Grassing?

Who hates/hates snitches at school? In the workplace? The majority I assume.

Hence, I put a question to you; why do people report threads and posts to mods?

because they like the power trip...

i dunno really, maybe they feel its their duty to follow the rules no matter what

A poll would be interesting, if you feel like adding one.

Myself, I don't necessarily have a problem with "snitches." There are plenty of cases in which the appropriate action is to take a grievance to one's superior, or to another authority.

Some people do it because they are annoying tattle-tales. Other people do it out of genuine concern, be it misplaced or not. Still others do it because they have no patience for trolls/flamers. I'm sure there are yet more reasons which I am not thinking of.

2. The morons never expect that their misdeeds will be reported, thus they're always shocked.

Some are thin skinned pussies who get easily offended. (Now I mean that in the best possible way and with all due respect. Nobody report me to the mods.)

Some want to be mods themselves or just like to exercise mod-like powers.

Some are using moderation to get at posters they don't like.

Some folks are actually helping to make this forum better by helping the mods remove blatantly offensive flames and trolling that carry no redeeming value.

When I started high school, I was extremely academic, read for fun and was not at all interested in sports.

However, people quickly learned that I had something on everyone.

From what I've seen, it's usually a lame attempt at having someone you dislike banned.

grassing is pretty low. i can't think of a good reason for grassing unless there was an actual crime committed and i didn't know the person, therefore feeling no personal loyalty to them, and they were clearly guilty and their actions could not be excused by circumstances and i could actually be a key witness.

good list

plus it pisses off some people to see that someone else is getting away with something that they were repremanded for. even though they completely disagree with the rule and the ruling against them, they report it.

i find this extremely childish.

There is one hell of a difference between snitching and going too far. I know of one or two NSers can be quite aggressive. And while I have never reported them because I enjoy rattling them up even more (yes I'm awful I know) it can be a bit much at times.

Because it's the only way to ensure a civilised forum?

The idea of a 'lovable rogue' is absurd, so I'll reverse the question; why do you feel the need to support people who are mucking up the place for everyone else?

In that situation I feel people are petty and utterly anal when it comes to grassing on threads that are harmless. (obviously quite annoyed since her first and most awesome thread was brutally ended) ahem :)

If the thread however has become violent or in any way totally offensive to other people and a mod hasnt noticed then of course it should be reported. I'd report it in that instance.

If your job is to be a supervisor or to judge things in certain ways then of course the need to report back certain things is part of that job. It's all down to being able to judge things like honest mistakes, genuine people and knowing when to step over a line because somethings not right.

I would 'grass' in certain situations, but on here...it does seem pointless.

Rant over :p

Your thread had reached about 2,000 posts, all of it spam. I suggested you didn't do it again and received insults and unpleasantness in response. If you find it 'anal' to be told about these things before you're warned for doing them, that really is up to you.

I wasn't after a lecture. I realise you obviously take things quite seriously, and thats cool, each to their own. I haven't insulted you and I don't lecture you about how to do things. If I do something wrong and get banished for it, then I've learnt my lesson! The thing that made me quite angry about it all...was that my thread was harmless. It didnt insult anybody, it was merely chat. Nothing in there would have provoked anyone to be angry, upset and to be fair, it welcomed anyone to be included. How better to get to know people.

Lets end this here, I've said all I wanted to, and don't particularly want to drag this up again...

I'm not trying to get at you personally. But this is a stupid thread in the first place; we all come to this forum because we like it and enjoy being on it. Trying to help keeping it running smoothly is nothing to do with 'power trips' or 'being anal', it is making sure a minority of idiots don't ruin it for the majority.

I sure there are some to whom it is a power trip and for malicious reasons 'cos they got trolled by someone, so they feel they have to get back at them the only way they can. Mods have a lot to do, so to increase their workload in the above situation (troll retaliation) is out of line.

I used to be a research manager many years ago and the girl who's job I took over got promoted and was my boss. It turned out that the entire time I was there she had one of my staff reporting everything I did to her and those higher. She was a control freak and didn't want to let go of her post, and the end of the day we all just want to go to work, have stress free days, go home and get paid. I HATE the both of them for this, I consider it to be a great betrayal. I find it highly amusing that the company was closed down and they all lost their jobs! ;)

The only moderation narcs that annoy me are the ones that are in there day after day. It's like they're so bored that they are on a violation treasure hunt. Those guys also seem to be the biggest brown nosers too. It's like they're campaigning for a moderator position. It is really quite unseemly and disgusting.

Boredom.

I dunno.

I've been reported a time or two. I kinda like the attention. Also, sometimes it gives me a few days off from the forums to go clean my gutters and tend to my garden and whatnot.

You can always tell when I need some time off by the way I get deliberately reported.

Why report someone? Well, I don't. If I see a thread that annoys me, I just ignore it.

As for why others do it - well, this being a virtual meeting hall, there's no practical way to take someone outside for a good ass-kicking when they deserve one. Which some people here certainly do. (Names will not be named.) With physical violence not being an option, and the threat of physical violence being laughable under the circumstances, the only option they have to silence someone is to have the mods do it.

Of course, if you pay no attention to someone, they can babble whatever ridiculous opinions they like, and they won't disturb you at all. Works for me. :p

2: They're gonna have to go some to find anything that I would be offended by! ;)

That's your opinion. As it was your opinion that Peeland's thread MIGHT be in violation of spam standards.

You're not one of those drivers who does the speed limit in the passing lane to teach others a lesson are you?

I respect and agree with your desire for the rule of law, but save the arbitration for the arbiters. If it MIGHT be something, mention it in the thread, but going off to the mods for every possibility gets tiresome.

That said, I've reported perhaps three threads/people in my 16 months here, and each one was seeking confirmation from a Mod about whether or not something was afoul of a rule, not demanding the Mod do anything. I ask the Mods because I want to know what the standards are from the point of view of those enforcing them, not because I enjoy "grassing" (what's the derivation of that slang term, and what happened to "ratting"?). That way, I can post a warning without needing to go to the Mods and also learne when I'm in danger of stepping over a line myself.

Actually, it was the Mods, otherwise it wouldn't have been moved.

You're not one of those drivers who does the speed limit in the passing lane to teach others a lesson are you?
Again, you take the assumption that there is some sort of 'holier than thou' attitude at play here. I don't understand the hostility of people towards the Mods, nor why they feel the need to defend rule breakers. Or perhaps you're 'one of those people' who feels that spamming and trolling is 'fun' and that this forum should be nothing but pages of 'OMG you're so evil!' 'No, OMG, YOU'RE evil!!!!!!'

I respect and agree with your desire for the rule of law, but save the arbitration for the arbiters. If it MIGHT be something, mention it in the thread, but going off to the mods for every possibility gets tiresome.
Why should problems not be raised? You don't seem to agree with the desire for the rule of law at all; if you did, you would not question the need for Moderation, or throw such a hissy fit when rule breaking is reported.
