The French have lost their collective mind.

The scorching weather this summer has generated a boom in ice-cream sales in France - and a colourful explosion of exotic and bizarre flavours.

Lovers of ice-cream can now eat glaces that taste of grass or are flavoured with mustard, Roquefort cheese or oysters.

Ok, maybe they haven't gone crazy, but they're certainly eating some weird crap. Grass flavored ice cream? Oyster flavor? That can't be good. Grass isn't even a food. How about rat anus and crushed glass flavor? Now doesn't that sound appetizing.

I'll stick with coffee, chocolate, mint and various types of fruit, thank you very much.

The Link's broken. But when I went to Japan, I had the most high tech ice-cream in my life! The ice-cream was more like an ice-cream bar fused with an ice-cream cone. It was square, and the outside was like the cone, and the inside had the ice-cream. This meant it wouldn't melt, and your fingers wouldn't get sticky. Truly marvelous ice-cream engineering.

Kopi Luak, or "cat shit" coffee, drives the Nipponeese wild. The Luak is a small cat-like creature that eats ripe coffee cherries right off the tree, digests the flesh but poops the beans out whole. Somehow the fermentation undergone in the animal's stomach makes the final cleaned and roasted coffee beans taste really really good. This stuff sells for $100 per pound and is woofed down by the gallon in places like Japan and Sumatra. These guys can quaf cat ka-ka all they like, fricking wierdos.

We can, we just choose not to and make allowances for a small amount of inevitable bug consumption which will occur due to unintentional contamination.

Yeah, that's not the best pic to convey suzume. Unfortunately I don't have any of my own, and can't find any righ off the bat. The glaring outstanding feature is the great big eye ball staring back at you....

But that's not hardly the strangest thing here. Fermented salted fish is (at least for me) a lot more out there.

I wasn't overly keen on that dried fish stuff, I can't remember it's name but it was really thin and looked like it was alive when it move in the air currents of the room.

Is it bad that I think the garlic ice cream sounds promising. Perhaps with a little chocolate sauce... mm...

So does the sesame, soybean and kelp ice cream. The silk ice cream sounds interesting too, I don't know about tasty.

And the Stout ice cream, red wine ice cream and liquor ice creams sound very promising. As do the tulip and cherry blossom ones...

Ok, I'm a weirdo. (or just adventurous with food... although I draw the line at the meat flavours)

Recently, I watched a documentary on History Channel about snack foods. The way they got the vomit flavored jelly bean was NOT by trying to create one.

They tried to do pepperoni pizza some years back and it failed the taste test miserably. Testers likened it to -- you see where I'm going, don't you?

Anyhow, with the first Harry Potter movie coming out, they unretired the failed flavor and relabeled it as vomit.

(OMG, I really am a repository for utterly useless knowledge!)
