NS Fantasy Football version 2.0!

Delator
20-07-2006, 08:52
As training camps open up nationwide, the NFL is getting ready for another exciting season.

On NS, however, we have something else to get excited about...

Fantasy Football! :D

Last years NS league was a lot of fun, and we had an exciting time all season long, so I thought I'd start a thread early and gauge the interest in another NS Fantasy Football league this season.

I don't know if Sdaeriji is still around (I don't see him post much), but if he is not, I'd be happy to take over league managment responsibilities.

So...who's ready for some Fantasy Football?? :)

Count me in. I could go for some Fantasy Football this year. *Tries to avoid signing up for 8 different leagues*

Alright then...that's two.

We will, of course, need a few more.

I'll be making sure this thread stays noticable from now until the season (and Fantasy drafts) start, so keep an eye out for when more details are available.

We'll probably do the League on Yahoo again this year, since it will be familiar to anyone from last year who wants to participate again...and I think it's a good system.

But, we've got over a month before details like our draft and point systems need to be worked out. For now, we just need to know if there is interest, so speak up Fantasy Football fans! :)

I thought the same thing myself last season, but it really doesn't take much...a couple of hours set aside for the draft, and then it's basically just check your roster on Friday and make sure your set for the weekend. Takes like maybe 20 minutes a week unless you get uber-hardcore into it.

But of course, it does take time, and not everyone has it.

Keep us posted! :)

Nothing concrete, except that Live Drafts (if we choose to do one) run until the end of September (after the season has started :p )...

...therefore, there is no rush, as we have the entire month of August to get the league set up.

It is the busiest week of the year at my job right now, and so I will let this thread generate some more interest, and then probably set the league up over the weekend and work it from there.

Given that we are going to be spread over the globe, and that a lot of us have jobs and stuff, trying to schedule a live draft seems like a logistical nightmare.

I think that a list draft would be much easier to arrange.

I know it's childish but the phrase 'tight end' still makes me giggle. I guess it's up there with 'wide reciever'.

How is this league played? Is it like the world cup where you pick players from a list or do they have transfer values of what?

You fill a certain number of positions and you gain points based on their performance in games.

There is a draft.

This means that there is this big list of players (all the players in the NFL) and we take turns picking players from this list (Just like picking footy teams in the playground at school.) Now this can be done two ways. It can be done by all of us being on-line and selecting live (Live draft) - or by us preparing a ranked list of players and these lists being used to select the next available player on our list.

Basic info.

Order of importance
1) Running backs are GODs in fantasy football.
2) Quarterbacks are junior GODS
3) Wide receivers are saints
4) Tight ends are preachers
5) Kickers and defenses are the scum of the earth.

In the standard Yahoo format you have 1 QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, 1TE on your active offense, 1K and 1DEF active and 6 reserves.

It is good to have at least one of each offensive position in reserve. Then you decide whether you want a further RB or whatever or a reserve K.

Keep an eye on the bye weeks. (No game that week for this player or that one.) If both your QBs have byes the same week, then you are going to play without a QB that week! Not good.

EDIT:

As an example here is a tream I drafted earlier: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/137516/7

I am, but after I cracked a vertebra in my neck playing rugby, I swapped to playing American Football. I played for my university for one season, and for a couple of UK clubs. (Now retired due to being decrepitly aged). I like the game so I have played a few fantasy seasons. (I still haven't forgiven Jamal Lewis for last year. )

The game is ruled by statistics. What a player did last year, (or the last three years really), is generally a good predictor for what he will do this year. However Jamal Lewis, who two years ago was one of the top, if not the top running back in the league, crashed and burned in the 2005/6 season.

There are good guides as to who is likely to be good and who is not on the various sites that run the fantasy games.

We debated at length last year about whether to do a live draft or not, and in the end we DID do a live draft through Yahoo.

The other options are...

1. To submit pre-ranked lists of desired players, in which Yahoo will automatically select the highest ranking player on your list that remains when your next pick is up.

The problem with this, and why we ruled it out early in the discussion, is that there is too much of a chance that other peoples picks will result in a skewed roster (example: three QBs and no RBs, or 5 WRs and no defense)

2. To do the draft here on NS...

There are logistical problems to this, but in theory it would work...the only thing necessary will be a STRICT minimum response time between posts, to prevent double posting and arguments between people over who actually drafted a guy (Sdaerji told us last season that such arguments were quite common when he tried the same system the year before)

That, and it will take a LOT longer doing it by forum than by live draft...last year it took less than an hour to do the whole draft for ten people.

...

I myself would be in favor of another live draft...but obviously time-zone issues may make this impossible...

Perhaps a poll?? Public, so those who aren't involved and vote anyways can be weeded out from the participants...

A big league would be better. It would show the real NS champ. And to win, you'd have to be a virtuoso with football knowledge (yay me :D ). Anyway. If it's like some kid who doesn't know what American football is, then you get the satisfaction of crushing him like a paper cup...

One big league. Something different from the standard 12 for a change. So when we read a player's analysis and it says "should only be used in leagues of more than 12 teams" or, "only useful as a backup, or occasional starter in larger leagues" we won't be as dismissive. Maybe the goal line guy in the RBBC situation is worth holding on to, etc...

Sdaeriji said he changed the values for Rushing Yds, Recieving Yds. and Receptions to make Quarterbacks less dominating, but I can't seem to find out what the new values we actually used were.

I changed...
Receptions from .5 to .75
Rec. Yds from 20 yards per point to 15 yards
Rush Yds. from 15 yards per point to 12 yards per point

That seem good to everyone else?

~snip~

So we'll be starting 2 QBs, 3 WR, 2RB, 2TE, a flex(WR or RB), a Kicker, a defense...and have 6 bench spots? That's a total of 18 players...as opposed to the 'standard' 14. That's a big team, especially in a large league.
Vittos Ordination2

Two quarterbacks per team will use up every starting quarterback in the league. It is very likely that teams will end up starting a quarterback that isn't actually starting for their NFL team.

That is what the BN players are for. You have six of these in the set up I gave:

Looks good to me AB...and yeah, Yahoo allows Flex players.

I figured the old setup wouldn't work, not when this year has generated almost twice as much interest as last year.

Nobody commented on the point system, so if there are no other questions, I should be getting the league set up before 7:00 am CST.

I'll make another post with further details then.

The League is up!

However, I need an e-mail address in order to invite anyone. I believe one must also have a Yahoo account in order to access the League.

TG me with an e-mail address, and an invite will be sent ASAP!

---

A couple of things...

1. I set the League for 20 teams...in the hopes that we can keep interest high. Sixteen people have expressed interest, and these people will be given preference for the league spots.

The other four? Well, whoever TG's me first, of course. :)

2. A Live Draft is tentatively scheduled for 2pm CST on Monday, August 21st. I'm fairly sure that won't work for many people, but we can change the draft time before hand, so perhaps that should be the next thing we work out?

When you log in with your nation (where you deal with issues and so forth), click on "World" on the sidebar, then search my nation name (Delator)...scroll to the bottom of my page, and there should be a little space where you can write a private message to me.

I am at GMT -3 hours (one hour ahead of the US Atlantic coast.)

Why do people feel the need to put an s on the end on lego to pluralise it? The plural of lego is lego dumbass.

In the US, the plural in common usage is Legos. We have had an entire thread on this before. And it redefines the nature of the word lame.

Just for this UK English-nazism, I shall now make sure to obliterate your team when we play. :p

It would be a good idea to add a multiple choice public poll to this thread to vote on the draft day and time. (Only you can do it as the OP.)

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Then we'll have rabid soccer fans trying to skew the results so we'd have to draft at 4 in the morning or some such crap. Much better to discuss it on the league's page- no chance of contamination...

That is why it has to be a public poll, We only count the votes of those in the league.

I have tried to get a discussion going on the league page, but most seem to be either ignoring it, or simply saying "the weekend is good for me" type comments - without any specifics (times etc.)

Two times were already proposed- one an early day during the weekend, the other an evening during the week. (converted to my time, that is) I thought everyone was refering to the time slot that worked best for them.

I know, I proposed them. The point is that we need to be much more specific for Delator to be able to set the draft time. Additionally, as things stand now, there is an almost even split between weekend (The proposal was for a more than 12 hour period - so how this is early I don't know) and weekday evening. We need to decide somehow, and soon. If it is left to the last minute it just makes it harder to arrange as some of us will need to shift things around to get a couple of hours free whenever.

True, but your other players can always pick up the slack.

I was kicking myself for starting Bulger over Vick again at QB, then saw that Amani Toomer had scored about 30 some points!
