I wonder what took them so long to do this?

The US Government has decided to wave the normal evacuation fee nor do they have to re-imburse the government for it.

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- The Bush administration is waiving the requirement that Americans have to pay or reimburse the government for being evacuated from Lebanon, aides to two senators said.

The announcement came after stranded Americans, along with politicians and their families back home, expressed anger with the situation.

Maybe this so called 1956 law mandating they pay or reimburse the government will get changed.

If you go to a war area, you have a RIGHT TO GET EVACUATED. Don't we want to encourage international travel.

THIS SO CALLED LAW WAS PASSED BY REPUBLICANS in the dead of night. The RICH can easily be taxed to provide this service.

But not just this, we need education, healthcare, childcare, pensions, food and housing, a minimal amount of recreation and anything else that people want needs to be payed for BY THE RICH, who owe society for being rich.

I think in 1956 the Democrats had control of the Congress. I could be wrong though.

Same … I don’t mind helping pay for people that get nailed like that. While not a complete surprise the viciousness of this kind of broadsided the world.

Some people are idiotic and I can see having some penalties to people taking stupid chances but in this case as far as I know they should be able to be helped no problem

WTF?

Why would you GO into a war area to begin with?

Rich people deserve tax cuts just as much as the poor people do. Get robbed more, get more back.

Noone owes society anything for being rich. You seem to think having money and wealth is a canker and sore, and something that is "baaaaaaaaaaad".

I worked hard, I'm going to spend it however I choose to. Freedom at it's finest.

It is quite obvious since he didn't know that the Democrats were in control in 1956 when this law was passed.

Frankly, this law should be overturned.

Now there you have a point.

And to be honest, I myself got caught offguard that people had to pay to get evacuated out of a hotzone. Its nice to see that the government decided to wave the fees in this case.

Agreed though I can see the government’s point when people make stupid decisions to do things and expect others to pay for their safety net. I don’t know there has to be some way to balance things better

Maybe they should leave it as a stupid fee? If they're going into a known safe zone, Yeah, I could see the point of taking it off. But if they're going into a known hot spot to vacation....triple it.

But like most things there is a good balance of things but I am not sure in this case, I would rather not have some other fallible and expensive governmental body in charge of who pays or not but I don’t know any other way then on a case by case basis of handling these things.
