That video/picture series is soooo creepy. What made Bush think that would be okay? I mean, it's something I used to do around people I was already very familiar and comfortable with and who were the same way with me. I don't care how "informal" Bush likes to be, it was an international summit meeting, not a church retreat.

And did you see the look on Merkel's face? Yikes!

Feminists went mad when they saw it.

"Another sign of male chauvinism/disrespect of a female in charge."

(They kinda have a point- bet he wouldn't go and smack Putin on the ass while walking by.)

Slight difference.

Merkel isn't 8 years old.
She is, however, the leader of one of the world's ecomonic powerhouses.

So long as the feminists don't get shrill about it, they'll have an excellent point. I didn't see Bush go down the row and rub every leader's shoulder, just the woman.

Now that you mention it, though, what d'ya think Putin would do if Bush made a similarly far-too-friendly physical gesture? Blair would just smile and let it happen, probably up to and including sodomy. What about Putin, though?

When taken with everything else Bush did at that summit*, I wonder what was going through his mind.
Was it a delibrate attempt to show total lack of respect to the other leaders in G8? As a way of proving US superiority and thus seek to alienate the rest of the world from them?

Or (imo) just further proof that GWB has the maturity and thinking of a boorish immature 14 yr old bully who was forced to attend a grown-ups party which he didn't want to go to and so went round being as churlish and contumelious as possible.
Surely someone to look up to. You must be proud, America.

*in case you don't know, here's a few of the things he did:
Grope Chancellor Merkell

Mutter, quite audibly, about how long and boring the other country leader's speeches were.

Again showed his ignorance of the world outside the US by telling the Chinese premier that “This is your neighborhood, doesn’t take you long to get home.” (the G8 summit was held in St Petersburg). When informed that it's an 8+ hour flight, he appeared surprised, “You, eight hours? Me too. Russia’s a big country and you’re a big country,”. Wow. Great bit of geographical knowledge there. China and Russia. They're both BIG countries. I've learnt something new. Thanks GWB.

Moaned about not being able to have McDs for lunch (again near an open mike)

During lunch, and with an open mike, talked with his mouth open and said, "they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit" (best thing to do there - there's no way that the Arab world would take that the wrong way: Using Hizbollah, Syria and shit in the same sentence. Good job there's so much goodwill in the Middle East at present). Great grasp of ME politics there too.
The most ironic thing here is that no American station could broadcast him saying it, because of a bill he had recently signed whereby they'd be liable for a $350000 fine for broadcasting an obscenity (the list included 'shit').

Yelled out, "Yo, Blair!" upon seeing him (very appropriate and respectful way to address the leader of another country there)

Finally, here's a clip for those too lazy to watch:

Wow. Just...wow.

And yet I KNOW the NeoCon spinmeisters are going to praise Bush for being so "true to himself", "honest", "folksy", and/or not concerned with all the diplomatic nonsense like respect and consideration. I knew the rest of the world had legitimate cause to dislike my country, but seeing W in action makes those reasons very clear.

It's nitpicky ad-hominem whininess like this that forces our politicians to be faceless spin-meisters, instead of letting their people know what it is that is going through their heads.

At least it was Merkel, I cant imagine it going any better with any of the other G8 leaders.

If he did that to Blair the British tabloids would have a field day.

If he did it to Koizumi...I'm not entirely familiar with Japanese society but I'm willing to wager being groped by the President of the United States at a G8 summit is Seppuku worthy.

If he did it to Putin, Bush would get Judo Tossed across the room.

and worst of all if he did it to Chirac he probably would have enjoyed it.

Pffft. And people asked before the election in Germany "Is Germany ready for a female Chancellor?"

They should've asked "Is the world ready for a female Chancellor?"

First Chirac not knowing whether to kiss or shake the hand, then the bathing suit photos in the British press, now this. Bloody hell people, look at her! It's not like she looks particularly womanly anyways!

(Bush was actually in Delta Kappa Epsilon. Another Web 2.0 truism: Blogs are not always friendly with the facts.)"

WTH do they just google every thing they read in the paper or other news networks and then site random people? Can anyone with a myspace be considered a "writer"? And why are they nit picking his analogy? its like "Bush was like an uncaged wild cat" ( In fact, Bush is not nor has ever been a wild cat, his species at birth was Human)

Do you really think GWB's boorish behaviour in full view of the cameras at a meeting with seven other leaders of the most powerful nations on Earth, at a time there's significant (if not major) international crises* abound, is appropriate?

You honestly believe that swearing, talking with your mouth full, showing no respect to leaders of other nations and groping one of them on camera is really appropriate?

Further, can you really claim that his clownish and immature antics were designed to build rapport (gee you really think Merckell will have a better, more positive opinion of him now) or rather the bumblings of an immature oaf?
Based on his previous behaviour, I know which one I'm plumping for.

I'm sorry, but there's a difference between off-the-record behavior and undue familiarity. I have no problem with the "stop doin' that shit" line because, open mikes or not, they were at lunch. Nominally a guard-down kind of time. But it isn't "bowing and scraping" to know not to treat another world leader like your girlfriend.

I hope you're being sarcastic there.
Otherwise...eww

*Four countries in the ME alone are in a state of war and two other countries with dubious, to say the least, commitments to world peace and stability are determined to manufacture nuclear weapons regardless of world opinion. And let's not forget what's happening in the African subcontinent.
Yeah, that's my biggest problem with the whole thing. He's there representing ME. My country, US citizens. I'm sick of being considered maladroit by association.

You know, as terrible a president bush is, he doesnt seem like bad guy. Just kinda clueless. I'd have a beer with him any day.
EXACTLY. I'd want to have a beer with him, but I didn't want him as president. I got no beef with Bush the man -- we all must be ourselves. Bush the politician, however....

Brillent, I've looked everywhere and none of the links work! A little inappropriate. And Bush was feeding her pork on another visit. Has Bush found his Monica?

I thought Merkel was smarter than that!

If he did it to Putin, Bush would get Judo Tossed across the room.

and worst of all if he did it to Chirac he probably would have enjoyed it.

how about chirac? Bush could have ended it with a kiss on the head.

She's married.

Anyways...I find it amazing how little research foreign leaders do when they meet her. Kohl once called her "his girl"...she was one of the major characters bringing about his downfall. She killed off so many big names in the CDU - precisely because people keep underestimating her.

But then, I'd be surprised if Bush could tell me who Helmut Kohl was.

Does anyone have a link for this? It was supposed to be quite funny but any of the links I have found on you.tube don't work. Little help?
Bush is a stud, from Condi to Merkel.

I think the whole mistreatment is common amoung female politicans. Blair intruduced Mo Mowlam as his tea lady.

Like Christina Aguelera!:p
Oh, she can rub me alright.
Wow.
I go to work for 15 hours and Bush gives a German leader a backrub? Wow.
Was she a hottie?
No. She's the German chancellor. Picture-google for "Merkel" [but you have been warned!!!]
From the look on her face, I'm going with, "Ew ew ew. Why is that halfwit touching me? Ugh. Stop it. EW."
I believe you're reading her facial expressions just right!

Paris Hilton, only because I fear for my physical integrity.

Other way round. It's her whose physique might fall into pieces (of plastic).
