Success???

We have all heard the disgustingly sweet relationship of Heavy Metal and Glitzy, but other than that, have people found success dating on Nationstates? Or more just hooking up? Just curious, as it always seems people (males) are out there looking for dates...

There's a couple that are having a baby together due in September. So for some people it is possible. :p

(glitzi's here and says hi btw :fluffle: :D)

edit: i think we're just really quite vocal about it, compared to those NSlovers before us...

I think just getting people to meet is hard enough...although us Brits are doing quite well for now *beams proudly*

Besides, being one of the many males on here, there seem to be fewer ladies, so they can obviously pick and choose ;)

Anyways, congrats to Big Jim P & Roan :D

of course! :)
and i think the net is actually a great place to meet people, despite its bad rep... you can really get to know someone in depth before you meet them, rather than basing everything on split-second uninformed decisions, often based on pre-defined judgements (such as in a bar... meeting someone there really is nothing more than a mix of pot luck and drunken horny lust ;))
Not bad

Heh, bit early for that and bit young too (I am, at least), but I know we both want marriage, so if things should work out between us.... who knows? We could be the next NS marriage! :P

You don't have to make quick decisions in real life.

The main problem with bars, regarding meeting new people, is the loud music. Doesn't facilitate talking!

You know, sometimes thats a good thing. Gives you more time to think up clever remarks. Also, me and my boys usually go to a club to pick up women. Less talking, more dancing. But don't be one of those guys that wander around attacking women while they're dancing. I have the most fun when we just get a few drinks in us and then go hang out by the floor. The women will pull you in if they see you aren't going to chase them. ;)

And to be completely honest, I just have never had much interest in meeting people I know from the internet. I'm always afraid they'll turn out to be an idiot or a weirdo, and I couldn't tell until I met them in person.

I'm just the other way around... I hate clubbing, I don't dance, the loud noise (in most cases it doesn't deserve the name "music") makes any form of conversation impossible, and in my experience the people you meet there invaribaly turn out to be weirdos or idiots. :D

ditto that!

you can't possibly get to know someone well whom you meet in a club or pub... not in one evening. sure you can not go home with them, exchange numbers and do the whole dating thing and get to know them... but my point was that right from the outset its a matter of pot luck as to who'll you'll meet there, and what they're really like outside the drunken dancefloor (which you can't tell in an evening). plus the whole thing of "quick decisions" is that when out in that kind of social situation you can only go on what someone looks like as you can't possibly know what they're like as a person. therefore you can only make snapshot decisions as to their character based on predefined stereotypes and guesses from previous experience... which isn't really that great :p

getting to know someone on the internet means you can really get to know them as people (and get to know and trust that they aren't "weirdos or [an] idiot"), so if it actually gets to the point of you meeting (glitzi and i were involved for months before we met) there's a high chance of getting on if you can get over the hurdles of actually being attracted to each other in person, and communicating in person as well as you may do online.

the downside to this is that you have much more 'emotionally invested' in the person than in normal dating, so if the meet-up goes badly then it could be way more painful than a date turning sour. plus, you pretty much have to be looking for some kind of relationship (generally speaking) to even begin to bother with this approach...

The bit about emotional involvement is true, I think.
I try meeting people over the net right now, simply because I'm no good at all talking to strangers, ever. You do get to know them, and you get to like the idea you have of them before you meet them. And if the date goes wrong in some way, or if you just can't make your idea of them see eye to eye with the reality of who they are, it's a disappointment. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

But it's still better than trying to talk to random strangers....

I don't ever really keep track of the gender of those I debate or talk with on NS, and I know I've never had a real conversation with anyone on here.. but, if I've ever responded to a female poster more than, say, twice in one thread, then I can say I've been more successful on NS than in real life. :) In 3000+ posts, it must have happened once, I'm confident of that fact... that's a success story in my book. :p
