Superman is Jesus

Christian Echoes?
Stabbed in side with Kryptonite - like Jesus stabbed with spear
Empty hospital room - empty tomb of Jesus
Falls to Earth, arms outstretched - Crucifixion-like
Cradled in mother's arms - like Michelangelo's Pieta
Superman says world needs saviour
Superman's five years in space echoes the Ascension
Shown with weight of world/sin on shoulders
This is a good article about whether Superman Returns, the new film, is essentially an echo of the Gospels. I find it interesting to see that even in this Godless age in which we live, people are still crying out for heroes and saviours. Perhaps Hollywood is the new Christianity?

You wrote that the world doesn't need a saviour, but every day I hear people crying for one.

yeh the world always needs a saviour. it's just a shame that people cling to them even after they've been eaten by worms or flames. cuz that just screws people up.

I have no problems with Jesus being in the comic book world. Suits him.

Godless? We live in a "Godless" age? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the majority of the world's population religious? And a number pf those religions have multiple gods. There must be thousands of gods worshipped all the time.

I'd hardly call that godless.

In any case, yeah, "Superman Returns" is most likely all bout the gospels and such.

Just another reason for me to not see that movie.

I wouldn't have thought that was entirely fair. Is it fair to blame Leonardo Da Vinci for the effect of The Da Vinci Code? Is it fair to blame the British Prime Minister for the disaster that was Love Actually? Is it fair to blame Solid Snake for the conspiracy theories of Metal Gear Solid?

Whether history, allegory or fiction, Jesus is hardly culpable for the disgraceful history and continued injustice and social manipulation of the Church.

And, well, yeah. Superman is the blueprint messiah figure of 20th century America. That he resembles Christ is no real surprise.

Maybe to start with, but the second he gets arrested people start throwing rocks and nailing him to trees.

What a helpful and well thought out contribution.

Perhaps you ought to direct your wisdom at the author's of the article, however.

Superman and Jesus have both been abducted as vehicles for greed and prejudice. If either of them were real, and knew how they were being used, they'd be disappointed and angered.

Probably by Americans, just as with Christ and his own people.

Of course, I'd throw a stone too. His motto is SUPPOSED to be "Truth, Justice, and the American way" not "Truth, Justice, and all that stuff".

you mean trying to nail him to a tree...

then again, Jesus always said to avoid Greed and monetary wealth...

and it is GOLD Kryptonite that kills Superman (tho how they ever tested it makes me wonder...)

I like the idea that it implies Superman is a world citizen. Everybody needs a rock thrown in front of a raging river that has just busted through a dam; not only Americans.

He's a world icon, now. And there's money to be made when movies go to other countries. Superman gloating about how American he is may not go over well, given the past few years.

True, but his origins did start in America. I started a thread to see if other countries also has superheroes and what are they.

would be interesting to see what Icons they come up with.

Actually, that phrase began with the TV show (which not surprisingly was in the 50's), not with the comic.

Jesus christ people, it's called a 'homage' nearly every movie ever made has a deliberate homage of some sort in it. Superman is not JC, he was never JC, the director clearly thought that he would like to illustrate the parallels between JC and Superman. A quick reference to another source. There was also several homages to the first two Superman movies (Acted and directed by a completely different cast/crew).

That was deliberate. It was political too. Remember how Hollywood is always criticised by neo-cons for being liberal? Thats why.

When the first Christian gospels were circulated in Rome, people in the forum said that this new "Jesus" character was based on the old Etruscan super-hero, Flavius Garum, who rose from the dead and could only be harmed with fermented fishguts.
