Heat, like any northeastern city, is something that fluctuates horribly. And yes, driving in Boston is just terrible. However their public transportation system is actually pretty damned solid, there's a T or bus stop nearly everywhere, polution and crime are actually pretty low for a city its size, and anyone who knows my particular political leanings should know that Boston fits quite well with my philosophies.

I flew in to Boston about 6 years ago. Traffic was a bitch coming out of Logan but the city looked nice from what we could see on the highway; of course, the traffic was caused by the lack of and (at the time) ongoing construction of the Big Dig so I can't really judge it now.

I like old cities with a lot of history, so that's also a plus.

the public transport system is great...just don't get a Charliepass...they aren't fully functional yet.

Driving isn't that bad once you get used to it...but for a short visit...stick to public transport and rent a car for day trips.

The Constitution does turn-arounds alot lately, so if you're willing to cough up the dough, you can go on the ship as it gets hauled around the inner harbor. But the best day to see Old Ironsides is on the 4th when the go out to Castle Island (the one with the fort that isn't an island anymore) and watch it as it fires a 21 gun salute. :) And if you are as far down as DC, don't Amtrak it. Don't. (worst 8 hours of my childhood).

Boston was mayhem when I went a few years ago with the road works...however the Sox won against the Yankees whilst I was in town so there was a bloody good atmosphere :D

Nice city overall...went on USS Constitution too, utterly awesome ship and the revere and respect which it is given makes it a special place to go. Needless to say, as Brits, there was a bit of good hearted banter between us and the tour group we were with :D But it was great place to visit. Have fun when you eventually get there Kat!

One slight downer on the whole thing was meeting some Boston Irish in a bar who weren't very happy to see some Brits around  was quite wierd really. I can't remember in what area we were...but we didn't hang around much.

Still, on my list of cities, Boston is pretty high up. Really want to go back once all the works done ;)
