took place on Sword, Juno and Gold beaches that criticism would be acceptable.

buy it. its expensive, but its worth it. Or be like me and get them burned on DVD :p

as for a sequel, the series ends with easy company being disbanded after the war. to do a sequel they would have to follow another unit throughout the war (which is doable (big red one)) but unlikely.

In all fairness, I watched most of them on DVD, so I'm not so sure...

And if we're going to do a sequel to Band of Brothers, I suggest that a Zombie Hitler rise from the grave and direct his Fascist zombie hordes to take over the EU. I'm not entirely sure what a zombie blitzkrieg would look like, but I'd watch it just for shits'n'giggles.

I saw one episode of BoB a few weeks ago, the one where they come across the concentration camp. It was one of the most powerful things I've ever seen on television. I'm not afraid to admit that I actually had tears rolling down my face.

Yes. But that is due to work, not due to you. ;)

But I will admit it to everyone that I too have cried during war movies before, now that I think about it, war movies are the only movies that CAN make me cry.. but thats because I really try to place myself there and put myself in their shoes, you know? Try to imagine and feel what they felt.

We Were Soldiers was one that got me, esp at the end when Moore was talking about why he would never forgive himself.. :( But I think that that kind of power in a war movie is what it's greatest strength too. I dont like the rambo type movies of war, I like the ones that show us that kind of humanity even if it is a bit Hollywooded up.

I am a film appreciator, that much is certain.

In the last day I've watched up to epidode 7 (The Breaking Point) and I've cried a good four or five times.

I've seen it many times before, but every time I see an episode it reminds me that it's the greatest thing ever to be produced for television.
