Most famous wrestler in history?

Hmm.

Just wondering, whom would the denizens of NS consider the most famous wrestler of all human history? Any wrestlers whose actual existence is open to reasonable doubt (for example, Hercules) are excluded.

EDIT: 'is' to 'are' because I am a retard.

Rowdy Roddy Piper? He's still involved in wrestling today and he's made some movies. That would boost his popularity, no?

Probably not guys like The Polish Hammer, Ivan Putski, or Bruno Sanmartino. You've got to be a real wrestling fan to remember them.

The Samoans with Skandar Akbar. Kamala, the Ugandan Warrior. The Rock and Roll Express and The Midnight Express. The Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erich family. Ahh, the memories.

Oh yeah, and to answer the question, it's probably Hulk Hogan, but I vote for Andre the Giant.

Those were the days. Wrestling was simple, not all sophisticated like now with their fancy angry leprchauns and coffin matches and I, as a little boy, thought it was real.

Yeah, it's really gone to crap ever since McMahon helped it get big back in the days of Hulkamania and the big pay-per-views like Wrestlemania. It was a lot more fun when it was mostly local, when you could run into the Junkyard Dog on the street of your town the day before a match or something.

I remember Sgt. Slaughter coming to my school and talking about drugs.

My school was in a very small town with less than 300 kids.

Those guys were awesome. Today, well ... bleh.

I saw Sgt. Slaughter at a wrestling event in a CYO gymnasium when I was a kid. Still kicking myself for not getting an autograph.

Ahhh, interesting. I was personally thinking of another shockingly famous political figure/wrestler when I started this thread, but nobody has mentioned them yet.

Suffice to say that currently Keruvalia is winning the thread.

I thought this was about real wrestling, and was going to say Chris Bono. But, as I can see, it is about that "Soap opera for guys" crap called "professional wrestling", which is just sad.

Big daddy or Giant Haystacks. Either one.

Most famous wrestler would prob have to be Hogan. The fact he even got his own 'Osbourne'-type reality programme shows just how popular he is.

As for the Biggest Wrestler, It has to be Giant Haystacks. He was 1" taller than Andre and 50lb heavier.
Shame he never made it over in the US.

Here's a pic of a very rare match between the two:

What a match that would have been to watch!
Bet the ref was more than a little scared of being accidently squashed between the two.

bah, you beat me to it! :p

I would also say Akibono, Musashimaru, and Konishki, Sure it Sumo, but it's also WRESTLING!

also to the list I would add

Chyna: she was tough enough to play with the big boys.
Mick Foley: great man, and he gave alot to his sport.
Undertaker: another who puts the sport before himself.
