Civil War Tunes
A lot of great tunes were written during the Civil War era. There were many on the North and South like Dixie, Hymn of the Old Republic (which borrowed the tune from another Union song by the name "John Brown's Body"), the Naval Hymn, and Bonnie Blue FLag. There were many others besides those listed.
Which is your favorite?
Probably "Dixie". Ironically, however, that song was written by a Northerner about a decade before the war to describe the fact that circuses spent their winters performing in the South...I remember reading something to that effect in an issue of America's Civil War a few months ago.
"The Battle Hymn of the Republic." None of the others come close.

Wow. I never would've guessed that. How funny that the South would embrase that song.
I have to say that "Bonnie Blue Flag" Has a great tune, but the lyrics are jsut horrible. "We're fighting for the property we earned by honest toil."

Battle Hymn of the Republican violates the Seperation of Church and State, so you can't pick that one. :(
Sorry, I wish we could allow it but the Constitution blocks it. I realize it might have been used at the time, but the people were stupid then, nowadays it can't be taught in public schools because of the 1st amendment.

Good Old Rebel
I hates the Yankee nation and everything they do,
I hates the Declaration of Independence, too,
I hates the "Glorious Union", 'tis dripping with our blood,
I hates their striped banner, I fought it all I could.
What is not to like?
You can still use the tune of the Battle Hymn as the tune was originally written for the Civil War march "John Brown's Body."

I never heard that one before. The lyrics are bad, but I still say "Bonnie Blue Flag" is worse.

The 1863 version of "Michigan, My Michigan" of course. *PDF WARNING!* (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/hal_mhc_mhm_mich-my-mich-song_53148_7.pdf)
It's by far the best version of my state's unofficial song. The 1903 version was made because the 1863 version was "inappropriate" in peacetime.

I don't buy this act of yours, I haven't for a long time. You are (quite obviously, at least to me) a right-winger faking left-wing politics in order to convey the impression that there are actually people as deluded as you pretend to be, and that the public education system is what makes them think that way.
Go and bother people who will take you seriously; I won't.

I miss living in Michigan, but the state's song should be "Hail to the Victors." I'm at Purdue and I loudly sung it during a basketball game at Mackey Arena. Even at Purdue, I still root for Meechigan.

I liked a lot of the fife tunes from "Gettysburg," the Sid Meier simulation game. Aside from "Dixieland," I don't know the names of them though.
Maybe someone who played (still plays?) that game knows 'em.
In any case, we need an update to Gettysburg that uses all of the glorious new graphics tehnology that the modern computers have come up with. In fact, something like that might actually even convince me to buy a modern computer! :p

It's sad how many of our state's young people have had to move to Chicago. Hopefully, eventually the economic situation will improve so that won't have to happen. Still, Chicago is a great town.

Amen. I have part of that memorized.

Let us die to make men free
Our god goes marching on...

From memory, so there are probably errors:
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He has leased the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword
Our God is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
Our God is marching on.
I have read His fiery gospel writ in burnish'd rows of steel
As ye shall with my (can't remember, started with a c) so with you my grace shall deal
Let the hero born of women crush the serpent with his heel
Our God is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat
Oh, be swift my soul to answer Him, be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
In the land across the lillies Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy let us die to make men free
Our God is marching on.
All of which goes to show just how much I like the song.

Here in Tejas in the DFW Area, sometimes on 94.9 Christian KLTY, maybe maybe maybe on 89.7 Power FM (Christian Rock station, I love it) and often on 88.3 The Word (Christian Preaching station, good to listen to when sad/depressed. Always uplifting).

First, people might think that it's ok for the government to have religion, AND IT'S NOT. Since the Founding it wasn't allowed, how that song go through the cracks is beyond me. Abe Lincoln was probably a fundamentalist.
We need to get God out of the public square. God is oppressive to woman, African_Americans, homosexuals, non-Chrsitians. :( It makes me scared that I won't be able to leave the house if Christianity gets stronger. Look at how things have changed since Goerge Bush became president. For example, I have to obsess over contraception because if a pregnancy happens, I'm not sure abortion will be available.

To be honest, I'm willing to bet a number of people only bowed their heads to be polite. That's the only reason I ever bowed my head during the benedictions when I was active. There's also the ingrained private's instict of "the nail that sticks out gets hammered".
Don't think for a minute that an overwhelming majority of the military is religious. A simple majority like 60% possibly, but not much higher, if at all.

I'm not saying 100% of those recruits were born again Christians, it's that even the dirtiest mouth PFC would bow his head out of respect.

Everyone, religious or not respects the chaplain. He's got one of the harder jobs in the unit, and if the unit's in a combat zone he's the only guy without a weapon. Not my idea of a fun time.
And yes, although I'm not religious I did appreciate the fact that the chaplain cared enough about everyone's wellbeing to pray for us. I'm generally quite cynical about such things, as I'd normally assume he was doing it because it was his job. However, every chaplain I had the good fortune to talk with was an honestly compassionate and caring person, regardless of your religious affiliation. Our chaplain when I was in Iraq was a Catholic, but he was just as welcoming and compassionate to the Protestants in the unit, and even the pair of Muslims we had. A very good man.
edit: And one thing I really liked about our chaplain was that he didn't prosetylize. He would counsel people, but if they weren't Christian he wouldn't push Christianity on them.

Since the Founding it wasn't allowed, how that song got through the cracks is beyond me.
It didnt "slip through the cracks", it was nationally (though, mainly northern:D ) recognized, along with thousands of other quotes, documents, and songs. Just because the founders didnt believe in theocracy doest mean they pretended not to have a religion, or pretended anyone else didnt.
Abe Lincoln was probably a fundamentalist.
Quotes like these make me sorry I never sigged the time you said something like "North Korea is a positive example of what every country could be with a progressive movement"

Best Lyrics: Battle Hymn of The Republic
Best Tune: Bonnie Blue flag -This song pratically doesnt need lyrics when played right, its almost as if the notes themselves express a ressurected hope.
Of special note: Those that enjoyed the civil war PBS series. The famous sad violin(sp?) tune is called "Ashokan Farewell".

Down with the traitors, up with the stars;
While we rally round the flag, boys, rally once again,

We are springing to the call of our brothers gone before,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we'll fill our vacant ranks with a million free men more,

I tend to like the more somber Civil War pieces.
TWO BROTHERS:
Two brothers on their way
One wore blue and one wore grey
Two brothers on their way
One wore blue and one wore grey
One wore blue and one wore grey
As they marched along their way
The fife and drum began to play
All on a beautiful mornin'.
The mood that this simple lyric sets as it describes a tragic separation of families across battle lines never fails to move me.
