Terraforming Earth

From another thread:

Already have the technology to creat a colony on mars? In a hundred years terreforming projects will probably be seriously considered (ie the use of microorganisms to begin developing a oxygen atmosphere) think long term guys.

Questions: Assuming this is true, if we could terraform Mars, why not Earth? If we could terraform Earth to turn it into a pristine Garden Planet, should we? Would future-Earth be some sacrosanct monlith that shouldn't be f--ked around with because it's the cradle of humanity? (I mean, people already bitch about us changing the environment to the negative. Would changing it to the positve be hypocritical?)

I really don't know the answers to these questions, but I'm at work and bored. :D

Sure, we could do that, probably even should, but we'll need to have spread out a bit to other worlds, 'cause terrforming Earth is going to cause a certain amount of disruption.

*looks around furtively* Are those your boss' footsteps I hear?

It would suck if god was actually a divine teenager playing their version of Civ III, and decided "Fuck it, these nubs are never going to discover FTL travel. New Game, Y."

Then we'll be terraformed, alright.

As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing sacrosanct about the Earth. If we can save humans from death, poverty, starvation or illness, let's do it. The real issue is a pragmatic one - the sheer complexity of the systems we'd be screwing with makes it difficult to be sure that what you're doing won't REALLY mess stuff up.

In the broad sense, Earth has and will continue to be "terraformed" - if not on a singular, global basis, nonetheless with global implications. Look beyond the immediate redundancy of the statement. It is obvious that such planetary engineering will persist for as long as humanity attempts to realize normative ecological visions of its planet - to render Earth more ideally Earth-like.
