Canterbury played shit.
Hawkes Bay were shitter they made 6 line breaks but with no support players or a fumbled pass they made a game that could have been closeish rather crap.

Ouch! The much-heralded Air New Zealand Cup got off to a predictably worrying start when newcomers Hawke's Bay were out-gunned by Canterbury 45-nil in the opening match in Napier on Friday night.

The purists can shout all they like about the passion and grit we will see from the four new teams brought into this expanded championship and Hawke's Bay didn't lack either of those qualities.

But the scoreboard doesn't lie and while this was a patchy Canterbury effort at times, they still had far too much class and skill for the Magpies when it mattered, running in six tries.

Hawke's Bay missed their one early penalty attempt and never really threatened the Canterbury line until the dying stages when they were denied by some typically determined red and black defence.

Hawke's Bay were guilty of some poor set-piece work - they lost their first four lineout throws - and also turning over possession when they had the odd half-chance. Their tackling quality and general accuracy was also regularly brought into question.

The Magpies won't be disgraced against some of the lesser sides in this championship but unless they can grow quickly in their new environment they look well off the pace of the top tier. This was a reality check for the home side as Canterbury had the ability to take the game up a gear when they needed to, grabbing quick control of the match and solidifying that either side of the break.

All Blacks Mose Tuiali'i and Campbell Johnstone shone in a good forwards effort from the red and blacks.

Don't forget this was far from a full-strength Canterbury side with coach Rob Penney sprinkling plenty of youth amongst his core of established talent. It was a solid performance from the southerners and nothing more. But that was all that was needed to nail an easy five championship points under the circumstances.

Promising halfback Andy Ellis had a busy night and outside him Canterbury look to have unearthed another classy first five-eighths in New Zealand Colt Steven Brett who got the first try of the new championship and showed some wonderful touches.

Canterbury took just two minutes to post the first points of the season with Brett showing a cool head to take the right option. He chip-kicked through a flat Bay defence close to the line and regathered for the touchdown.

Canterbury had 10 points in as many minutes with Ben Blair's boot showing its usual accuracy.

The Magpies consolidated from there with a good period of play where they managed to scavenge some half-decent possession and get a bit of field position. But they couldn't manage any points and Canterbury came back to finish the first half strongly with a further two converted tries making it 24-nil at halftime.

Cameron McIntyre gave Canterbury the bonus point with his second try, this one next to the posts off another neat grubber kick from Brett.

The game meandered along a bit from there. Johnstone was rewarded for his good effort with their fifth try and Tuiali'i nabbed the last right on fulltime.

The Magpies didn't lack effort or character despite the scoreline. Big blindside Michael Johnson had a busy night and hooker Hikawera Elliott had plenty of presence for his 60 minutes of work. Former All Blacks Danny Lee and Nathan Mauger showed they will provide plenty of value for their signings.

There was some concern for replacement forward Nui Bartlett who was stretchered off 10 minutes from the end with a worrying neck injury.

It doesn't get any easier for Hawke's Bay as they face Otago in Dunedin in the second round while Canterbury head to Whangarei to take on Northland.

Canterbury 45: Stephen Brett, Cameron McIntyre 2, Mose Tuiali'i 2, Campbell Johnstone tries; Ben Blair 6 con, pen.

HT: 24-0.

They couldn't quite match the impressive Canterbury effort in beating Hawke's Bay 45-nil in the opening game of the new championship on Friday night.

But that was more to do with Manawatu who put up a spirited second half performance.

Auckland had to rely on some resolute defence to keep the Turbos at bay at times. But Manawatu, who treated the crowd to an impressive military display in the pre-match entertainment, didn't have the firepower to press home their opportunities.

Still, it will have been a solid boost of confidence for the home side who finished the match camped on the Auckland line.

But the result was well and truly settled by then. The damage was done by Auckland in the first half when last year's first division champions, showed their class.

The blue and whites had their four-try bonus point before halftime where they led 24-3 with centre Jamie Helleur getting a double.

Brent Ward's strong game saw him rewarded with a try soon after the break to extend that margin before Manawatu put together a good period and were finally rewarded with a try to Rob Foreman off a lineout drive.

Auckland kept their composure and worked their way back into Manawatu territory. They probed the blindside successfully with Jerome Kaino feeding the final pass for Brad Mika to crash over in the corner.

Lachlan Munro made some good impact when he replaced Tasesa Lavea at No 10 and capped it off with a wonderful solo try.

Then it was left to Auckland to repulse some strong surges by Manawatu in the dying stages.

Auckland: Saimone Taumoepeau, Joe Tekori, Jamie Helleur 2, Brent Ward, Brad Mika, Lachlan Munro tries; Ward 2 con; Isa Nacewa con.

Manawatu 10: Rob Foreman try; Graham Smith con, pen.

HT: 24-3

That isn't even a fair assesment of the game...
Auckland sucked.
Manawatu blew 3 tryscoring oppurtunities.
Auckland should have had another 3 players binned for various slowing the ball in the ruck incidents.

OTAGO 23 COUNTIES MANUKAU 19

Counties Manukau put their hand up to be counted in the championship when they took last year's beaten finalists Otago to the wire in Auckland late on Saturday afternoon.

Otago had to hold of a storming comeback from the home side to secure a patchy but vital win.

They never looked like getting a bonus point in the tries department though and Counties Manukau got some consolation with a bonus point for the narrow defeat.View larger image

Anton Oliver

Judging by the statistics sheet they could well have won. They enjoyed plenty of possession courtesy of their hard-working pack and also had plenty of the territory stakes. And they almost got home on the back of some impressive goalkicking from Blair Feeney.

In the end Otago just kept their cool to come away with victory but clearly there is plenty of work to do down in Dunedin over the coming week before they meet Hawke's Bay, another newcomer to this premier division.

Otago made hard work of the first half to lead 10-6 at the break with a converted try to Callum Bruce and further penalty from Nick Evans.

Counties Manukau exerted plenty of pressure but had to be satisfied with two penalties from Feeney.

Otago introduced All Blacks hooker Anton Oliver for the second spell and there was a bit of a lift in their driving play over the third quarter.

Evans kicked another penalty to give the visitors a bit of breathing space.

They pressed on to attack and the Counties Manukau scrum went backwards on their own line with the ball squirting free for Otago flanker Josh Blackie to touch down for an opportunist's try that eventually proved decisive.

Suddenly it was 20-6 and Counties Manukau had plenty of work to do in the final quarter.

But they responded in fine style with their forwards getting stuck into the muscle work. They managed to free the ball to big Kristian Ormsby from a maul close to the line and he used incredible strength to force his way over for the try despite three Otago tacklers. Feeney's sideline conversion kept Counties Manukau interested.

Two long-range Feeney penalties narrowed the gap to one point much to the delight of the small crowd at Ericsson Stadium and set up a frantic final five minutes.

But Evans responded with a pressure penalty kick to see Otago through to a scratchy win.

Counties looked dangerous at times with halfback and skipper Ben Meyer always busy and Chiefs centre Niva Ta'auaso dangerous with his limited opportunities.

Otago 23: Callum Bruce, Josh Blackie try; Nick Evans 2 con, 3 pen.

Counties Manukau 19: Kristian Ormsby, Blair Feeney con, 4 pen.

HT: 10-6

Wow, Taranaki gave Wellington a scare...

WELLINGTON 30 TARANAKI 14

The Lions took a long time to subdue a gallant Taranaki side in their evening clash in New Plymouth and finished up with a flattering win through two late tries.

Wellington first five-eighths Jimmy Gopperth scored 20 of his side's points, including a fine try, as the Lions staged a second half comeback to nail victory.

It was a match full of high energy rather than high quality and was littered with handling errors from both sides.

Taranaki had a try to centre Matt Harvey after just three minutes.View larger image

Wellington came back with little reward and then allowed the Taranaki pack to take control with captain Paul Tito, young blindside Jarrad Hoeata and 135kg tighthead prop Census Johnson, putting in prominent performances.

Taranaki, playing their effective no-frills brand of rugby, worked their way to a 14-6 lead early in the second half and should really have closed the match out from there.

But then some of the big names in the Lions backline stepped up.

Gopperth managed a neat double-around off Tana Umaga to slip through for a crucial try. His conversion closed the game to within a point of the home side.

Then Gopperth, Jason Spice and Umaga took the ball up to the shadow of the Taranaki posts to earn a penalty which Gopperth goaled for the lead heading into the final quarter.

Wellington settled victory in the final minutes when Spice put in a sweetly placed grubber kick that had 'Naki fullback Brendan Watt under all sorts of pressure. Umaga and replacement Corey Jane bundled him into the ingoal and then Jane stripped him of the ball for the try.

The Lions forwards were still struggling to provide a solid attacking platform though and their scrum was under plenty of pressure from Taranaki.

Yet in the end they were able to come away with a win through the strike power of their talented backline.

Taranaki were cruelly denied a bonus point by Jane's late steal and then try-scoring machine Lome Fa'atau rubbed salt into their wounds with a touchdown by the posts on the final whistle as the Lions counter-attacked from deep in their own territory.

Wellington 30: Jimmy Gopperth, Corey Jane, Lome Fa'atau tries, 3 con, 3 pen.

Taranaki 14: Matt Harvey try; Miah Nikora 3 pen.

Sunday Cup Wrap: Southland produced a solid all round game to comfortably beat Northland 36-21 in the Air New Zealand Cup game in Whangarei.

Playing off a steady supply of quality ball from the hard-working pack, Southland edged ahead slowly.

They then ran away with the match in the fourth quarter when they scored three tries in quick succession with Dion Bates' intercept effort the heartbreaker for the home side.

Northland contributed plenty to an entertaining match but their fruitless run at the top level has now entered a fourth season where they are still looking for a win.

Most of the statistics were fairly even but it was Southland's ability to take their opportunities that proved the difference and gave them a bonus point as well.

Northland surged on to attack to get the first points with a David Holwell penalty but from there Southland used good field position to lead 13-6 at the break.

That included an slicing run for an outstanding try by wing Pehi Te Whare off a lineout win.

The lineout was an area where Southland enjoyed a good advantage and locks Hoani Macdonald and Kane Thompson capped good games with tries.

At one stage Holwell had scored all his sides points, including a try off a determined burst to the line, to get the Taniwha back to 16-all early in the second spell.

But Southland really got stuck in from there. Skipper Clarke Dermody marshalled the mauls well and the solid stuff in the tight was complemented by some outstanding loose forward work from hale T-Pole.

Kendrick Lynn made some good runs from fullback for Southland while his opposite Hayden Taylor was the most incisive of the Northland backs where left wing Rene Ranger also stood out and enjoyed a consolation try late in the match.

But the most pleasing area for Southland probably lay in the halves where youngsters Adam Clarke and Blair Stewart look a promising combination.

Clarke, in for All Black halfback Jimmy Cowan, sent out some slick service and Stewart chose his options well and also landed 16 points with his boot.

Southland 36: Pehi Te Whare, Hoani Macdonald, Dion Bates, Kane Thompson tries; Blair Stewart 2 con, 4 pen.

Northland 21: David Holwell, Rene Ranger tries; con, 3 pen.

HT: 13-6

Yay for Northland!

Still maintaining their perfect IPC record.
It's now been 1400 days now since their last win (September 28, 2002 vs BoP).

That's a lot of depressing post-match speeches and, in an desperate effort to accentuate the positive, a lot of thanking the ladies for the plate.

edit:
They will win a couple this year, finally, but only because of the expanded format letting teams that are even worse than Northland to play in the top tier.
All about money, I guess. All about money.

It's also about trying to get more players playing at that level. They can regularly mix it with super 14 level players and occasionally all black players. The idea is that it brings more players into the mix.

Also the NZRU stands to lose a few million on this years Air NZ cup, so it can't really be about the money..

The money they may get might be from TV rights though, it might have been part of the new package.

Besides with all the bull i heard from the commentators the past 3 days it wouldn'st surprise me they have been asked to 'sell it' to the public.

Talk about giving new players in some provinces the chance to shine where as they couldn't before, bah!
Taranaki has lost a few players through retirement and other teams are blooding new players not because of the new format but becausw people move on.
All we see is 110-120 new players getting a higher level ut getting kicked week in week out.
The top teams were rusty in week one they will improve considerably more than the bottom 5 times.
Good on Counties, Manawatu and Tasman(Nelson/Marlborough) though.

Hearing Willie Losae Ian Jones and Pod Turner every day was ah kill me!

Also, the top teams are missing a shitload of their top players. Once the test season ends, we'll see a huge difference in the quality of the top vs bottom teams.

Some sort of better distribution of monies to the teams would help. All that will happen is you'll get good players snapped up by the top teams, leaving the bottom teams full of journeymen, has-beens and up-and-comers (who will soon up-and-go into a better paid position in a top team).
When I was living in Whangarei a few years back (ooohhh...nearly 5 now. Man I feel old), I knew one of the Northland props. He was only getting $800 a game, yet was playing against some guys who were on $5000+ a week.
In the end, he went overseas and picked up a better contract playing in England.
Thing that struck me was that he was never going to be good enough to get into the ABs (though he did have a year or two with the Blues in the Super 12), but he was a good standard against which new players could test themselves. In that, new talent could learn off him and knew what level they had to better in order to be considered Super 14 (or AB) material.
The NZRFU, with their obscene pay disparity, is causing guys like that to leave which is creating an even bigger gap between the have teams and the have-not teams.
Not good for NZ rugby, imo.

NORTH HARBOUR 33 TASMAN 27

North Harbour put in an erratic performance to eventually get past newcomers Tasman in a rollicking match in Blenheim.

Harbour scored five tries to three but had to hold off a gutsy comeback from New Zealand's newest province who did enough to earn themselves a deserved bonus point in defeat.

Harbour were at their unpredictable best to register a bonus point for four tries in just over half an hour.

That had them leading 26-3 at halftime and Tasman were staring at a major embarrassment.

The Makos then completely dominated the third quarter with replacement halfback Kahn Fotuali'i scoring the first try for the new union as he added real impetus and helped them sneak back to 26-13.

But Harbour regathered themselves to have Tusi Pisi scoring a good try to cap his night with 13 points and give the visitors some much-needed breathing space.

Harbour's earlier scoring efforts had been a real mix. Prop Adrian Donald was on the end of a sweeping team movement ignited by Anthony Tuitavake to score one try and Fijian wing Viliame Waqaseduadua used some individual brilliance to score another.

Big No 8 Francis Stowers made the most of his late addition to the back of the scrum in place of Nick Williams to notch a double.View larger image

Try for Viliame Waqasedudua
©Getty Images / Ross Land

Tasman's spirit was evident as they look to establish themselves at this level and when replacement Peter Playford got a try off the charge down by Tim Taylor to get Tasman back to 20-33 he breathed some real life into the final 10 minutes.

Tasman were helped when Harbour prop Mike Noble was sin-binned for an ugly punching incident as Tasman stood up to any physical challenge that was thrown at them.

With Harbour down to 14 men the Makos nabbed the bonus point when another replacement Tristan Moran scored a good counter-attacking try and Gollings added the extras to get Tasman within seven of last year's beaten first division finalists.

Harbour's experience - on top of their first half dynamics - got them home to mean all six visiting sides won their opening round matches of the new championship.

But Harbour only just managed that in the end.

Tasman showed that they might not be disgraced in this tournament. They have some good loose forwards in Mark Bright and Cory Holdaway and England No 10 Ben Gollings directed them around the park well and also kicked his goals to keep the Makos in touch.

Perhaps the first half was just a bit of stage fright and the second half was a sign of things to come from the top of the South Island.

North Harbour 33: Francis Stowers 2, Viliame Waqaseduadua, Tusi Pisi tries; Pisi 4 con.

Tasman 27: Kahn Fotuali'i, Peter Playford, Tristan Moran tries; Ben Gollings 3 con, 2 pen.

HT: 26-3.

Wellington needed a try at the death from wing Corey Jane to break a deadlock and snatch a lucky 11-6 win over Bay of Plenty in the Air New Zealand Cup match in the capital on Friday night.

The Steamers came away with a bonus point but deserved better. The 6-all scoreline that held until the 79th minute when Jane struck, was a fairer reflection of a bumbling match.

Jerry Collins provided the impetus for a last-minute drive that freed the ball left to Jane who squirted over out wide to score the only try of a dfull match.

Talent-stacked Wellington were hugely relieved to come away with their second win of the new championship.

This was a game characterised by a high number of turnovers with the Steamers getting 27 and Wellington 19 as the errors mounted. There was some sloppy passing, plenty of poor handling and some pressure defence from both sides.

It all added up to a match that had no continuity to it and left the good-sized crowd of 20,000 left to entertain themselves for much of the time as Wellington punters are more than happy to do.

Wellington played a conservative approach early on, looking to go to the touchlines or keep the all close into their pack.

But that played into the hands of the Steamers who have a solid set of forwards full of Chiefs experience. Locks Bernie Upton and Mark Sorenson were in the thick of it all.

Both sides were guilty of plenty of aimless kicking and Bay of Plenty were well served at the back by fullback Mike Delaney who had a good positional game.

They also had a lively second five-eighths in Jeffrey Ierome who made a couple of rare breaks in the first spell while halfback Jamie Nutbrown was into everything.

Reward

There weren't many high spots for Wellington although Jane's try was reward for a lively performance from the sevens star.

Conrad Smith made his comeback from injury, coming off the Wellington bench after 50 minutes but couldn't spark anything for the Lions.

His return offset the loss of captain Tana Umaga at halftime with a finger injury.

Bay of Plenty opened the scoring with an early penalty from Murray Williams.

Jimmy Gopperth evened the ledger for the Lions. They each missed goals as well with the first half meandering along to the break at 3-all.

There was no addition for the next quarter in a fair reflection of a muddling attacking game from both teams. The defences applied plenty of pressure and held fast.

Williams put the Steamers ahead but just as quickly Gopperth got one back for the Lions to level things again at 6-all.

Wellington were awarded a penalty in the shadow of the Steamers' posts with eight minutes left . They turned down the shot at goal and went for a lineout to set up an attack that proved fruitless.

In the end they had Jane save their embarrassment when he was given a bit of space down the left touchline and scored from close range.

Chris Masoe had a busy debut for Wellington but not even some strong surges from the buslting All Blacks loose forward in the second half could get much momentum going for the Lions.

Nili Latu and Tanerau Latimer did a good job of frustrating Wellington at the breakdowns but it was the Steamers who ended up the most frustrated with the result as they had a deserved draw snatched away from them.

Wellington 11: Corey Jane try; Jimmy Gopperth 2 pen

Bay of Plenty: Murray Williams 2 pen.

HT: 3-3.

Corey Jane, Shannon Paku and Conrad Smith really stood out in a pathetic game of Rugby.
OMG RANDOM!
Show me a "coward" and I'll show you someone who simply doesn't know themselves yet. Inside every "coward" is a hero waiting for the necessary circumstances.

Bay of Plenty is a cool name. That's my best contribution I'm afraid.
