Since we've got the best Skynyrd song thread going, and there's been some consideration there of the question, who's your favorite Southern Rock Band?
NOTE: this is for the genre Southern Rock (http://classicrock.about.com/od/history/a/southern_rock.htm), not general bands from the South, so forget REM, Pantera, etc. ;)

I will not forget Pantera!!! Na, JK. I guess from there I'd take AC/DC, but how a band fom Australia gets on a list of American Southern Rock is beyond me.

I don't know how AC/DC is on that list - they sure ain't "a musical style marked by hard rock guitar, boogie rhythms, and lyrics about the cultural and historical heritage of the South."

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best musician to come from the South in a long time. Not too many days go by for me without listening to one of his albums.
Meh, I guess i'm biased against southern rock. :p

Erm. Well, we're southern and stuff.

Geographically yes, genrewise, no.

orly? :p
I don't see where AC/DC fit in with Skynryd myself, but eh. I don't know most of the others listed.

Love Stevie, but he's Texas Blues more than Rock - in my books. But close enough.

Like I said: I don't know how AC/DC is on that list - they sure ain't "a musical style marked by hard rock guitar, boogie rhythms, and lyrics about the cultural and historical heritage of the South." (That's the definition of the genre that the site gives.)

Oh, missed that post. My bad.
Do ZZ Top count as well? I wouldn't have thought so myself. Or is that list just crap?

No worries, mate. ;)

ZZ Top, like SRV, are kind of in that triangle of blues, blues-rock, and southern rock. I'd say they're more blues-rock, but one could call thgem southern rock.

Or is that list just crap?It is, but not because of inconsistency. ;)

Maybe because this is about the best Southern Rock band, not a crap rapper. (he may have done some stuff with the likes of Hank Jr. and that cover of "Luckenbach, Texas" on the Waylon Jennings tribute, but that's just :( )
Why no "Blackfoot"?
Much better question.
Another band who didn't fit into the limited # of poll options

Okay, kids*, if your really haven't even heard of any of thye bands listed, your homework assignment this weekend is to listen to at least one song by one of the bands listed. Expand your limitations....
*I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just that if you really haven't listened to any of those bands, you are almost certainly a child in comparisojn to me...

There's another way to look at this. No matter what kind of music y'all are discussing, it doesn't matter. When it comes to music in Texas, Bob Wills is, and always will be the King.

If I stick to your definition, then it's the Allman Brothers, all the way.

Please. Skynrd? I'm from the South, listened to this dreck and garbage all my life, and I can say that outside of one Satellites album, the only band worth mentioning is .38 Special.
SRV is more Texas Blues/Rock. He falls into the overplayed into oblivion trap, however.

That's funny. 38 Special is almost a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band.
