The 51st State of the USA

I only heard the term recently. Apparently it can mean several places, including my own country! So what does it mean to you? I need toi know the norm for this. Does the world think of Australia as the 51st state of the USA? :(

No. Maybe Puerto Rico.
The most probable guesstimate.
Maybe Puerto Rico. Or Guam

Puerto Rico, it's like Quebec, if Quebec seceded but still retained Canadian rights and got Canadian tax money.

It's England, even Tony Blair said so, with Scotland and Wales being 52nd and 53rd :D
Australia is only the way it is because of John "bend-over-and-do-what-you-want-with-me" Howard... Only problem is, there's no-one else better at the moment.

Aren't there other American Territories, particularly in the Pacific that would be in a similar position as Puerto Rico?
Growing up, everyone always referred to Canada as the 51st state. *shakes head*

There is Guam and American Samoa I think, but who lives there?

It all depends on what your definition. Theres countries that have governments amercia has chosen (iraq, afghanistan, most of south america) then there are places that are culturally almost identical (canada, britain, australia) and then there are places that are stupid enough to give them control over a large proportion of their military and do whatever the hell they want (britain)

*Exhales* Goodly. I was worried the world was like "Fuck you Australia, you American Bitches!" (Preferrably in Haxor-speak, but I don't have the effort required).

Does anyone remember the show "The Critic" when Duke Phillips was running for President? He was talking about the Guam primary, and said something along the lines of "Guambats, the Guamish, Guammie bears, what the hell do I call them?"

51st State? Wasn't that a film where Samuel L. Jackson wore a kilt and had a set of golf clubs with him throughout?

There won't be a 51st state until you can get a 52nd state at the same time. It's how they gerrymander the Senate. Think about it: Suppose Republicans have 51 seats in the Senate and Democrats have 49. Puerto Rico (as an example), solidly Democrat, is admitted. Suddenly Republicans and Democrats both have 51 seats. No party is going to give up its majority or even percentage of seats to share equally with the other party.
Now (to continue the example), if you found a 52nd state, one that would vote Republican to balance out the Democrats in Puerto Rico, then you'd have state admissions.

I saw an interesting report one time on the burgeoning economy and political influence of Canada, and it ended by asking, would Canada become part of the US, or would the US become part of Canada..?
Seriously, unification between the US and Canada is the only real likelihood, and that only in the mid-to-long term. Neither country wants to upset the very good status quo that exists today by rushing in to anything.
Puerto Rico; they practically run the place already

I don't want to find out for fear of it being something sensible, but could other alternatives be Guamitts, Guammoners, or Guammarians?
EDIT:
Ok, I had to look: Guamanians

well if its a territory why dont they just annex the place and get it over and done with, have Puerto rico and an Islands State (US Vigin Is, Guam, American Samoa [ignore the 1000's of miles gap between them])

Mexico, probably. Though, way things are going, maybe it'd be more accurate to say America is Mexico's 23rd state (IIRC the number of state/province divisions in Mexico, at least)

Because Puerto Rico has repeatedly voted NOT to be a state. In their current situation, they get US rights and privileges, such as Social Security, but pay ridiculously low taxes and have effective self government. The only thing they don't get is full congressional representation.

I keep hearing that Canada is be the fifty first state, but that is bullshit. If Canada is part of the US we still keep the province boundaries as state boundaries. This would mean that Canada is the 51st-64th states.

It was prior to the signing of FTA (and then NAFTA). The liberal line was that by signing the FTA, Canada would become the 51st state. (Accompanied with a commercial where the border between Canada and the US gets erased and redrawn back and forth between 2 politicians. The Conservatives won anyway. Go figure.)

You're always welcome to apply to join Confederation. We haven't had a new province join since Newfoundland. (Nunavut's a territory. Exciting and all, but we need some new provinces.)

Perhaps Iraq should be made a state (like the unnamed Pacific islands, probably the Philippines) in John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar. Then the insurgency could be called a direct attack on US soil and the Administration could go to town on them.

most likely it will be a current territory of the United States.
for more information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incorporated_territory#Classification_of_current_U.S._territories)
but keep thinking th unites states will turn some random country into another state
