When did 'Katyusha' become such a buzzword?

I mean seriously. They said 'Katyusha' fourteen times during ONE segment of a report on the current mid-east war. Apparently any rocket is now a 'katyusha', I even heard one reporter on FOX (suprise, suprise  ) talking about a 'handheld katyusha'.
Come ON people. Its really not that hard to tell an RPG (or one of their many varients from other countries) from a Katyusha :P
I wont be suprised when they start calling the US rocket systems 'Katyusha's'.
Sheesh.
Is it REALLY that hard to tell this:

Oh well, cant blame the silly news people, I suppose. I blame the American school system, for not having a weapons recognition class.

This has been my complaint about most reporting of military things. None of the reporters can be arsed to know a rifle from an e-tool.

They do that during playtime/recess.

No, they did up until the 1960s, and then they stopped.

Most reporters I've met are astonishingly ignorant of weaponry, or even non-weapon military equipment nomenclature. Or military strategy and tactics.

It's as though you sent me to report on Paris fashion shows - the stories (to an fan of fashion shows) would sound incredibly stupid.

But even then they only usually teach pistols. You dont find many hand held rocket launchers on the playground, even these days ;)

More like anything related to weapons. There was a recent report that classified an SKS as being "powerful enough to shoot through an engine block" but (get this) it follows bone so you can be shot in the shoulder and it could come out your toe.

So bone is stronger than reinforced steel?

Hah! So naive.

Anyway, why can't you tell the difference between an RPG and a Qassam rocket?

The Katyusha is a very basic rocket design, and there are several basic variants on the same theme. It's a very flexible rocket, and can be built in very crude circumstances.

Anyone who knows a little WWII history would know what a Katyusha is, and its other names (Stalin's Organ, for one).

yes

but Hezbollah does not use "handheld Katyushas" (if they even exsist), they use RPG-7s

Anyway, nothing between Germany and Vietnam exists. Except maybe India and the Middle East, and then only from about 1000 AD-1200AD, and from ~1980 onwards. Between those times, it doesnt exist.

Funny, I learned about Katyushas in the US school system, when I was in high school, and the subject was World War II.

We even learned about the German version, the Nebelwerfer.

I'd imagine the pundit probably meant to say man-portable Katyushas. Most of the Katyushas are set up on a small metal or wood stand, and set off with a car battery, much like a model rocket. The guy's probably just a moron who couldn't get his words right.

I remember a short video from the 1984 conflict, where some Hez were firing three from the back of a truck (they had cobbled together something that would fire only three from a pickup truck.

They were firing up through some high tension power lines overhead. I knew what would happen next.

The first two missed the wires, but number three hit the power lines over head and detonated, blowing the people who were firing the rockets into fist-sized chunks, and stunning the cameraman.

It just goes to show you, that if you video what you're doing, some really stupid accident will happen, or you'll get in trouble some way.

Qassam are the homebuilt version in the Palestinian areas.

Katyushas are the factory-built version everywhere else.

Palestinians usually don't have more than one or two to fire at once.
