The Most Wonderful Time of the Week.

...Okay so I'm standing by the rear exit doors on the westbound streetcar heading in to another week of work. Woman in designer gear, carrying a large purse, a gym bag and two pricey shopping bags is standing across from me in the aisle leading up to the rear exit.

An older man in a mohair suit is trying to politely move past this woman to exit, using the hushed tones of the seasoned commuter. Rather than step out of the way, or even try moving her bags out of the way, she stands her ground and intones impetuously, "the reason you're having trouble is that the streetcar is crowded - so shut your mouth".

A quick glance around myself told the story - collectively, we were not amused. But this is Toronto, and everybody (well, most everybody) is too damn polite to say anything. Well, except me that is.

I had a hunch she'd be taking the subway north once we crossed Yonge St, and sure enough she moved herself eight inches to the right in order to position herself for a rapid egress. As we pulled up to the stop, I said pointedly (if pleasantly) "The streetcar might not be so crowded if you didn't cart half your closet around with you during rush hour, dear".

This garnered much amusement from my fellow commuters, who began opining that perhaps she needed the gym bag to pack her makeup trowel, amongst other things.

Mondays may not be the happiest time of the week, but watch out - you get out of it whatever you put into it, good or bad. And if you're being a prat around Dobbsy, expect to have it thrown right back atcha, kids.

What an absolutely self-centred and bloggish anecdote. I want my minute back!

Meh, I'd probably just squander it anyway...

well done dobbsy, you made fun of someone being a prat.

i don't like inconsiderate people too much (the lady), but nor do i particularly like mouthy people who have to put others down to get kicks. but meh, i'll stop talking before i become hypocritical ;)

Well, there's still no reason to be needlessly unpleasant on a crowded streetcar during the Monday morning rush-hour, no matter how cranky one might feel.

This isn't lost on the vast majority of commuters. That's why it's usually quiet as a tomb, even when you're shoulder-to-shoulder. And that's why a timely retort given to a rude person can be so... rewarding.

I like how you can formulate a traditional event in a day into a simple post to remind people that humans are evil, sadistic beings who need guidance by a divine diety, such as myself.

She broke the unwritten 'politeness' rule on the TTC. She had it coming!

Hooray for snarky comments!

Canadians being slightly rude.

It begins to spread northward then. Pretty soon you'll be having road rage that rivals our New York and Massachusetts people.

Ahh, another T.O. commuter methinks? Let's face it, if you're cooped up with a bunch of strangers twice a day, every day, politeness is just about the only thing keeping everything together. Rudeness might as well be a monogrammed invitation to impromptu street-theatre... with yourself centre-stage, hence why we all tend to avoid it.

But once the curtain rises, watch out - there's a wealth of capable performers just waiting in the wings...

And yep, she certainly did have it coming.

I've been through the commute grind lot's of times, although never on the TTC. I've heard all the stories. I'll keep working out on the fringes, it's safer.

Meh, living and working downtown is perfectly safe - if more crowded. I can't hack the suburbs, though... something just seems plain wrong when the trees are the tallest things around.

Make mine urban.

Yeah, you can keep the hustle and bustle of TO. I deal with it for work everyday (My company does most of it's business in TO).

I love the 'Shwa. We get the worst of both worlds; the countrified mullet-sporting hicks combined with the crack epidemic downtown core. It's a pleasure driving up Simcoe every day just to point out all the crazies.

Simcoe Street? In Toronto?

I work on Peter Street - Peter and Adelaide. Small world.

And yeah, there's all sorts of crazies roaming around. That's why I ride the TTC, mostly. If I walk to work I get panhandled more than a dozen times along the way.

No, Simcoe in Oshawa. I have trucks going all over TO though, and move a lot of the office building in the downtown core.
