You mean you were driving inside the tornado? It must not have been very powerful or you would have been dead.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

THERE IS A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE ENTIRE
AREA TODAY. DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL ARE THE MAIN
THREATS...WITH SIGNIFICANT WIND DAMAGE POSSIBLE DUE TO THE LARGE
AMOUNT OF INSTABILITY AND WIND SHEAR IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BEGIN MOVING INTO THE
AREA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST
MISSOURI...SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA. THE THREAT FOR
THUNDERSTORMS WILL MOVE SOUTH ACROSS THE REST OF THE AREA LATER
THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING.

I have heard of two or three...one confirmed, the other two they are not certain about though. This was seriously the scariest storm i have seen hit this town..clouds swirling and everything. they said the most abnormal thing was that the lighting was about 95% cloud to ground, and 5% cloud to cloud, meaning there was alot of energy.

The bad thing about it all, is that the storm hit hardest around the south part of town, the predominantly black and poorer area...Not good...There has always been racial tension here, im sure this will get ugly

Red Cross Shelter in Mt. Vernon
MT. VERNON, IL--
Severe weather blew through our area today . . . creating flooding, power outages, and problems for cars.

Thousands people are without power right now. 569,000 people are without power in the St. Louis area. No word from Ameren when the power could be restored.

The damage is extensive in the Mount Vernon area. Two semi trucks overturned on the I-57 and I-64 split before Mount Vernon. Cars were damaged and destroyed at Continental Tire. A car overturned at the Triple E Bar-b-que. Street lights are out; trees and power lines are down. The Mount Vernon Police Department is asking people to stay away form the damaged areas. There's a lot of wind damage and homes that have been damaged.

Other damages that we know of includes tranformer fires on Stotlar Road in Williamson County and on Orange Street in Freeman Spur.

Mcleansboro experienced down power lines and flooding.

DuQuoin has trees down, and power and cable out.

Christopher experienced trees down and roof damage.

The Red Cross is setting up a shelter at the Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon. The shelter will open at 5 p.m., and prove temporary overnight shelter and food.

The church is located at 301 North 10th Street in Mount Vernon.

Phbt, I had a tornado cut through my yard back in 2003. It did $10,000 in damage, and that was just for the trees we had to clean up. Luckily our house is sturdy as hell, so the house didn't have any damage. Trees were twisted at the tops like a giant had come in and taken them and just curled them all around. During the tornado, as we were running down to the basement, the doors all buckled in.

And the next morning I had to get up bright and early for my English AP test. Thanks a lot, College Board. Just have to have them all on the same day, don't you? I got a three T_T.

Dunno all you have to do is be outdoors and not too near bridges or brick buildings and you are pretty safe.

I was at LAX during the Northridge quake. It was cool because I was just outside some gargantuan hangar doors that fluttered and rattled. The best bit was watching the the earthquake waves go across the huge expanse of runways like it was an ocean.

A study I just completed reveals that leaving your top down in order to dry your car out and not putting it up before it starts to pour down rain is counterproductive. There are followup studies to conduct but the evidence is pretty conclusive.
