Ok Here is my latest attempt at a thread and a poll. I'm hoping it isn't so miserably horrible as to get single digit responses and sink away or to be SO horrendously bad that Kanabia feels compelled to do it RIGHT. The latter happened last time so I may be asking for too much but here goes.

Ok I do genetic counseling and some genetic research. At the moment we can't do much of what is in the poll but its only a matter of time. So would you want to use this service? Naturally the people I see at work are in favor but what about the rest of you? I've tried to graduate the options on the poll and make sure they are clear. I've even got a joke option! Still Its all probably horribly done so please make allowances for how badly I suck at this and vote in the poll anyway.

I am more than slightly puzzled by your claim that we will soon be able to modify the genetic information (and its consequences) in adults. How is this likely to be done?

(I voted for a superbaby - but that just means super-potential as I see it. The child will still require to brought up correctly to make use of its genetic potential.)

I didn't say soon just some day. I would say retrovirus would be the way to go to modify adult DNA but its still a ways down the road. The kid options are closer.

I'm all for it! To heck with designer kids, though--I want to recode *my own* DNA!

I know there's years of research ahead, but here's what I'd like when it becomes possible:

Short version, in a sentence: Recode my DNA to God Mode = On, please.

In detail: Specifically the GM facets which would pertain to RL. I'd like to dump aging (beyond regular growing up) and disease, and add these useful new abilities:

MUCH greater and faster metabolic adaptability. So that if I eat 10,000 calories/day, my metab. just speeds way up and burns off the extra. But if a famine happens, it slows down so that 1 blade of grass or equivalent is enough food. And it NEVER gets stuck. It immediately adapts to whatever the conditions are at the time. There'd be a bit of variability left for vanity's sake, but not so much that either extreme becomes a problem.

Uber physical capabilities, way more than good enough to make Olympic athletes look like hopelessly unfit couch potatoes if they dared to compete against me rather than hide behind "gene doping" regulations.

Intelligence Up. 100x smarter than Einstein at least.

Much greater tolerance to physical injury. Bullets could be like mosquito bites...just an annoyance.

It'd be nice to be able to breathe underwater, or at least be able to hold my breath a looooonnggg time, as an innate ability. I know pearl divers can hold their breath for several minutes, but that takes practice.

Immunity to harmful effects from smoking and other things of that nature.

Much greater tolerance to cold, humidity, and other lousy weather that currently causes me misery.

It seems like, with this technology, that it would be so simple to creat an Uber-Race of super humans...a perfect "Aryan" people.

I dont like it, if technology like this falls into the wrong hands, then we would all have to just sit and watch while some tool genetically engineers himself a super race.

First off. I am thinking wings. Big, Baddass wings. And a tail. The end of the tail could like unfold into something similar to a whale's tail then fold up like a dogs. The skeleton would keep the same basic design, but be made of a much stronger substance. This would slim-up and lighten up the master race, making flight much easier. The face would recieve some reworking. It would remain noticable human, but be better adapted for flight. This could just be an adjustment in the neck and how the spine connects to the skull. Wolverine-style claws are a must also. These could have pre-existing openings, instead of breaking the skin every time.

That's about all I got so far.

to answer the question... i don't really know. if everyone (or most in society) i'd have to go for the superbaby option. if not then i'd be more happy with screening out genetic diseases in embryos and using genetic research (and cloning and stem cell stuff, why not) to find new treatments for adult diseases - genetic or otherwise.

i'm not sure why i have a problem with the superbaby idea. a part of me has some kind of moral objection i can't identify, part of me thinks "tampering with nature" to that extent isn't wise when we can't know the long-term outcome of those actions (as well as biologically shrinking the gene-pool and decreasing diversity), and there's a part of me that wasnts my child to be my child as much as possible

I think even now they can screen embryos for certain genes. If the embryo has an 'undesirable' gene, the parents can choose to either have it aborted or prepare for the birth of the child.

I am asking because I have a gene that passes, it will pass to every child I have and they will pass it to every child they have, that causes a disease, it passes 90% of the time, it causes the disease 75% of the time, I don't want my grandkids to have the disease my girls and I do, and I also don't want my girls to go through having to kill 90% of the children they conceive. That's why I ask if there will ever be a way to keep the gene from passing or if it does have to pass is there a way to make it not "activate" the disease.

Bah! Statistics. They may not have to abort that many, or maybe more. And I think they are still developing gene therapy techniques. Unsure if they can/are permitted to try it on the human genome yet, though. I imagine they'll be able to do it sometime relatively soon, if they can't already.

Not so distant future as you might imagine. There have been huge leaps in this research in the last twenty-five years. The only thing that would really slow it is the damned red tape.

I don't see how we can prevent the development of genetic manipulation, nor do I necessarily think that we should. However, this entire area resembles Pandora's box closely enough that we need to control it with obsessive care. Compared to genetic manipulation, creation of the hydrogen bomb was child's play.

Genetic change in humans should be limited to the eptification of the existing genome, as should gentic manipulation of all other living things. To do otherwise is to risk releasing uncontrolled and unpredictable change into the environment. Putting the genie back into the bottle is an impossible task.

We can do that. We can even look at your genetic chart and your spouses and tell if there are any REALLY bad combinations possible. We can't prevent them from being passed on during intercourse but if you both come in and donate sperm/ova then we can insure that the baby you have is free from those if thats possble given your charts. If its not then we can give you options such as sperm donors, egg donors (much less likely and less used),
and good old fashioned adoption.

Yeah making a gene not activate regardless is awhile off but closer every day. If you want brochures I can send them detailing exactly wht we can do for your girls. I'll even donate my time for free to you. Sadly this won't make the whole procedure free but it should help.

Ok Here is my latest attempt at a thread and a poll. I'm hoping it isn't so miserably horrible as to get single digit responses and sink away or to be SO horrendously bad that Kanabia feels compelled to do it RIGHT. The latter happened last time so I may be asking for too much but here goes.

Ok I do genetic counseling and some genetic research. At the moment we can't do much of what is in the poll but its only a matter of time. So would you want to use this service? Naturally the people I see at work are in favor but what about the rest of you? I've tried to graduate the options on the poll and make sure they are clear. I've even got a joke option! Still Its all probably horribly done so please make allowances for how badly I suck at this and vote in the poll anyway.

It seems like, with this technology, that it would be so simple to creat an Uber-Race of super humans...a perfect "Aryan" people.

I dont like it, if technology like this falls into the wrong hands, then we would all have to just sit and watch while some tool genetically engineers himself a super race.

But I am constantly aggravated by my physical limitations. And, I HATE the very idea of aging to death. Aging as it currently works means no matter what you do, in the end you get pwned. Getting age-related breakdown along the way adds insult to injury.

As for the Intelligence Up, I'm already intelligent (IMO), but I'd like to be able to understand more, and understand subjects which currently elude me.

I am unhappy enough with those things, that I would absolutely recode it. To me, my DNA is a config file: Something to edit to suit me! Definitely not something to idolize.

It surprises and baffles me that anyone would NOT want to recode at least a few things other than basic disease-fixing.

well i don't like the environmental risks invoulved in corporatocracy controled genetic modification of food stocks. but as for a genetic makeover, into something say a little furrier, like with pointed ears and a long floofy prehensile tail, kitty ears and eyes, but and even bigger and larger capacity brain, not a smaller one, retractable claws i could climb trees and telephone poles with, yes these would be very nice. maybe an extra set of thumbs on the opposide of my palms from the existing ones, like a red panda has only fully funcitional, and a couple of extra finger inbetween so i could count in hexidecimal on my fingers.

and some really psychodellic stripey patterns in my fur too.

I don't think nuclear warheads were worth the reactors. An army of genetically enhanced soldiers wouldn't necessarily be a good thing either. And I think we should try to slow research down a bit until we're wise enough to see the fruits of the endeavor. We always do otherwise and rush through just to make sure we get done before someone else *gasp* discovers/makes it first. Things like this shouldn't be rushed nor taken lightly.

Most of the diseases Bumboat has mentioned have been of topic in the discussion and again, most people agreed that trying not to have kids grow up with those diseases would be an improvement.
