A single-man flying wing, originally intended as a sports gimmick, may soon allow elite soldiers to fly into action like Batman. International military experts are excited -- and worried about what the enemy might get up to with the new device.
...
If Geissler's plans come true, such a high jump height will eventually no longer be necessary: Geissler wants the wing to be equipped with its own engines -- small jet valves that won't allow for breakneck speeds, "but which will ensure that altitude can be maintained." What that version of the wing will look like is no secret: A "Gryphon" with mock jet valves was specially constructed for the James Bond movie "Die Another Day", although it wasn't used during the shoot -- lead actor Pierce Brosnan injured his knee and is said then to have called off the stunt.

Real jet valves, complete with fuel, would weigh about 15 kilograms (33 lbs.), according to Geissler, but they would also involve a reduction in weight, since they would render the oxygen-supply system superfluous. The wing's reach will be extended to as much as 200 kilometers thanks to the jet valves.

Can't wait for the civilian version. Maybe one with engines strong enough to allow take-off...and then we finally have what humanity always wanted: A jetpack!

Problem is it can't be buried as easily as a parachute. Still pretty neat though.. might even be better than just a parachute under certain circumstances.

Who cares? It's wayy cooler.
In fact, that's probably the main drawback - I think most ppl (I know I would) would go around telling everyone they could find how they managed to fly into enemy terrority.
"Hey, look at me! I flew here on Batman's wings! It was aawwwwesome!! Look at me, everybody! Woot!"

Prob not a good idea for stealth missions.

Civilian versions? I ain't gonna like that. They better have some damn strict licensing procedures if they do it.

It's no more risky than a motorcycle really, unless you're high enough to interfer with aircraft flight patterns.

But I see a problem with persons using it for criminal trespassing over high fences.

In an airplane? Can't soldiers already do that?

Seriously, this isn't comicbook geek stuff. Who, by now, doesn't know that Batman doesn't fly?

I am pretty sure jetpacks are real, there's an old Bond movie where he uses one. I don't think they were ever useful for long distances though.

I know it's not the most reliable source, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetpack

What about that jetpack from the opening ceremony of the Olympics in L.A. 1984? Didn't they have someone ride one?

And what about the opening credits on "Fall Guy"? Lee Major's riding one, too!
