So this guy i knew in HS, recently robbed a store at gun point, and was later arrested. He was released on bond, and from last i hear, he is getting his charges dropped, so he can join the navy..The thing is i thought you couldn't join the US armed sevices with a felony...but his dad does have money though...So anyways am I right about the felony and armed services thing?

It depends on the local prosecuting attorney.
Sometimes, in an agreement to join the service, minor charges can be dropped.

Armed robbery, though...thats pretty odd.

I know alternative sentencing is not entirely unsual, but with a felony crime, it seems a little...odd...

Same here. I've heard similar, but not involving something as serious as armed robbery.

As I thought. I wonder why exactly he is getting off? Perhaps because his dad is a wealthy man? I would think if it were a poor black man, rather than a white rich kid, this wouldn't be happening.

That releases another paradox: rich, white people joining the Army.

You said he's getting charges dropped, right? Then he's innocent. Nothing matters then, except eyesight specs.

You are right, you can't join the U.S. Armed Forces if you've been convicted of a felony. But if the individual was only charged, and the charges were dropped, then there's no conviction on record, so he's not a felon.

Even if he were, I've been in the U.S. Navy for a while, and I've seen my fair share of crazy stuff get waived.

I've heard of stuff like that. Doesn't really fill one with confidence, does it? I mean, here we've got somebody who committed armed robery...so let's stick him in the military, where he'll have access to all kind of weapons!

Fortunatly, if he gets caught stealing from his shipmates, he's liable to have a nasty 'fall'. :)

Is there anything that CAN'T be waived? I had more than a few scrapes with the law as a teenager and as a young man, up till about three years ago, but I'm in college now and working on a B.A. in math.

I heard something about how if you get a record sealed, the military sees straight through. Do they take into account the fact that it's sealed when granting waivers?

Just asking, I've wanted to join up for some time, but college's been pretty slow here. No clue what I'll do with a math degree in the military (any branch is fine with me as long as they take me) but I hear that any degree makes you far more promotable.

Is it right?

Depends on how badly the navy needs recruits.

I don't think we need to worry about him holding up a store at cruise missile-point.

From talking with veterans I've learned that math is useful in artillery, if I recall correctly.

"Sir, I have twenty-two dollars and thirty cents in here. The missile costs more than that."

"Shut up and give me the money!"

Not so unusual, some judges, depending on many factors, can sentence a person into military service as a way to teach them disipline.

it could be that the judge feels that the training and disicpline he will get in the navy would be better than jail time.

Yeah. I think you've been reading the CNN ticker way too much. I recently heard a survey that found out the majority of people joining the military after the start of the Iraq war were upper middle class white kids. Contrary to the theory that the military is just a blood mill for poor black kids.

Do you have any more info on this kid? Did he have a prior record? I new a guy in boot camp that had alternative sentencing, but I don't remember what he did.
